Conundrum is a wine bar a little off the beaten path. I expected it to be in town Freeport where all the tourists frequent, but you have to drive a few miles out of town to get there. When you walk in the front door, there is a small bar and a few smaller intimate tables in the main room. There is also a large back room that is enclosed, but seems to be an addition added on to the main building. The group I was with sat in this back room at a large table. There were some large and small tables, as well as some wicker chairs and small fireplaces. Along the ceiling were some string lights to set the mood, although half of the string lights were burnt out. We did have to swat at a couple of mosquitos.. The major draw to this place is the huge menu. They probably have every wine or champagne you can think of, as well as some specialty cocktail drinks. You can buy by the half glass, glass, or bottle. My boyfriend and I split a bottle of prosecco for $20 and were happy with the quality and amount for the price. This also turned out to be a good decision because the service ended up being on the slower side. It was nice having the bottle on ice at the table so we didnt have to wait and try to waive down our server for refills (like other people at my table had to do). Glancing at the food menu, the prices were a little higher than my liking. I expected this though for a wine bar. We did end up ordering a single cheese plate for $14. It was very tasty, but expensive. Again, this is what I expected for what this establishment is trying to be. However, the atmosphere was very welcoming and non-pretentious.

I looked forward to this for months- 9 months to be exact. I was excited to try this place after all the great reviews. Wow- was I disappointed!! Our server was ID#177, sorry, we dont know her name because she didnt even take the time to introduce herself. If you knew my boyfriend and I, you would know that we are laid back and happy go lucky. She came over and threw the menus at us. She said I will be back. No introduction, no explanation, ok.... We thought maybe she was just busy. Then, she came back. #177 was awful. She didnt make eye contact, didnt explain any wines, she hurried us to make a selection and walked off curtly. My boyfriend asked if she was okay because she seemed upset. She snapped back, "Im fine." We asked for the check because it wasnt wasnt a great experience. When she brought the check back, she said rudely, "Well, I hope your night gets better." And we said, "We hope YOUR night gets better." She tried to argue with us! "My night is just great, ok!" We left a tip with the note, "Sometimes you get what you dont deserve." We asked for the manager and he was very nonchalant. He defended her behavior (we are convinced that something else is going on to be that out of touch with reality) and said that he would be happy to wait on us instead. I WILL wait... for this place to close.

My husband and I went here one Friday evening a few weeks ago, on a whim as we were near by. We were pleasantly surprised. First, by the knowledge of the Sommelier of Austrian wines - our favorite. And then by the food, it was fresh, seasonal and delicious. I had the Lamb Bolognese, which was well flavored and tasty. But my husband had the better meal, which I could not keep from stealing bites of.. The Pork Ramen, which was spot on!! The broth was complex, aromatic, rich, and delicious, the pork with a beautiful caramelized crust and falling apart tender on the inside, baby bok choy cooked to perfection, just tender-crisp, and the crowning glory, ajitsuke tamago— a perfectly soft-boiled egg marinated in a sweet and salty soy-based sauce, split in half and floating on the surface, ready to enrich and flavor your broth, just breathtakingly delicious... Absolutely the BEST food and wine weve had in a very long time!! 5 Stars!! This place is definitely a repeat.. I will be dreaming of that Ramen for months..

I have had dinner at Conundrum numerous times and have always had a great dining experience. The creative menu changes seasonally and never fails to deliver from appetizers to desserts. Theres always something new to tempt your taste buds as well as the Conundrum favorites, truly something for everyone from all price ranges. The wine list is extensive and the martinis are amazing, the key lime is one of my favorites. The patio in the back is a cozy place to gather with friends for an evening of great food and drinks; its heated with wood stoves for the cooler months. The wait staff are always friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. This place is a hidden gem just outside of Portland, tucked away behind the Big Wooden Indian on the way to Freeport.

Went for dinner 5/28/11 The dinner was great, The wines were wonderful. Loved the ambiance. That being said, service was unforgiveably slow. I think it was a problem with the kitchen. My husbandand I waited one hour for our starters-soup and a salad. There is no need for such a delay in items that dont require a lot of cooking time. I dont mind a leisurely pace, but this was ridiculous. Our poor waitress seemed over worked and was managing many tables. Because everything else was so good, we will return, but perhaps not on a Saturday evening.

This place is a gem. Ive been half a dozen times in the past few years and its always been a superb experience. The wine list, as youd expect, is mammoth and caters to every taste. The food, moreover, is also exceptionally good. The dishes are complex and really well made -- much better than youd expect from a wine bar on the side of a busy road a few miles out of town. In my experience the service has always been great and I especially like the fact that the place is fairly low key. Theres really nothing not to like.

A quaint little restaurant, hidden , but favorited by all of its regulars. A dimly lit experience, with multiple rooms, and something for everyone. An extensive wine list with, cocktails and local breweries on tap, and also a seasonal menu with tastes you may have never imagined. One experience, and you may become the next regular. The staff was very personable and friendly, and the Bartender Megan was full of smiles! Definitely, one of my best first experiences, and now I know why someone referred me!

We were staying across the street and Casco Bay Inn, a lovely place and were watching all the people parking in the back of the restaurant so we walked over. What a teriffic suprise! The staff was so friendly and the food was a 10+++ I had the portobella mushroom with fresh tomato sauce (and I mean fresh!) over creamy polenta. One of the best meals Ive ever had. Wonderful wine choices. We would definitely return. We wish them great success.

YUM. This place has the best food, servings are huge, tons of fresh, innovative choices that change seasonally. Get the local burger with bacon jam and fresh baked potato wedges-because this burger cant be beat. Cool atmosphere, great service, and friendly owner who is always around to chat about wine. 40 amazing wines by the glass, fun cocktails, you name it, they have it. I obviously cant say enough...
