Without a doubt, the worst customer experience I have received anywhere on the planet recently. A Cafe Trio server made at which I first thought was an innocuous mistake by telling me that my prepaid gift card from American Express did not have available funds. Fine, I used another form of payment. Upon checking my American Express balance the next day I see TWO charges from Cafe Trio in different amounts on the American Express card. I call to request they resolve the multiple payments and they claim it is not their error, BUT they have credited my account back - why credit my account back if this is not your error? Mind you this is a restaurant I have paid $20,000+ to over a four year period - I gave them the benefit of the doubt on this incident. I visit Cafe Trio a week later and am charged for an extra drink I did not have - I pay the bill, although questioning Cafe Trios newly developed business practices. I sense a pattern developing - perhaps Cafe Trio treats loyal customers unloyally, perhaps Tai Nguyen is behind on his taxes, or perhaps he has decided it is a prudent business practice to overcharge those who spend in his establishment frequently, in the hopes that they will overlook fraudulent charges. A month later my spouse and I stop in to enjoy a few drinks and my spouse is informed by the co-owner, Tai Nguyen that I am not welcome back, of course not until after we have requested our check and heading out. Questioning being overcharged is apparently not acceptable at Cafe Trio. Its become patently obvious that the co-owner of Cafe Trio, Tai Nguyen, is either mentally ill or, at best, unapologetic when Cafe Trio errors. Who in their right mind would overcharge a frequent customer who has paid over $20,000 at their establishment over a four year period and then actually ask them not to come back due to Cafe Trios mistakes? Why not just rectify the problem and credit the customers card back for the overcharge and apologize? (My card was ultimately credited back - but not without me expending multiple efforts of due diligence on correcting Cafe Trios overbilling schemes). In fact, I would venture that most restaurants who make a mistake of this nature would offer the aggrieved patron a free meal. Not Tai Nguyen - his response is to blame his customers and ask them to leave. I am utterly baffled. In twenty years of fine-dining, and well through six-figures of dining dollars spent, I have never been asked to not come back to a restaurant or had an experience even close to this. There are plenty of great restaurants on Kansas Citys Country Club Plaza - I highly encourage you to visit them instead of Cafe Trio. If something like this happens to someone who has spent over five figures at Cafe Trio, it is undoubtedly happening to those who spend less. (In case any of you think any part of this review is fabricated, my wife, who had lunched almost daily at Cafe Trio for four years until tomorrow, has vowed never to return [she was told by Tai she is still welcome back, but the guy who disputed the bill i.e. me, and who has paid all the Cafe Trio bills, is not]).

I went to to Cafe Trio with a two other people yesterday evening around 6:00. It was fairly busy which is to be expected around that time. Being that it was a nice day we asked the hostess if we could sit outside. She went to check and told us it would be a while, which again is completely fine. I do not mind waiting. She told us to feel free to sit at the bar either inside or out. Since we wanted to be outside we decided to sit at the bar on the patio. I was a little surprised to see that the bar outside was completely empty, there was literally no one else sitting there. Also somewhat irritating were the several empty tables and bar-tops. There were probably around eight open tables/bar-tops which made us wonder why it would "be a little while" before we could be seated. When we sat down at the bar the bartender did not acknowledge us, not a hello, hi, glance, nothing. He seemed to be upset that we had decided to sit there (as if his job wasnt dependent upon my presence and my money) and continued cleaning some glasses and talking to another server/bartender. I heard him remark about a group of people he was serving inside as being "really douchey". Even if they were "really douchey" it should not be discussed in front of other patrons. How do you expect your other guests to feel when hearing one of your staff make that sort of comment? He finally brought our menus and still did not say anything to us. We were in the mood for wine and when my wife asked him for a wine menu he acted "really douchey" and rolled his eyes before giving us the menu. After waiting for around 10-15 minutes to just put in our drink order we decided to leave. I know plenty of other bartenders that love their trade and their patrons. We will not be going back to Cafe Trio anytime soon.

Lunch today absolutely lived up to the hype! Its easy to see how Cafe Trio has won so many awards in the short time they have been open. Five of us dined together, so we got to try a little bit of everything. Now, they were out of the fried oysters and their signature bloody mary, which were 2 of the main reasons we went here for lunch. But between the service and the food, Cafe Trio more then made up for it. Our server, Adam, was very professional, witty & knowledgeable and we will be requesting him in the future. Where to start, well I will definitely be stealing a few recipe ideas, starting with the Charred Brussel Sprouts. Their Mac Daddy was worthy of the title, Best Macncheese in Kc. Creamy, sharp, rich and full of contrasting textures and flavors between the veggies and the perfectly toasted cheese on top. Adam suggested I add grilled chicken and it really made the dish! The gourmet grilled cheese, Trio Burger & fish tacos were as good as Ive had anywhere! Honestly, each could contend for "Best in class" if they were put up against any of Cafe Trios restaurant rivals in town. I also had a spicy, fall pear sangria that made my mouth water with each sip. The desserts put us over the top and were a perfect ending to a truly perfect dining experience! Cannot wait to go back to Cafe Trio! I think I will be a regular for lunch, dinner and especially the great Happy Hour specials!

I wouldnt waste my time going to this place. 3 hours to get food and eat and get out after having a reservation. Then they charged extra to my daughters credit card because we were short some of our party because they had to cancel for an emergency (but the restaurant filled those seats immediately at the table that was released). Nobody wanted to try to hear any of our concerns or try to provide ANY customer service in this matter. I used to work in a restaurant, and we never talked so disrespectfully to our customers as my two daughters have been spoken to during this interaction. You can be sure theyll never see another dime of my money. And the food wasnt as great as we were led to believe!!
