Ive never written a review for a restaurant before because Ive never found it necessary to criticize a restaurant (Ive had family members who worked as dishwashers in restaurants and understand they can be stressful places) nor do I think I need to praise great restaurants because others will naturally compliment them in reviews. My experience with Umi Sushi was my second worst meal in the US (I moved here in 1995) and the only time Ive felt borderline discriminated against for whatever reasons (my significant other and I Chinese). My significant other and I walked into the restaurant at 7PM on Friday. It was a somewhat cold night and only two groups were in the entire restaurant. There were 5 booths open and I thought it was reasonable to ask for a booth. I politely asked for a booth and my request my promptly shut down by the waitress/manager woman. Feeling a bit awkward, we sat down and ordered our food; the food quality was fine but our tiny table was very cluttered (two udons, two salads, two mugs of tea, sashimi appetizer, and two orders of maki rolls). Again, this would have been much easier had we been given a booth. Around this time, the next two customers (a Caucasian couple) walked into the restaurant. The same waitress greeted them with a HUGE smile and happily directed them to the booth I had requested. As upset as I was at this point, I asked the waitress why she didnt allow us to sit there but let the other couple, she smiled to be and said it happens. Also, I ordered a Nabeyaki udon this time and it was served without any shrimp tempura. Ive ordered it so many times in this restaurant before and it was always served with shrimp tempura. However, when I asked the waitress, she told me this udon was vegetarian. I wonder if she just made that up. It was a very disappointing and unpleasant experience. I have spent ~$300 dollars at Umi in the past two years but they certainly lost a very loyal customer tonight. I will gladly drive the extra 30 miles and eat my udon at Ajishan in Novi instead.

We ordered take-out and were disappointed. The food tasted good, but it seems like theyre purposely being cheap and giving you as little food as possible. First of all, this is the only sushi place Ive ever been to that doesnt include miso soup or ginger salad with your order. We got it anyway, being hungry. I paid nearly $40 for three specialty rolls plus salads for two people. At any other Ann Arbor sushi place, the would leave us feeling satisfied at least. But here we are, both still hungry and $40 poorer. I dont think Ill be returning.

I stopped by Umi for an early dinner on a football game day and the dining room was predictably slow. Across the board the presentation was fantastic, but it wasnt as delicious as it was beautiful. Our takoykai appetizer didnt have much octopus in it and we were hoping for more pieces. My gyudon was good but not exceptional; my date didnt think that her salmon rice bowl was very flavorful. All-in-all, an enjoyable meal but the slow dining room and median-quality food made me feel like I overpaid. A good but not standout meal.

I am so furious that i just spent $25 on food poisoning. unless you are really into sushi that is falling apart and made with fish that is clearly not fresh, do NOT patronize this lousy excuse for a sushi place. I ate 5 or 6 pieces just because I was hungry and had spent my hard-earned money on it. but after both my boyfriend and i both started feeling completely sick to our stomachs, i threw the rest away. seriously, do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this place as you can!!!

Ive been to this place for about five times by now, and the menus are inconsistently served. I mean, the thicknesses of the raw fish (for example, salmon) on the sushi were different for every time. It was thick one day and very thin the other day. I do not think I am going back to this place again. I do not want to risk my money on betting for the thinly sliced sushi.

The sushi was good and well made. For the amount that I ordered it was a fairly decent price. It isnt cheap but a better cost than some of the more expensive places around town. I ordered over the phone. The food was ready when I got there in about 10 minutes. The place had a simple wood decor. There was no one else in the restaurant. The staff was kind and sociable.

Just tried this place the first time.. pretty disappointed.. rice is old.. rolls that are supposed to be hot are cold and taste like the stuff on top has been sitting out for hours. I called in to complain .. and I never complain and I never write reviews .. maybe 4 in my life.. when I called in the guy just said Im sorry didnt even offer to fix the situation

Ive been to this place multiple times now. Bibimbap is relatively hard to mess up so if in doubt, get that. Miso soup and ginger salad are fairly standard. The sushi was pretty decent; nothing horrible really stood out to me. Both times Ive gone, there was not a lot of people so staff was friendly and quick. Not having to find parking is an added plus too.

Recently I ordered the sushi & sashimi lunch, and I was still hungry afterwards. The same thing happened when I ordered the lunch special. I am not a big girl, either! The only time I feel full is with the chirashi sushi. For the price, I feel that their portion sizes are too small. The fish is fresh and tasty though.

Off the beaten path, this is a underrated sushi joint in Ann Arbor. I loved the lobster roll as it came with fried lobster balls on top of the rolls itself. The price is on par with other sushi restaurants. Nothing proprietary about it that separates it from other places but the staff is nice.

Didnt get the bang for my buck that I expected. The hostess kept telling me to leave and come back in 10-15 minutes to pick up my carry out. It was over 90 degrees outside and I walked to the restaurant. It would have been good customer service to ask me to wait inside (in the AC).

Great sushi, friendly staff with fast service. Go there for my one hour lunch all the time. They have also set up the food prior to us getting there when going in a group. So that as soon as we get there we can eat and leave so we make it back to work on time.

5 stars is not enough. This place is super dope. Sushi Man Taylor is the man! The staff at this is place is incredibly friendly and the service is incredible. I highly recommend you go here. Pro tip: sit at the bar and say Hi to the guys making your sushi ;-)

I eat here at least once a week. The sushi and sashimi bento box is the best! The price is a little high, but you get a lot for the money. Also love that the green tea is brewed loose leaf and brought to your table in a french press. Delish!
