Hobie’s is in a pretty interesting location. It’s sandwiched between Goodrich’s Shop-Rite and a Subway. We made our way inside and found a huge menu chalkboard right away. After deciding on sandwiches, we walked up to the “Place Orders Here” sign. It didnt’ really look right, but we did what the sign said anyway. After a few minutes, a very hesitant employee came over to take our orders. My guess is he is pretty new. He didn’t seem to sure of himself taking our orders. J ordered the Chicken Breast which came with their special “South of the Border” sauce, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomato on wheat bread. She asked to keep the tomato off, but they put it on anyway. She loved the sandwich. Neither of us could really pinpoint what was in the sauce, but she said it was delicious. Getting the tomato on the sandwich is a little disappointing, but not that big of a deal. They were small enough that they didn’t leave a lot of residue on the sandwich. I ordered the Corned Beef sandwich. There was nothing on the sandwich other than the Corned Beef which was fine with me. The sandwich was served on a toasted dark rye bread. At first glance, I thought there was more bread than beef, but when I picked it up, I could see that was just an illusion. There was a good chunk of beef on the bread. I don’t eat corned beef that often, but this was pretty good. I like that they didn’t try to ruin it with a ton of toppings. After placing our order, we moved down the counter to get drinks, chips and to pay. We grabbed out Diet Pepsi’s then made our way to the register. We sat there for quite a while. The two guys working behind the counter were making our sandwiches and again, it looked like one of them was training. Another, older gentleman who was sitting in the dining room on his laptop got up and rang up our order. When we grabbed our sandwiches, he let us know that chips also came with the meal, so I grabbed a bag of BBQ and J got a bag of sweet BBQ. Neither of us have ever had that before and they were quite interesting. The dining room is neat. Being so close to MSU, you can imagine that they carry the Spartan theme throughout. I grabbed a pub style table near the back of the room. The interesting thing is the bench along the wall. It’s a typical bench type seating, but it’s higher off the ground. There’s a brass rail that runs along the bottom so you can step up. When J sat down, she noticed something interesting about the tables. They all looked like they used to be part of a basketball floor. After looking around, I’m pretty sure she’s right. The tables are all the same type of hardwood and many of them have big patches of green and yellow painted on them. Put them together and they make up the lane of some long retired basketball court. Hobie’s was another good choice. There’s a more popular sandwich shop next door, but why you would chose that over Hobie’s is a mystery to me. Hobie’s was a good meal at a pretty good price. For the two sandwiches, two chips, and two pops, we managed to get out of there for under $14. Great option for a quick, delicious meal before a game or any other time you’re craving good sandwiches.

Worst french dip I have ever been served. The sandwich tasted fine but the real issue was that I was only given a single piece of roast beef that was folded in half for the whole sandwich. If you were to look very closely and peel back the bread you could tell that it was in fact a french dip sandwich. This french dip was the floppiest, saddest, and most un-fulfilling sandwich that I have ever encountered. The French would be insulted to know that this sort of sandwich was being served on the other side of the pond. I had tried this place on a whim because it was nearby and sounded like a local spot. I was wrong with my expectations. This place is dated, dirty, and does not put much effort into making sure their customers are pleased with what they are serving. Will not be returning.

Trying to only patronize local establishments, we stopped in to Hobies after hubby heard an ad on the radio. There was a musty smell as soon as we opened the door. I opted for the chicken caesar baked potato. It was a plain reheated potato with a dozen small cubes of cooked chicken and a sprinkling of processed parmesan cheese. A side container of dressing. Disappointing. Hubby got a caesar salad, the bagged stuff from Sysco with some large croutons and dressing on the side. Not at all what we were expecting. The biggest disappointment however, was how worn and filthy the seat cushions were. I sat on my coat.

I have lived in East Lansing my whole life and had never heard of Hobies until the recent Groupon promotion. Decided to stop in today and check it out; and was excited to try the soup which had been voted best in Lansing. The staff were friendly and the menu was good, sandwhiches were large and well priced; mine was great! The only downfall was the soup, it was fine but given its great reviews I expected it to be fantastic. I would go back for the sandwhiches but probably not order soup next time, that was a little disappointing.

Visited once, the people are very kind and friendly-- kinda mom and poppish like. Service and food are styled like a cafeterias: You order, get your drinks, and pay all while wrapping around a curved table. This can confuse new people (my friend said she stood near the door and left after thinking no one was working once). For food, I had the spinach pie and greek salad and both were good. Vegetarians will find only two things they can trust= spinach pie and the veggie sub, which is just cheese and peppers.

This is one of the only locally owned and operated establishments that has survived in East Lansing for decades. This is because the soup and sandwiches are exceptional. Its not as fancy as corporate chains similar to it but that is part of its charm. Great place to visit with friends, study, and most importantly, eat.

I was in East Lansing for business and saw the sandwich shop. It was probably the best Ruben ive ever had! I wish that I lived in the area so I could come back all the time. I would definitely recommend Hobies to anyone who likes a good sandwitch.

Has gone downhill. They used to have really good soups but now their soup selections are so boring and their is something left to be desired with them. I have also tried their sandwiches and they were just your average sandwich.

Homely and down to earth. Large variety of hot soups, and a selection of good sandwiches. Usually busy over the lunch hour, but you can still get in and out in a half hour.

Theyve really updated the inside and now have a bar. The food was great. Service was fast. I was able to get in and get out on my lunch hour. Satisfied customer!
