We visited the Black Rabbit recently after a day exploring the waterfalls along the Columbia Gorge. The Black Rabbit is more upscale than the usual hamburgers and fish & chips available at most McMenamin’s… But I guess it’s okay to be dressed outdoorsy since it is a vacation destination. My husband ordered the Wild Boar and the soup of the day, which he enjoyed… I ordered the New York Steak with marsala mushroom sauce (medium rare), fingerling potatoes and braised greens… The steak was closer to medium or medium well and VERY gristly (although the marsala mushroom sauce was tasty)… The braised greens were so salty they were inedible. - Our server was very courteous when I brought these problems to his attention and offered to bring me a new dinner… However, in the time it would take to make me a new dinner my husband would either finish his and we would each end up eating alone, or he would wait for me and eat his dinner cold. In the end I did the best I could with the gristly steak and the server brought me a new serving of greens… The hostess that greeted us when we arrived was extremely friendly and overall the service was good… Except when we ordered a desert to share and they forget to bring us any utensils. I requested two spoons, the waitress gave me a funny look and returned with only one very dirty spoon. For the price we paid I would have to say it was a disappointing experience… We probably won’t be returning…

This is one of my favorite places in the Northwest. So many different little niches and bars and restaurants and wineries and theaters and distilleries and golf holes and music venues and spas and gift shops to explore, all in one place! Awesome place to see a concert! Modest Mouse, Stevie Wonder, Billy Idol, Steve Miller...more than I can remember. There are some imperfections in this paradise occassionally - Power Station Pub can get very crowded & slow, theater is muggy in summer, pizza is inconsistent, rooms are no frills & small, golf course is a short & confusing pitch and putt. But none of that will phase you on a warm summer afternoon, drinking Hammerhead or IPA with the awesome fish and chips, or chilling on the loading dock eating BBQ and watching free music. If youre a Deadhead you gotta check out Jerrys Icehouse Pub, and if youre a locavore foodie spring for the fancy Black Rabbit Restaurant. Edgefield is more like a hippie resort - too much to see in even a couple days. Gotta love the excellent wines and original artwork everywhere. Pretty sure the place is haunted by several good natured ghosts, but that just adds to the intrigue. If youre going on a busy day or weekend, bring a chill attitude, no rush, wander, enjoy!

The grounds rock, the art is fantastic, the beers are up to standards with other mediocre micro-breweries... however: What does it take to get a HAPPY, speedy wait person or good food at this place?? This is somewhere you take your out-of-town guests because it is just SOoo different. But that is about it. Or you really do not know where else to go that day/night and it is big, well known, and crowded, so you go there. If you want quality food, however, you have barked up the wrong tree, my friend. To note: how can one company single-handedly mess up french-fries SO completely? Honestly? Who in world gave the green light to these 3 inch greasy, burnt tasting things? It absolutely baffles my mind to think they have been serving the SAME bad fries year after year... after year... after year. Has anyone in management ever tasted these?! Finally... super snooty, slow, "you will get it when you get it" employees await you around every corner. It is that hipster-chic garbage that the rest of the world does not find so quaint. I honestly do not care how "funky" your vintage t-shirt is; a genuine smile, quick service, and a thank you go a lot farther in my circles.

Went to the Dylan concert last night, and I must admit, this venue is sorely lacking. We arrived early, but not early enough. It was a looong hike through a hilly, grassy field and gravel trail to finally get to the actual venue, only to find it very crowded, and few open grass spaces left. Having to use the rest room, only to find a row of honey buckets with foot-pump operated hand wash stations. This does not enhance the experience in a positive way. The music was great, however, and it was a pleasant time. Once we left, there were no ushers or signs to direct the way out, so another long hike up the gravel trail, which is now dark and unlit. We passed a woman carrying her infant, and hoped she did not trip. There were plenty of "alcohol enhanced" revelers, and this trail is a not a good mix. I seriously doubt I will go back to this place to see live music, unless they add restrooms at a minimum. It is called McMenamins, but it might as well be in the middle of a cow field for the amenities provided. (Anyone who was there patronizing McMenamins other operations before the show had to go to the back of the line to get in.)

If you plan on doing happy hour at edgefield, be ready for some very slow service. Everytime I have ordered food, they always forget the order. I thought the first time might have been a simple mistake, but four times in a row? Give me a break; I waited 45 to 60 minutes and had to keep asking for my food on average of 2 to 3 times to the bartenders before I finally got my food. These people that work there must smoke out before they come to work. Im totally serious. They also have a lousy menu and outragous prices for the not so good food. There are some fun things to do at some of there places but the price for beer and food is totally not worth the money! For instance, they want $8 bucks fror a bottle of seasonal ale. Like these people dont make enough money on all the high priced good and beer. And they brew it themselves right there, they have no delivery or any people to pay to sell the product, yet charge more than store prices, whats up with that? But dont get me wrong, you might find a good deal if your lucky. Have fun and take alot of money with you and have patients on getting your food at a reasonable time.

We took the tour around the winery and the grounds. It is very cool and interesting. I have been going to this place every time I visit Portland, and this time I couldnt believe the freak show. It seems as all the fruitcakes, along with the clown posse has found out about this place. They were all in the bar and Power House restaurant. If you want an amazing dinner stay in the Black Rabbit. The food is outstanding and the prices keep out the trash. I cant say enough about the Duck..the Lamb and the service.. I love a great Merlot and it is fantastic. I sampled some of their other wines and they are also as good. There is a nice Hotel and Spa but I have never stayed, we have a place right down the road.

I visited this place numerous times, last for one of my friend’s birthday party and the retro ambiance, the isolation from the city, the hot pool, the summer concerts make this place unique. Unfortunately the service consistently is unacceptable: long waiting for service, indifferent personal with poor communications skills (after waiting for 15 minutes for a waitress, and another 20 to get what we ordered, we were informed that the kitchen for the patio restaurant just closed and we need to go inside to order anything else at the bar – it was around 9 PM), pricey items including the drinks and below average food. A shame since this place has great potential.
