As a frequent visitor to Hatteras Island on long weekend trips, I always enjoy at least one dinner out on each trip. This past memorial day weekend I stopped by Ketch 55 while walking to another popular restaurant down the street. Honestly, I wish we had kept walking.... - The hostess told us the wait would be a short 20 minutes. It wound up being nearly 40 with no apology or explanation. They did not even offer drink menus to those waiting. - After we were seated, it became obvious that the restaurant was very LOUD. I mean, really LOUD and it wasnt all that crowded (since we were not seated until nearly closing). for a bar, loud is acceptable - but for a restaurant this was absurd. - It immediately became obvious that the waitstaff, though friendly, were grossly inefficient and poorly trained. I watched out drinks sit on the bar for nearly 20 minutes while our waiter dealt with each task one-by-one. - The food was good, fresh and perfectly prepared and presented - but it took nearly 50 minutes for two orders. There was no apology nor explanation. - As a North Carolina native, I was quite shocked by two misspellings on the drink menu. "Asheville" is not spelled "Ashville" and "Winston-Salem" is not spelled "Wiston Salem" With a great menu and located in an excellent location, Ketch 55 would be a wonderful restaurant with improved management, better trained staff, and a more efficient kitchen.

Nothing to like about this place. Place is very loud, service was horrible and the food was even worse. We were sat at 7 pm after waiting an hour, no biggie, we figured the long wait would be worth it. The server told us all about the special and took our drink orders. We didnt get our drinks for twenty minutes, then when we finally got to place our food orders the server told us they were out of salmon as well as the special. some of us settled on steak and some of us got the "3 from the sea" seafood platter. After 40 minutes the food finally arrived. The steaks were not cooked to the right Temps and the seafood platters looked like they were sitting Under heat lamps for half an hour. The shrimp and scallops were horrible. Dried out, rubbery, WAY overcooked and they were all stuck together and swimming in a pool of grease. These people can not cook seafood. For an average cost of $25 a plate this place was highway robbery. DO NOT GO HERE. Its absolutely terrible. 4 hours of my vacation I wont get back.

They dont take reservations, so we told the hostess we would wait at the bar until a table opened, which she said would be about 15 minutes. After 45 minutes, we asked her what was up, and she told us she forgot we were there and we would have to wait another 30 minutes since she gave our table away. We finally got seated, and the waitress took our orders. After another hour, we asked the manager where our food was. He informed us that he had "a kitchen problem", and got snappy and pushed my husband back toward our table, saying it would be ready in awhile. We then immediately left, and never ate. The restaurant was not crowded, but the hostess, waitress, manager, and bartender all acted like they were upset and doing us a favor by being there. We will never set foot in there again.

This used to be our favorite place on the Banks and Id given it five stars. Sadly it has gone from exceptional to ordinary. They have a new chef who worked under the previous guy but doesnt have his creativity or skill. He produces adequate food, some of which echoes the old menu. But its not the same. The fried Calamari with Jalapenos used to be tender and nicely spiced. Now its like crewing on a rubber band and the pieces are clumped together. My wife liked her entree, but I found it way too fishy tasting. The shrimp and grits were a disappointment: frozen shrimp, way too much sausage and an over spiced, runny sauce. The grit cake was crunchy rather than tender. Overall, disappointing. Guess well have to find another place to take guests.

Always a pleasure to spend my money here. I never look at menu with the knowledge that the special will be a treat straight out of the Avon harbor. Outdoor seating!? Please, the flies on the Island are reason enough not to fret over it and the establishment, doors, ABC permit and so on are not compliant to seating outside regardless. Give me a break on using profanity on a public forum to discredit them not seating outdoors. It is naivety to think drinks and meal prices will not be inflated in a tourist area in peak season. Go to SubWay if you seek a discount. The bartender Rob, has been a consistent mainstay and his patience is as resilient as our server that night Bridget. Coming Back Again!

My wife and I really enjoyed dining at Ketch 55. Our waiter was excellent and recommended interesting options on the menu. The menu itself reflected the chefs desire to use fresh and creative ingredients in all of his dishes. I had the shrimp and grits, which came highly recommended by our waiter and others in the restaurant. It was delicious and our overall dining experience was terrific. I would recommend it if you are looking for a slightly upscale option with exceptional fresh menu choices. Expect to spend $20-25 per person for entrees.

Asked to be seated outside where the OBVIOUS tables and umbrellas were. We were told, "No, sorry, no outdoor seating." What?! Were at the damn ocean. Being inside is not something we desire! We specifically chose this restaurant for its OUTDOOR seating. We bought extremely overpriced drinks that tasted terrible (ginger mule & Mama Colleen). Decided at that point we werent staying. The menu prices for dinner meals were ridiculous anyway. Do you really think youre a 5 star restaurant in Avon? Whatever! Dont waste your time!

B.A.D. So disappointed, did not order dinner after the cocktails & appetizers arrived. Lemon Drop Martini was just that, a drop, the glass arrived an inch short from the top. The margarita was watered down. The chicken wings were fried w no sauce or rub seasoning and were flavorless. The flash fried calamari were pale rubber bands - also flavorless. The waitress did not even ask how it was....did she already know it was awful? Now we are down the road at Pangea Tavern enjoying great drinks, food and service.

Greeted warmly the second you walk through the door. We had breakfast, the food was delicious and the Bloody Mary was the best Ive had. My niece raved about her donut, still warm and very chocolatey! My family went back for more donuts and Im now obsessed with the key-lime pie flavored one. Go to Ketch 55 Seafood Grill, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!

Stopped in to pick up a menu, no prices. Called to get prices was told the updated menu was online. Went online, no prices. Called again to get prices, was told that was an old menu and was hung up on. Never got the updated menu, poor customer service. Ended up going to Oceana Bistro. Great food, great prices, great service and environment.
