Best little restaurant you never heard of. I used to frequent this restaurant when they were located in Brookline a few years back, and I wasnt aware they had moved until maybe two years ago. I thought they had closed. Anyway, I have been to the Newton location several times, and while it lacks some of the charm of the old location (it was VERY confined, tables were all so close together you often felt as though you were having dinner at a party full of strangers, but this was part of the allure for me) the new locale is very nice and a good place for a date or a celebration. It has a more traditional set up that you would expect in from a restaurant. Certain nights, they have a pianist who comes in and plays Russian songs and sings, very charming. The food is fantastic. Fortunately, I have never encountered any of the issues the previous reviewers have. My reservations have always gone smoothly, I have never experienced bugs in the food and the service has always been friendly and warm. It is regrettable these other reviewers had such miserable experiences, I hope they would give this place another shot. Im certain they must have caught this place on a bad night, it would be a shame if they didnt experience this place at its finest, though understandable as any business should strive to be at its finest every night, especially when it comes to the service industry. That being said, I cant recommend this place enough, try it out, hopefully youll get the Cafe St Petersburg I know and love and not the one these other folks have found.

I am a Russian American myself and have tried various Russian restaurants around Boston area, tried them all to be exact. This place has nice ambiance, location, good food and music. This is my favorite place for banquets, which are the "standard" in Russian community in the States to celebrate a birthday, etc. The not so good areas are: reservation process is unreliable (just like others said) - I scheduled a decent size party not long ago for my wifes birthday, with some specific instructions about seating location, music band. I almost had to cancel it as the guys at the front desk were saying one thing and doing another. Both I and my wife called them numerous times to straighten things out, and even though it worked out eventually, they CANNOT BE TRUSTED at the reservation desk. Thats my main concern, and I believe it is not acceptable for a place trying present themselves as "above average". This issue has traces of the typical BS service in former SU, which we were fortunate to escape in the States. In addition, they dont seem to care too much OR the owner doesnt know/care. They should.

My friends and I spend an amazing evening at this place. We ordered many different dishes and everything came out just perfect. We also ordered vodka with garlic flavor and it was very good :-) Everything from bottles that they bring their home made spirits to the way they serve their dishes was great. The only disappointment was is a lack of any kind of entertainment (no music at all). It felt way too quiet for Friday night. Our waiter was very professional and very friendly. One suggestion to the owners - please add kvas to your menu. Non alcohol beverages definitely missing this item. Thank you for a nice evening.

I am russian and that place gave a good nostalgia feeling. there was a guy playing the piano and singing songs from the old movies which i loved! About the food:we had vegetable zakuska for 2 which was simply great. then i had solyanka and my bf had Fois Gras,both were delicious. then i had chicken tabaka and unfortunately it wasnt that great,too salty,id recommend to avoid that. my bf had Sturgeon Steak which he liked. the atmosphere is a bit noisy,there were two parties celebrating something and after a good amount of vodka they got loud and we could barely hear each other in that lil room. i felt myself home haha

My friends and I love the place, but lately, it has gotten to be very different. We had a reservation for 8:30, but we were running late, so we called then and told them that we were going to be there at 9 and it was ok, as we pull up to park the car, we get a call from the manager saying that the kitchen closed and they wont be able to seat us. The fact that they are open til midnight on a sat, it became clear to us that that was total BS. We drove from far away.

My boyfriend and I had our first date here (lunch) several months ago throw-a-dart-at-google-maps style (neither of us are Russian). It was really good - we would definitely go back, especially if there is music/drinking at night. I cant say I exactly remember the names of everything we ate but it was all tasty, the waiter was attentive, food took average amount of time to come out, etc.

It was all wonderful! Even the large group of loud, Russian men were part of the atmosphere! We befriended them and enjoyed a great time. Were newbies to Russian food so the 4 of us all ordered different things and shared from appetizers to desserts. EVERYTHING was GREAT.

atmosphere is nice. food is almost good. took them forever(1 hour) to cook a piece of duck. meals are small, compared to any other restaurant(american, chinese, italian) and also overpriced. I would never come back again.
