This place does an excellent job all around. A good assortment, but not so much that its overwhelming. Everything is fresh, everything is delicious, and everything is classic. This place puts to rest the constant insistence from those obnoxious people who say "well you just cant get a good baguette/croissant/whatever outside of France." Nonsense. Everything here is exactly as it should be, and that goes for the price as well. Yes its more expensive than your corn muffin from the grocery store, but for what youre getting, its actually a deal. The wait is also not very long - I assume those who complain about delays are used to getting their pastries while inside their cars at Dunkin Donuts. Seating IS very limited, so consider this place as a last stop before you head home for brunch or something so you can enjoy your stuff at home. Lacking in the beverages department, but you know what? Its a bakery.

All I ever heard was how awesome the Standard Baking Company was. It seemed like any true Portlander knew and loved this place. I had always wanted to stop here to see what everyone was raving out, and when I finally had my chance I was thoroughly, thoroughly disappointed and disgusted. Not only was the selection incredibly small and unimpressive (the baked goods physically looked dried out), but the staff was also incredibly rude. They blatantly gave nasty looks to the customers, were short with them, and even ignored several us. I know Im not the only one whos noticed this about them either: various friends of mine have commented on the same problem. Anyway, I was so put-off by their arrogant and apathetic attitudes (and unappetizing looking food), that we left shortly after arriving. I wouldnt give my money to a place that clearly has no regard for their customers.

This bakery is a little expensive. As a Montrealer croissant are part of my usual diet and almond croissant are sold in every school cafeteria, every work place, so i was kinda surprised by the prices here as for me this is nowhere near a luxurious thing. Croissants are in Quebec what Donuts are to USA. A cheap treat but having that said here in USA a good croissant, a pain au chocolat (chocolatine) or an almond croissant are a little harder to find and theirs were very good. The almond one was a little too buttery tasting for my taste but their regular and chocolate croissant were very good. What for me really worth the 4☆ is THE CHOCOLATE CORK. Oh my this was a little piece of heaven. Call ahead cuz they dont make them everyday!

After a disappointing breakfast at a local chain coffee house the day before we stumbled upon the Standard Baking Co. on our way to East End beach with my dog. We made it a point to stop here whenever we took the dog for a walk. Their pastries were amazing and the coffee/tea just what we needed on a cold winter morning. Being set back from the road behind a parking lot makes this feel like you have found Portlands preeminent hidden gem, even if it is well known and the line of customers trending on the long side.

We got there a few minutes after they opened and there was already a line out the door, always a good sign! Staff was friendly and efficient. The breads and pastries were amazing! We got an assortment including some croissants, pastries, and loaves of bread. The prosciutto croissant was awesome. We very quickly consumed them once we were in the car. Will definitely be back the next time were in town! Parking can be a little tricky in that part of town, so try to get there early.

Good bread can be very difficult to find in this country. Not at Standard - their bread is proper and their light and flaky croissants & bold, rich and dark coffees deserve mentions, too. I live in Portsmouth, NH, so I dont visit often, but wanted to share with the people at Standard that in my opinion, Portsmouth is underserved by bakeries and that a bakery like Standard would be very successful here.

This bakery is at a pretty rare level of quality. My wife and I are big into these types of small, artisan bakeries, having been to some of the best around the states. This one nails a lot of commonly botched items like brioche and croissants. The standards are taken to a new level. Grab and couple of baguettes, and dont even think twice about it! This place is awesome.

This place is amazing and any time Im near portland, Im going to have to stop by. The bread rolls are great, but what really made me in love was this buckwheat chocolate cookie thing they have. Seriously, best thing I ever tasted Also really friendly and great service! Love finding a place with amazing staff.

What a gem! Happened upon this place after a disappointing meal around the corner. Great coffee, the best cuppa tea Ive had out in ages. Molasses spice cookies to die for. Wonderful selection of breads and scones. Very nice staff. Thank God its not closer to home or Id be big as a house!

An absolute gem. Their food is always delicious and the staff are wonderful. The sights and smells all tell you that you are in a first-class bakery. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with this place . . . except that they dont serve iced coffee in the winter. Cest la vie.

Look. Ive lived in five Northeastern states (including a year in Brooklyn), the UK, and France. Ive been to Vienna, Amsterdam, Naples, and Rome. Standard Bakery remains the best bakery so have ever been to. It will always be a favorite. The gingerbread is a must have.

Um, just spectacular baked treats and breads. Both mornings that we were in Portland my family got breakfast here, along with bread for later. The second day we got more bread for later than the first day, because at that point we knew how good it was.

What an amazing bakery, absolutely the best in the area and one of the best weve ever been to. We stopped by here every night to try something new while on holiday, and the great thing is, they always have something new to try.

My must visit placé whenever we go to Porte. We love their olive loaf, it is just awesome. I grew up in Europe and their bread reminds me of the kind of bread I had as kid, especially their Maine Miche and the Main 5 Grain.

Ive had some of the best Pain au Chocolate and Almond Croissants outside of Paris in this place. If you want something a little more rich, the Chocolate Cork and Morning Buns are heavenly. Easy parking, and quick service.

THEY ARE DELICIOUS AND AWESOME. Get yourself a nice loaf of counrty sour dough and make sandwiches ALL DAY. Also, if you call ahead they can place stuff aside for you since they do sell out often and quickly.

Best baguettes anywhere west of France. Dont miss the croissants and pain au chocolate. Pain au levain, other breads excellent. Its sticky buns set the standard around here and are sold all over town.

Great place to pick up breakfast and pastry snacks for the day. Wide selection. Small seating area inside was packed at the weekend so we just bought and went to the harbour. Coffee also very good.
