More like 3.5 stars, but rounding up since I keep unexpectedly finding myself here. The space is large, with an exposed, high ceiling and long tables in a beer hall inspired setup, while the walls border on kitschy with a mix of pictures of dogs and bulletin boards full of pictures of folks with Lucky Lab shirts all around the world. So why do I like the place? * the space - whether its sitting out back on the large patio (surrounded by folks with their dogs), inside with a large group for a MeetUp, or just tucked away solo in the corner with my laptop, theres plenty of choices, and the large space makes it very adaptable. Its not unusual to walk in and see people running D&D campaigns, playing chess/Go/Scrabble/etc, * wide beer selection - while not my favorite Portland brews, I dont think Ive had a "bad" beer here. Theyve always got something on the cask, as well as a nitro pressurized brew as well. No "great" beers in my opinion, but plenty of very serviceable brews. * "bento" plates - For $7, you get a big plate of white or brown rice topped with veggies and a choice of sauce (peanut, spicy peanut, or a sweet chili), and you can get chicken and tempeh versions too. Nothing fancy here, no subtleties, just a filling plate of rice and some toppings. * sandwiches - okay, Ill admit, Ive never ordered a sandwich here, but Im always tempted (though the lure of the bento plates, which are a few bucks cheaper, tend to lure me in) I find this Lucky Lab location frequently being a coffee shop alternative for me when Im looking to get a little work done on my laptop. Its a 10 minute walk from home and while there are also a number of coffee shops in the area, it often wins since its open late and has beer.

A decently sized sandwich and a pint was $14. They were both good but I have had bigger and better for less. They serve Stumptown beer but not their coffee. 4-5 servers behind the cash registers not delivering food and only helping 1 person at a time. Outside was nice and spread out, the dogs were adorable and mostly well behaved (2 were very unsocial with the other dogs but were taken away after a minor tussle). Over the course of the evening about a dozen smokers stood just on the other side of the waist high wall in front of the "25 feet away" signs completely defeating the point of getting up at all. Inside was much, much better, we wanted to rent the private room for about 4 hours and with only 8 people we couldnt justify the price, $100, so it remained empty the whole evening. The dart boards were in a very weird location with a table of people too close to allow us to stand the normal distance away from the boards. My favorite part of the night was approximately 5 completely random people walking past our table and grabbing food off our plates with their bare hands, not Lucky Labs fault at all thats just what the locals are like, but the servers didnt care when I mentioned it to them. If I go back (only for events, not for myself) Im going to sit inside away from high foot-traffic areas.

First, to clarify Oregon law: If a place sells food, you cant bring your pet inside. Its not the restaurants fault. Stop giving bad reviews when a restaurant doesnt want to incur fines by breaking the law. Ive been to two Lucky Lab locations, this one and Slabtown. I prefer this location simply because they dont try to make pizza here. The pizza at the other location is terrible. This location has a smaller menu consisting of sandwiches, bento and salads. Their reuben is pretty good. I do wish they had more bar food on the menu. Im giving it five stars for two reasons: heated dog patio and lots of space. Its hard to find comfortable places I can take my dog to during the late fall and winter. One of the workers noticed my dog outside while I was ordering and brought a her cookie (with my permission), so thats a star all on its own. Good beer, though they should step up rotation. The menu is almost identical to what it was three months ago. Oh, and I love that the picnic tables have a spot where you can clip your dog leash. Very handy when you have to run inside to order.

Disgusting! Im not sure how anyone would ever step foot beck in this place after one visit. We had hoped to leave with some t-shirts or other Lab swag but we were so disappointed that we left completely disgusted. When we walked to the bar we were already skeptical as it didnt quite smell like other breweries we visited on our trip. When I asked the bartender a question about their beers I received a rude condescending response which was totally unexpected and unnecessary. If we hadnt gone out of our way to get here we would have walked out. We made the journey so we reluctantly decided to stay and try their beers. The place smelled so bad we opted to sit outside which wasnt much cleaner. The beers couldnt have tasted anything other than bitter after our greeting and perception of the place. We ended our brief visit with a stop in the restroom which was just as filthy as the rest of the place. Theres way too many good breweries in and around Portland to waste your time and money to stop here.

We are big beer enthusiasts, who have lived and visited many of the European breweries. Just moved to Portland and were super excited to come to lucky lab brew pub, however the experience was dismal. We were greeted by Putty, who has no enthusiasm nor knowledge of beers, and when we ordered a pitcher and asked to sample two different kinds before ordering he acted "put out". I wanted to say "look man, you work at an awesome brewery, and service beer to people, how are you not be excited or kind to your patrons?" Of course we didn't say that, but knowing that it's super hard to get a job here, why would you employ a jerk who makes people want to leave and not want to come back. It's no wonder that there wasnt anyone there a 10pm on a Friday night - and that other breweries around were packed! Not going back to this location. That's for sure.

10 years ago Lucky Lab would have gotten 5 stars, easy. Back then, it really was dog friendly (they could come inside), & the food was fresh & delicious (especially their hummus plate). Recently, not so much. Dogs are no longer allowed inside (this is not their fault, but it should be clarified), there is an outdoor, covered area with massive heaters (so we were plenty warm) that did welcome dogs but we had to go in to order so if one is solo with their dog, what then? Ok fine, so a dog cant come in, but the food was a major let down. The hummus was bland & the accompanying pita, very stale. The sandwiches we ordered tasted like pre-packaged minit mart sandwiches. I will go back again (without a dog, now that I know), & try again, as I really want to give a better review because Ive always been a fan.

What would be a great brewery in most cities is unfortunately only average and somewhat forgettable in Portland. The extreme dog friendliness of it Touched home with this dog lover, but most of the patrons were actually not super friendly and didnt have great dog manners. The ambiance is kind of roadside bar in the grit factor and like some of the other reviewers, something about the one beer was off like a bad line or old keg. The summer ale was excellent though. As a non IPA lover, the menu was fairly restricted, like most breweries in Portland it seems, but the ones with sub 50 IBU were also quite good. Id come back for a dog friendly place to grab drinks, but probably not for the beer alone.
