We had to wait forty five minutes for a bagel. It was the busiest time of day and they only had one person making the food. She was making all of the specialty sandwiches first and leaving all the bagels and stuff for last, even though that should have been the fastest. To add insult to injury, the bagels had the consistency of rubber and were almost inedible. They were incredibly disorganized, having you pick up your coffee at one side of the restaurant and the food on the other side, but if you ask about your bagel on the coffee side they talk to you like youre stupid. A couple of the people working were very rude. Another customer asked about their food and the guy working was like, youll just have to wait but itll be the best whatever youve ever had. The only saving grace is that the coffee was pretty good and the girl working the grill was very apologetic, even though she was getting most of the pressure while the rest of her coworkers were doing who knows what.

Was worried when my husband muttered "Oh no, THIS place?" as we walked up. I really like their baked goods but will NOT go back to their store - Ill get them via Greenlife or somewhere else they deliver to in the future. After a nearly 10 minute wait (despite there being no line) for a pre-made loaf of bread, bagel with cream cheese, croissant, and bottled drinks, we walked back up to ask where the croissant was. They had sold all five from the case during our wait, to people who came in AFTER us. They did not offer a refund, instead asking what else we wanted, which was nothing since they were out of bagels and were unwilling to offer something that cost MORE than the original order for our trouble. As they just stared at us blankly we ended up accepting a plain biscuit so we could finally leave. It was terrible, cold, and stale. We also tipped prior to receiving our food - wish I could take it back.

The breads and pastries at City Bakery are among the best Ive had. Whoever is doing the baking is a genius. The counter service, on the other hand, is woeful. I visit City Bakery almost every day. Amazingly, my order is screwed up 4 out of 5 visits. The errors range from over-charging to botching the order. These are simple orders (e.g., coffee and a roll). How many ways can this order be messed it up? But they do mess it up, almost daily! A big reason for the problem is the owner. The owner doesnt appear to be actively involved in the front of the house, which is too bad. Which is why the staff is untrained, inexperienced, and lets face it, doesnt care all that much. Id easily rate the food 5 stars, but the horrible service knocks off at least 3 stars.

I cant comment on the food the bakery provides, but I can say that the cakes made by Sarah at City Bakery are out of this world beautiful and tasty! We had her make our Grooms Cake that was designed with a golf theme for my husband and it was GORGEOUS! All the guests raved about how beautiful the cake was. To top it off, when we took our first bite, we were all amazed and how good it was! Some people even asked for second slices! Next was our wedding cake! Sarah was great to work with and the cake was PERFECT! It was everything we talked about and it also so yummy! All the wedding guests complimented the design and the taste of the cake. We are so happy we went with Sarah and City Bakery...FABULOUS work and we would recommend them to anyone!!!!

In search of a wedding cake, and hearing about the success of this bakery, we called to schedule an appointment with the pastry chef. She is apparently based at the Biltmore Ave location, so we placed a call and were immediately screened by Scott. He took a name and number and a return call was never received. A week later we call back and were again screened by Scott. He explained that the pastry chef has 1 office day, which he refused to disclose, and she will not speak directly with any potential client. She returns calls at his/her own descretion. What a joke. We will look elsewhere for that special touch; yall are not the only game in town.

I had lunch up the street at an over rated taco shop and decided to grab a few pastries to tide any hunger pains over during my 3 hour ride back home to Lexington. And I also needed to grab a few treats for the wife.. It was going on 4pm so that might be the reason that there was not a whole lot of choices,I ended up ordering a to go box with 4 different cupcakes,a slice of raspberry pie,a nutella turnover and I already forgot the other items that filled out the box. A little pricey in my opinion but the items were all fresh and tasty and the cupcakes/nutella turnover put a smile on the wifes face so stopping at City Bakery was a win-win...

Been awhile since I was last here, I love the atmosphere, the food, and I used to not like the blank stare service, the charge for every refill of the already expensive coffee, and the lack of Wi fi they proudly would say no to. But The changes are awesome! Greeted today with a hello, friendly smile and small conversation, then same at register!! I was shocked at the change, then I went to pay for more coffee and you get one refill, and they have WiFi!! Thankyou this customer feels welcomed and it will not be as long before my next visit! See you soon!

I really have nothing bad or great to say about this place. The food isnt terrible, the food wasnt upstanding. I grabbed a bite to eat on the way to sight see. It was food. I thought it was over priced, but its downtown Asheville and apparently popular. I really cannot see why its that popular, but I got a breakfast sandwich and it was just... a sandwich. Nothing more to say. Atmosphere wasnt overly friendly and inviting nor hostile. It was very lukewarm, the whole experience. I didnt mind it, but I would probably not go back.

Service was not fast, but they are busy getting things for people. The sandwiches are terrific. My wife says the coffee is stellar. ( I dont drink coffee) I eat chocolate croissant every place I go that has them. This place has the best I have ever had, & that is going up against at least 30 other bakeries throughout the US. A place to be enjoyed for sure, best for a lazy morning/afternoon. Dog friendly outside as well as you can see from Luna in my photo.

Do yourself a favor and get the farmhouse breakfast sandwich. It is AMAZING and HUGE! Could be enough for two ppl to share depending on your appetite. Got that and some coffee for under $10 not too shabby. I saw former reviews about attitude and ran into one person this morning who completely ignored me as I loudly asked her for the wifi password. Whatever. The food is worth it.

I dont know what everone else is talking about (the negativity). I have been here about 4 times for a quick breakfest and each time the staff has been polite, professional, and quick. The place is clean, at least by Asheville standards, and has a great vibe. I will continue to come back here. If you are looking for a quick breakfest then check this place out.
