We used to think the 5th Street Diner was the best diner in the area. Every now and then, if it was late and we wanted something better than fast food, my boyfriend and I traveled twenty minutes outside our area just to go here. Unfortunately, we will no longer be customers because of a recent, weird experience. We went in this past week for dinner and the food was all right, although not as good as usual. As we were finishing our meals, the waitress began cleaning the table behind us and started to chat. She asked us about our career plans for the future. We thought this was just pleasant talk. We told her what our plans are -- physical therapy, and writing. She said something to the effect of, "Okay. But what do you really plan on doing to make money?" Could there be a more rude response than that? We were both taken aback. What followed was a really strange conversation. She said she was going to offer us a way to make large amounts money. She sat down at our table, without asking if this was okay, and began talking about some "energy savings program." Specifically, she told us she was already a member of this program and that one of her family members was making a lot of money from it. We immediately saw where this was going. We then got a 10 minute sales pitch. The more she talked about this program, the more obvious it became that she was describing a pyramid scheme business. She said the name of it was Stream/Ignite and she was surprised we had never heard of it. Whatever this program is, she was attempting to recruit us into it, which we did not find appropriate. Obviously. We were both tired and we wanted to pay the bill and go home, but she held us up to continue talking about it. I got up and went to the bathroom to wash my hands. When I came back, she was standing in the aisle blocking my seat. I sat down next to my boyfriend. She continued to talk about it while blocking the aisle so we couldnt make a move for the checkout counter. Im not sure if she realizes what shes involved in, but evidently she was trying to gain rank or money by recruiting us. This was not professional. If any waitress asks you about your career plans or offers you a way to make more money, dont engage in the conversation. Its not my aim to get this waitress fired. Maybe she thought she was doing us a favor, but she obviously had a personal agenda and personal interests at stake. I feel management should know about this so other customers dont get solicited. Im giving two stars because the food has always been decent, and the restaurant has always been clean. Unfortunately, because of this experience, we will no longer visit.

Its a diner, which is popular around this area, if youre an out-of-towner, dont expect linen napkins and staff to call you sir and madam. Its a very laid back atmosphere, so if thats what youre looking for with pretty good food (for a diner.) Food is not waist-friendly, but thats the norm for diner food. The food most of the time is pretty good, Ive had a variety through the years. Most of the waitresses are friendly and, again, laid back, like joking with you and leaning against the wall to take your order. Im not saying that in a bad way...its the atmosphere. If you want someone in a suit calling you sir, dont come here...lol You have your occasional grumpy waitress or host/hostess, but generally, everyones pretty cool and friendly. Restaurant and bathrooms are clean. Plenty of parking. Foods good no matter what time you go. Definitely get a rowdy crowd later in the night/early am like when the bars close. I recommend their burgers (they used to be on kaiser rolls which I thought was better, but still good), creamed chipped beef (or SOS)....dont know what chipped beef or SOS is? LOL Sh** on a Shingle...welcome to Berks county! Its small pieces of smoked or dried beef in a white thick gravy type sauce over toast or home fries. (Think similar to biscuits and gravy in the south.) This is the best place for it! I get it all the time!

Im not normally impressed with diner food. Its always just been a way to fill that hunger pang. But the food my fiance and I just had at 5th Street Diner was way beyond any diner food Ive ever had. My fiance had tuna melt and fries. I had a cheeseburger and fries. And the fries were probably the best fries Ive had in forever. Its really hard to get french fries just right, but the cook tonight found a way to do it. In a word, they were perfect. And the rest of the meal was just as good. The waitress was excellent. She was prompt, and not pushy. And she didnt ruin my coffee right after I got it just right. She was great. So whoever was cooking, and for the outstanding waitress on May 17, at 1:00 in the morning, my fiance and I both say thank you very much, and jobs very well done.

Not to mention they raised their prices..again. 7.50 for 2 eggs homefries and bacon after breakfast. Yikes.

I love this dinner. Especially for the comfort food. They are open 24/7 with great dinner specials and excellent breakfasts at any time of the day. I frequently order food to go at all hours due to my busy schedule

My friends and I basically live in this diner and I normally hate diners so that should say enough. The menu is huge and the food is really good. Great service as well.
