Smokey is right... I wish they would ring that bell that they ring at last call every half hour so I could find my way back up to the bar. Maybe a fog horn or a lighthouse on top of the bartenders head. Yes the beers are great I love that they have Green King on tap but I feel rushed to finish my great beer just so I can breath into the empty glass like I would a bubble if I was trapped under water. everyone wants a cigarette when they have had a few drinks but I dont want to feel like I just smoked a pack before my first drink. The staff is professional but still give you the feeling that you have to prove yourself to them in some way. I guess its a popular enough place to warrant that. Am I hard enough, am I rough enough, am I rich enough... until you know or if you dont want to be no beast of burden OR you just dont want to have your lungs preserved in ash like the people of Pompeii you might want to rough it at a Portsmouth yuppie wine bar.

Took a day trip to Portsmouth on 3/23 with the intention of going to The Coat of Arms. Arrived at CoA about 1:30. Had a couple beers. Cask beer was awesome as was Alexis. She was very friendly, and knowledgeable about the products and history of the bar. Came back about 4:30 for dinner. Beer was great, food was awesome (had the steak and kidney pie). Unfortunately the new bartender (Traya?)... not so much. Seemed to be bothered by us and a bit rude. There were 4 of us, when we ordered our drinks, I started to order my food. She stopped me in mid sentence and very rudely informed me that she will get our drink orders first and then we can order food. Perhaps Traya is in the wrong profession. She did "warm up a little at the end, but by then had a bad impression. Overall, very good though. Loved the pie, and always enjoy the quality beers on tap.

I organized a pub crawl for Friends and Family while home and decided to add this to the stop. Upon entering, the manager on duty treated us as we were a disturbance to his bar and asked us to move away from the front. This was when only 3 of our 25 were actually in the place. After getting a few drinks, a glass fell on the floor and the same unruly manager came to clean it up. We had 4 to 5 people in the group apologize, and while my girlfriend went to take a photo of the mishap on our pub crawl, the manager proceeded to tell her she was out of line and called her a b*tch. Needless to say we were thrown out for bringing to his attention that this was not the way to talk to ladies. In speaking with locals, this guy has earned the reputation as being a complete jerk to all patrons. Quality spot for people looking to have a horrible experience!

This a hidden gem where the locals go. All food is prepared on premises and locally sourced. The Three Cheese Macaroni, Chicken Pot Pie, Chicken Curry, Fish and Chips, and Shepherds Pie are among my favorites. Beers on tap includes several favorites from the UK and elsewhere (Wells Bombardier, Fullers London Pride, Twisted Thistle, Old Speckled Hen, Old Thumper, Guinness from Ireland, Weihenstephaner from Bavaria, as well as guest beers (cask-conditioned ales) from such local breweries as Moat Mountain. And theres hard cider, too. Theres usually soccer on the TV (this is a British pub, after all) and snooker and darts available plus table quizzes (trivia) on Sunday nights. The staff is friendly, attentive, and courteous.

Drinks are excellent, food is meh, security is poor. After coming here regularly as part of a community meet-up, today an employee came over to my table after I had ordered and informed me that the restaurant has a "no open-carry policy". Strange. Ive never been told this before, and Ive open carried every time. I asked if this policy was listed anywhere so I could know before walking in. He said its not posted and that Im "supposed to assume." He asked me to leave and return without my self-defense tool. Given recent events, disarming me makes me feel unsafe. I wont be returning until management makes it clear to their employees that open carry is safe, legal, and good for security.

Randomly took 18 people here one night (got in early so we had space) and the guy managing and our waitress set us up a cool multi-section area for everyone to hang out. They had some great menu choices and the beer selection was solid. Tried the veggie shepherds pie (with lentils and a bit of curry), the guest barley wine (potent and tasty) and kicked it all off with CURRY ONION RINGS which were by far the best damn bar food Ive had. We had a blast and stayed pretty late. Our waitress was helpful and friendly and got a kick out of our stupid jokes. A great time was had by all.

Great place! Good food and atmosphere. During the winter they have hot mulled cider that you can add liquor to if you so choose and a wood stove with glass on all sides. Dart boards adorn one wall and a snooker table is available for use. There is a good selection of beer and spirits. The menu offers traditional English favorites. This place is a little hole in the wall (literally the door to the place is in a hole in the side of the building. Go up the staircase and check out the mural filled with British pop culture). This place is sure to please locals and tourists alike.

well it is closing soon which is too bad so we thought we would drop in a grab some lunch while still here.....one server covering everything, almost all the tables in the bar area and an isolated one out in the main area, and bar tending too....she did a great job...martinis were good and as ordered , wife really like d the cucumber one...fish and chips and smoked haddock and leek pie, very good and an app of chicken liver pate (forgot what they called it) which was great...so it closes on the 27th, you have 2 weeks to enjoy this place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took my wife, who is of English descent, to the Coat of Arms last night. We had the Curry and Chips, which is an appetizer unlike anything in any other restaurant. Our waitress (server #30) was attentive and friendly. While there were plenty of options on the menu, we ordered traditional English fare -- fish and chips, mushy peas, scotch eggs, and draught beer. It all arrived on time. The peas were fresh and tasty and so was the haddock. We had no room for desert, but we will next time!

A great little pub with some excellent English food. My go-to dishes are the bangers & mash or the curry chicken, both excellent. My girlfriend always gets one of their meat pies with the "to die for" flaky crust. To put one negative in here, itd be nice if they could spruce up their entryway. If I wasnt recommended this place by family, Id have walked right past. But dont let the shabby entrance fool you, inside is your fix for fish & chips!
