Silver Moon really looks great, and I always regretted rushing past in a hurry without trying out their foods. However, Ive now gone there a couple of times, and both times the pastries were dry and nearly flavorless. Perhaps their breads are better. In addition, the service is bad and the people unfriendly. The second time I went, I sat outside to eat my dry piece of Styrofoam in the sunshine, and one of the cashiers came out and told me that seats were for food service only. I dont know if this was meant as an admission that their pastries do not rise to the level of food or if he meant that what they do at the counter does not rise to the level of service, but he would be right on either point, and I do not intend to go back.

Apparently, quality control is spotty and fairness to customers is not a serious value. I bought an egg shaped cake for Easter dessert that was described to me as a strawberry short cake with real cream within the decorated icing. At $37 it was a bit pricey, but from what I heard of the Silver Moon the cake would be worth it. Needless to say, my guests were dismayed and I was embarrassed to find that beneath the icing there was only cake and a few stray bits of strawberry. When I asked for a partial store credit and complained to the manager that this was not the strawberry short cake described to me and in no way worth $37, he simply and firmly stated that it was store policy not to refund or give credit. Beware.

One of the first places I ate at when I moved to New York. I really love the California Bun, which is essentially a giant cinnamon bun. Yum. Silver Moon is a great little neighborhood bakery. You can smell the bread and goodies baking from the street, and when the weather is warm, they put out tables to enjoy their fare in the sunlight. The food is great, and so is the service! If youre a soda drinker like me, they havent had Diet Coke a few times that Ive been there, but you can easily go down the street and grab a soda somewhere else.

Great bread, but SLOW service. I go every week to get bread and love their offerings, But the staff is SLOW and does not understand the need to pay attention to the customers on line and to fill their order in a timely manner. They are more interested in socializing among the other workers or taking a break. As a result there is ALWAYS a line out the door. Management should train the staff better. Dont go if you are in a hurry.

Really good neighborhood bakery, Im european and I grew up on french bread and pastries and Silver Moon is the only place I go when I want decent bread or something sweet in the weekend. Havent tried anything I did not like until now, from sourdough bread to brioche or cranberry scones, they are just great on everything and would really deserve to get into the top 10 of nyc bakeries...

I always pick up an almond croissant from Silver Moon whenever I visit the Supermud pottery studio. The almond croissants are as good as, or better than Bouchon in France. Flaky yet moist, loaded with almond paste inside, topped with tons of toasted almonds outside, and dusted with just the right amount of powder sugar. So lucky to have such a bakery in NYC!

Reevaluating// 1. Great bakery! But the people working here are not so frendly :( Maybe because there are enough customers even though they dont try to be friendly. Reevaluation// 2. Their staffs got nicer and they still have really good bread and pastries. Its good to see the staffs working so hard all day! Certainly recommendable.

Quite pricey. I go in for the bread and they are not worth the money. The rye, whole grain and pullman breads are somewhat tasteless, albeit with good texture. The service could be gloomy and lackadaisical depending on the cashier. Overall, this bakery is not worth the high price, especially when it comes to bread.

Croissants that can please a French-trained palette, flaky, rich and yet light; plus a full line of fine pastries and bread. A small sidewalk cafe plays a supporting role; the staff are New-York-City efficient – dont waste their time and they wont waste yours – and handle long weekend-morning lines with zest.

Ive always had a wonderful experience going here. The pastries and sandwiches are really great and they offer outdoor table service in the warmer weather. On the weekends it can get a little crowded, but its well worth the wait. Id consider going here every day if it was a little closer to my apartment.

Was told by a friend that I HAD to try this bakery. Wish Id gone before the end of my trip...raspberry tart is the best Ive had outside of Paris, and the Gruyere puffs were yummy. I couldnt decide, Im glad I dont live here, youd have to roll me out of the bakery!

Ive yet to try anything other than the chocolate croissants because they are too tasty to pass up. One day Ill take home one of the loaves of bread or the other tempting-looking desserts. It always smells incredible inside and the coffee is pretty good.

Wonderful bakery. Individual size pastries all excellent, but the piece de resistance is the bread. Silver Moon baguettes are simply the best bread I have ever eaten anywhere. Nothing here is cheap, but all well worth it.

Wonderful local bakery with best baguettes in the area (prob all uptown nyc) and a lot of sweet baked goods too.. Too bad they dont have a way to seat people in the winter, because they only have outdoor tables

Cute little bakery, great croissants. Would avoid iced lattes though--have had it twice now and its a cup of milk over ice with splash of espresso. Better off going to plowshares for coffee across the street.

Tried the Chocolate/raspberry Brioche today. Was ok. Not the best. Also purchased an Apricot brioche. That was too sweet. The Apricots compote was disappointedly sweet. Not a recommended place.

Great selection of breads. Pastries have just the right amount of sweetness in comparison to most bakeries that over-sweeten things. The eclairs and biscotti are a must-try. Friendly service to boot!

Best baguettes in the neighborhood - they have the perfect crisp crust and super soft inside - and super friendly and efficient staff. New this summer, freshly made, all natural ice cream!

A great neighborhood bakery with excellent baguette and other breads. Desserts are quite good too. The service can be harried, but I think only because they are so popular and busy.

The deserts here are decent but the service is really slow and rude. Im sorry but you cannot expect people to come back if you have crappy service, and we are not coming back.

Fantastic neighborhood bakery. Fresh breads, baguettes, challahs, and breakfast pastries. The service was a little grumpy in the past but has been friendlier as of 6/2012.
