The doughnut was practically inedible. My wife and I ordered two chocolate yeast doughnuts with sprinkles, but what we were given resembled a cake doughnut. On inspection it was clear that the doughnut was cooked in the oil way to long. The outside tasted slightly burnt and the inside was heavy, dense, flavorless, and had the consistency of eating a sponge. The chocolate glaze was unable to counter the horrible taste. The only component of the pastry that was good was the sprinkles. We also ordered two pecan sticky buns. The pecans and glaze were very good, but the roll itself had the same dense chewy texture that the doughnut exhibited. My wife was unable to finish hers. For the two inedible doughnuts and two pecan sticky buns we were charged nine dollars. This is one fool who will not part with his money at Deluxe cake and Pastries ever again, and I would suggest that if you value your taste buds you do not as well.

Im from Iowa City, but I live in New York City. I travel the world and have been to some of the top rated bakeries anywhere. Deluxe is definitely amongst the best. Every time I return home, I make sure to stop by. The owner, Jamie Powers, is a wonderful person an business owner. She is on site all the time and works along side her amazing staff. The ambiance is super cute and I highly recommend anything on the menu. If youre not sure what to get, its always a good rule of thumb to ask the owner / those who work there what their favorites are. They can usually tip you off to the best sellers or that unique delicious item that may be over looked otherwise. Stop by and enjoy!

Awful customer service! I had high hopes for this place as a friend had recommended them but from the moment I walked in, one of the pastry chefs was in a pissy mood and it showed... I placed an order that they told me I had to wait a day for and it would be ready around 8am. The next day, I showed up a little after 9 to be safe and they still werent done. Then when it did finally arrive, it looked like my order had just been tossed in a box that was way too large with no care for presentation. Tbh, it was disgraceful...I did not feel valued as a customer during any part of this process. Very annoying. Will not be returning...

Visited on a relaxing Saturday. Great vibe, solid baking, okay coffee. The best part was the atmosphere. Quiet neighborhood, nice patio, nice retro vibe inside. I enjoyed the old oven set up and the cute refill policy (only for those over 75). I ordered a chocolate croissant, which was solid. I came three hours after open though, so Im thinking it would have been amazing at 7:30am. Their cakes also looked amazing. $25 for a solid 8 person cake. Wish the coffee was a little better. I had a cappuccino, which was alright. Intelligentsia coffee, so it definitely has the potential to be great coffee.

This is the first time I ever reviewed a store. Bought a 1/3 Deluxe Sheet (Red Velvet) for a graduate student in my research group, successfully leaving with her Ph.D. I asked the store if I can order it on Friday, and pick it up on Monday. Although they were technically closed on Monday, not only did they arrange it so that it would be perfect and ready for pickup, but they also let me pick it up an hour earlier than we previously arranged! The cake was delicious and my colleagues from my department will be contacting this store for future business. A gem in Iowa City.

This place was adorable! We got the double-chocolate cookies, the chocolate chip cookies, a blondie, and a raspberry scone. The chocolate chip cookies and the scone were by far the best - the cookies were crunchy and rich with mini chocolate chips, and the scone had an amazing texture + wonderful raspberry flavor. I would have liked a bigger selection of non-cake items, but what they did have made a trip here certainly worth it.

Burnt cake is very disappointing. We ordered a nice cake for a birthday party. The designer made some recommendations, and the cake looked nice. But after cutting you could see the cake was overcooked all around the edges. I couldnt believe the baker would still decorate and sell this, but it was too late for our party. Sad to pay $40 for such disappointment! They are good at decorating but maybe not good at quality control.

LOVE this place. really great cakes and treats, but not a whole lot of variety which is my only complaint (probably due to being a slower/smaller buisness). They are very helpful and willing to work out your ideas for wedding cake etc. ABsolutely blown away by the reasonable prices.... for this quality of cake I would have expected to be paying twice the price. Also the owner is really nice:)

I cannot believe some of the reviews. I have been going there off and on since Deluxe opened and have ALWAYS been treated very well. Everything I have tried has been excellent so I am very surprised at some of reviews. And the people who work there always seem happy. I used to live in the neighborhood and my former neighbors go there every weekend. Could there be a reveiwer with a grudge?

Good baked goods, terrible service. Every time I go there they overcharge me, forget to put items in my box/bag, and are usually pretty rude. Today I went in and ordered two macaroons, and four drop cookies and they charged me $10, I get home and I only have the two macaroons in my bakery box. Not a good place for children either. I do not recommend.

I live just down the street from Deluxe and boy is it hard not to go just about every day. Their scones pastries and cakes are simply delicious. Also very unique and would be difficult to recreate, even for experienced bakers (like myself). Cute outdoor seating in the spring/summer/fall. And great customer service! Nothing to dislike!

I live and die for their mocha drop cookies and coffee. The owner is very charming. On Saturdays there are cronuts. There is a nice vibe and a feeling of community. A good place to sit outside, sip your coffee with friends, do some writing or reading. I miss it when Im away from Iowa City.

I had a baby shower cake made here, it was incredible. They made the cake exactly how I wanted it and best of all, it was DELICIOUS! I highly recommend this place for special occasion cakes. Everything they make is amazing!

I cant say enough about this bakery~ I ordered a peach pie it was absolutely amazing and the six people eating it with me were speechless! The baked it a hour before hand it was still warm, yum!! Great people a must stop

Please ignore the negative reviews, some people just cannot be appeased. DeLuxe has an amazing staff, delicious coffee, addicting croissants, and is very affordable! A great place to drink a cuppa and get work done!

We gave this place three opportunities and the benefit of the doubt since it was a neighborhood business within walking distance. The customer service was awful all three times, we will never go back.

Me and my son love going to Deluxe to get delicious Macaroons. Everything here looks divine and I cant wait to try it all. Definitely one of Iowa Citys hidden gems.
