I was looking for a Peruvian restaurant in San Antonio and stumbled across this gem. When you see few average or poor reviews because folks are complaining about wait times, then you know it has to be a mom and pop. My family enjoys supporting mom and pop businesses, so we came here to check it out. I have two young children and came here twice. The first time was with a visiting relative and second time was with my husband. Our first experience was great! We got there around 1pm on a Friday. They have a lunch special that we couldnt pass up. Its about 6.99 for a lunch buffet; half off for military and officers. Its partially self-serve, which is different from what we were expecting (the full on buffet). The soups, salad, condiments, and desserts are self-serve. The main course is served by Chef Waldos wife and sometimes the chef himself. The buffet comes with a sweet peach tea, which is addicting. Its not too sweet, just perfect (not as sweet as Chick-fil-A sweet tea). The food has a Caribbean, Cuban, and Peruvian mix. The earlier you get there, the better the options. Once they run out of certain sides or dishes, then you get to choose from whats left (first come, first serve). The chef and his wife are very friendly and do their best to get to know their customers. My relative, kids, and I all enjoyed our first visit. My second visit was due to the fact that my husband had to check out this awesomely priced lunch buffet. We went around 11:30am on a Friday this time. We were one of the first ones there for lunch rush but the last to leave. The restaurant was fully stocked and clean. The chef and his wife were out serving the buffet and servicing customers. This time they had kitchen help, so they each had more time to spend with customers. They made an effort to talk to everyone that visited. Whenever they serve the kids, they make sure the kids get non-spicy food and the best meats. We recommend getting the soups early on, that way the soup has time to cool down. My husband agrees that we have to return to this restaurant to try out the menu items. We cant comment on the menu, dinner, or weekend as we have yet to try anything besides the weekday lunch buffet. As far as cleanliness, it reminds us of a restaurant in a village (a very homey feel). They use dishes that appear to be collected over time; most have wear and tear. The condiment bottles may not be as clean as some folks would like. The drinks are provided in clean glasses for adults and styrofoam cups with lids for the kids. It is a kid-friendly place even though a tad cramped; no diaper-changing station though. If youre in a rush to eat, dont come here...give them at least 30 minutes for them to fully service you. Weve seen folks come and go in 20 minutes, but theyre regulars, they know what they want, and they effectively communicate for their check (e.g. walk up to the register). Our two young kids eat slow at times. So, we observe our surroundings and try to take in the moment whenever they take their sweet time.

Although my husband and I had Puerto Rican and Cuban food before, it was our first time exploring Peruvian cuisine; and what a pleasant new experience! ^_^ Service: Our waitress, who seemed like a gentle and kind soul, was friendly, informative, and prompt. Chef Waldo was professional and personable as he went around the restaurant interacting with customers and ensuring that their needs were met. He also served customers a generous buffet plate of a variety of food. He encouraged customers to eat more, but one plate was more than enough for us. Granted, theres always room for a little dessert. Out of all the restaurants weve been to throughout the world (especially while in the Army), this one is the most generous when it comes to supporting active-duty military. They give 50% off of meals, which was unheard of prior to coming to this place. Its completely understandable that this discount doesnt apply to retired veterans since it would probably put them out of business. Ambiance: This place may be small in size, but its quite cozy and inviting with its dimly lit sections, display of fresh, home-cooked dishes, and decorated walls; but the greatest warmth comes from the genuinely friendly staff. Food and Drink: The grilled chicken was very flavorful and moist, the pork was a bit overcooked (hard on the outside) but still tasty, the fried plantains were perfect in texture and flavor, and the sauce covered rice and beans were delicious. We didnt care for the yuca root, but then again, weve never had it before, and may not be used to it; perhaps its an acquired taste. In addition, we preferred the beef soup over the chicken since it had a rich, yet, refreshing flavor. The desserts were delightful as well, especially the caramel-colored cookies with wavy icing on them(Mmm), and what appeared to be fried tortillas with a sprinkle of what tasted like cinnamon. We were served ice tea with our buffet meal, and it was hands down the best ice tea we ever had (not overly sweet, bitter, or artificial tasting). My husband never liked ice tea until he drank theirs, and we were informed its a combination of a few flavors, but I only recall pineapple. We will not only return to this place, but also help spread the word to those we know.

Good food & atmosphere but I simply asked the waitress/wife how much longer until the food comes out (waited about 20+ mins) & she went on & on about it being made fresh & being patient. That was fine, I just noticed everyone else had their food & had eaten, I just was making sure I wasnt forgotten about. Then, when it was time to pay, I had a Groupon (which was expired) but should still be good according to Groupon. They said they wouldnt honor it. I was OK with that bc it was only for $12.00. What upset me is the owner/cook said he would take it off of my check but only talked to my date in a way that made me feel like what I was saying didnt matter which should have bc I had the Groupon & planned on paying the bill. He kept shushing me & below his breath saying "women... just dont listen ". My date said it might be a cultural thing with the men but I will never go back there due to how I felt leaving- but the food was decent overall.

I have been here a few times, and always walk out very satisfied and full. The restaurant owner is the chef, and he takes great pride in his work. He likes to chat around with his clientele and make sure they are taken care of. If youre there for the $6.99 buffet with tea, all you do is walk up and ask for a plate with everything, and from there, you decide what you liked and either ask for specific things on your next round or just another round of it all. The ambiance can feel a little small and crowded at times, but thats what happens at these hidden gems. The chef and hostess keep their work areas clean and tidy. I definitely recommend trying this place out.
