Came in at a very busy time with no tables available. That wouldnt have been a problem if we could have been put on a list but the seat yourself policy made it very stressful in trying to get a table. Had to search around for a table and circle the restaraunt at least 5 times. So we ended up just keeping our eye on a certain table and waited for them to leave for 35 minutes. (Which was awkward because they could tell we were staring at them, but we didnt want anyone stealing the table so we had to keep an eye on them.) Then we get seated and order chips and cheese. Which was flavourless and the chips were chewy and not very good. The entrees were super good, but they messed up our order. It just all around wasnt a very good experience. Id definitely go back for the Mac n cheese burger, but the seat yourself policy was too stressful and i dont want to return.

Full disclosure: I loved the old windbag. The big antique wooden bar and tiny old TV off in the corner have been replaced by a massive industrial steel girder bar in the middle of the space. Televisions adorn all the walls and it gets super loud. Gone are the quiet nooks and crannies. This is a new restaurant with the same name and location. The positive: they have added a front porch and a big garage door that connects the bar to the walking mall in a way that the old place never did. Place is clean and new and they fixed they old bathrooms so theyre not weird anymore. Service was quick and friendly. On its own I think this is a cool addition to the walking mall but it will be hard to stop comparing it to the old one.

Exceptional service, even when they were packed. We were absolutely satisfied by our entrees - my boyfriend had the Mac & Cheese Burger, which was huge, and I had the Southern Fried Chicken Mac. The Mac & Cheese is delicious. We were also impressed by the low prices. The only thing I will warn against having is the nachos. They are incredibly bland (even the pico de gallo served alongside them is bland). Im almost certain the nacho sauce has peanut butter in it, which would be fine if it actually was flavorful, but it wasnt.

The windbag is a place where youre going to enjoy history as well as a good meal. the bar is very comfortable especially if you go on a nice cold day. Josh will make you feel at home. you can get good American food, sizable portions and a nice old fashion Western atmosphere. really any sandwich will be great food. After reading some of the reviews I can agree that it is not a place to go if youre in a hurry , but then again if you were in a hurry you would pick a different destinations and not Helena. Enjoy... I loved it.

The New Windbag is airy and comfortable. The beautiful tin tiled ceiling remains. Our whole family enjoys the menu-try a Dirty Girl made with Made in Montana bourbon cream! The desserts are huge so order for two or more. They have gluten free buns-just ask for them. A Great Place to take friends on the Gulch. Been there at least 6 times so far this year. Fantastic service especially Kayla who is always on top of things-Thanks!

Once a classic Helena favorite, now another tasteless sports bar w/ glaring lights and distracting big-screens. Food is expensive and woefully average. The historically-significant building has been gutted of its original charm, while any claim to preserving the past is featured in a blown-up mugshot of Big Dorothy; right next to the laser light show. The waitress uniforms are jean booty shorts, I mean...enough said.

It was a very long wait about 35 minutes, but the staff was kind and understanding. I think it was just unusually busy that night(it was a Wednesday). I ordered the mac and cheese burger which would have been good if my mac and cheese didnt all fall off after my first bite. They make home made chips that I found very addicting. Their sweet potato fries were really good with the aioli sauce.

The hamburger did have good beef thats all I have nice to say about this joint. $12. 95 for a side salad and burger. Really o it was a mushroom burger didnt even use portabella mushrooms... They only use canola oil ...they need to research C.oil its terrible for us. basic ly I was completely unimpressed with this tourist trap.. Omg crab cakes were a total disgrace to the dish.and the crab

Service was good, atmosphere was alright, if you like a loud, packed bar/restaurant (even on a weeknight). Menu is super boring with nothing original and mostly fried food. I ordered a dish off the "favorites" portion of the menu and it was soggy and hard to find any meat in it. I was not able to eat it. I might go back for drinks sometime but I will not be eating there again.

The more portly middle aged man at the bar wouldnt accept my real, WA state issued drivers license. I even showed him the temporary one that I happened to have and my debit card. He told me he just didnt trust me and was rather rude. Im used to getting carded because I look very young and Im only 22, but Ive never had someone just reject my ID for no reason.

Called 15 minutes out asking if they could get 25+ in, they said no problem. When we arrived they already had the tables all setup. Service was super fast for such a large group. The Mac n Cheese burger was delicious, cooked perfectly. Other hits were the Rueben, Buffalo Mac, Philly.... Service crew hit it out of the park.

You can feel the history in this place. The Windbag has a great bar staff who know what they are doing. Large beer selection and my girl loves the martinis. If you luck out and the blackened halibut is on the special, I highly recommend it. Great place for out of towners who want a taste of the local vibe.

Went for lunch last week and was so sad to see that there isnt much left of the "old" Windbag. Gone are the steaks, prime rib, seafood, quiches, and great salads. Now just a typical "sports" bar with lots of high top tables. Easy to see that they cater to a much younger crowd. The food was average.

Seat yourself policy in a new, popular restaurant is patently stupid. Weve been in twice trying to find a table and none were available, leaving us with no idea as to when one might open up. One more time, and if its the same you will have lost customers for life.

After a day of being dragged up Mts. Ascension and Helena, I was pretty sure the burger, fries and local beer were the best things I had ever tasted. (They were pretty darn good). Clearly a local favorite tucked into a charming, walkable downtown area.
