First visit to this restaurant and will definitely be the last. The only thing deserving of any stars was the quick seating and plethora of Crayolas for the 5 year old in our group. We walked in at 7:30 on a Saturday night and were immediately seated which was awesome (party of 4). Our waitress came over and took our drink orders within a couple minutes. Started off pretty good. We waited about 10 minutes for the last person in our party to arrive, during which our server did not come back which was perfectly ok since she was aware we were waiting for another person. We did wait an excessive amount of time for her to come back after our 4th and final member had arrived. Finally she came back to take our orders. Came back near twenty minutes later saying the computer froze while she was putting in our order and she was coming back to clarify what we ordered. We specified exactly (for the second time) what our orders were. Everything was basic except for my enchiladas which I requested no onions and no sour cream. During our wait, my boyfriend had requested a Paloma to drink which is pretty much a staple drink at any Mexican restaurant. The server (not ours) pretty much laughed and said "she had no idea what what that even is" and walked away. Our food took another 30 minutes to arrive. Not once did one of the MANY servers, including our own, came back to refill waters or ask us if we needed anything during this hefty wait. My enchiladas came fully loaded with onions and sour cream. We had to flag down a server and send it back. I informed them I didnt want another plate because we had already waited a ridiculous FIFTY minutes for our food to get to us after ordering the first time. They still brought out my corrected plate which was the right thing to. I assume the manager was the was who come back to give me my food as well as ask if needed anything else. We asked her for refills on our waters which had all been finished for about 30 minutes by then. We finished the last of our mediocre food and had to wait another 5 minutes for a server to come anywhere relatively close to our table. The manager offered us a discount for the wait. We did not tip seeing as our actual server showed up at our table only 3 times during the hour and a half we spent in the restaurant. I have never in my life not left a tip for a server; I felt horrible but we were so incredibly disappointed and over the entire ordeal. We left at 9:00 - an hour and half after we arrived. Incredibly disappointing and all around subpar restaurant.

i appreciate a good detailed review. and i am a foody i love trying new resturants! i base everything around the food itself so here it goes. the salsa was a runny tomatoe base w a few chunks it tasted similiar to a can of stewed toatoes w no seasoning added. the rice and black beans were super basic i would compare to a tgi friday quality. i ordered thre chicken enchiladas w mole sauce. the mole was very good however the chicken was super dry and not seasoned at all. i mean thry literaly pulled it of the bird and shoved it inside the corn tortilla . all and all i would not come back and pay 15 bucks for this ! this place is good for someone who likes very blan food and likes over paying. very disappointed , geneva has way better mexican food than this ! i see a lot of reviews that say "authentic". please please dont believe them if u want good mexiacn food authentic that is drive to chicago and get it, this is far from it.

A lot of Mexican restaurants bill themselves as "authentic Mexican cuisine", but mostly that is at the low end of the scale. El Molcajete offers truly fine Mexican cuisine, including such delicacies as Quesadillas de Juitlacoche, Ensalada de Nopal, and much more. The food is well prepared, and very tasty! Like enchiladas? They offer a variety, including meatless ones with a choice of salsas, including verde (green), rojo (red), and mole poblano. In any case, I have been searching the Chicago area for a good Mexican restaurant offering juitlacoche for a long time, and found this one quite by accident - and it is only 3 miles from my home! Call me a happy camper! :-)

Made the mistake of going during Restaurant week in Geneva. Total time from seating to departure was 1 hour 35 minutes. No wonder people were waiting forever to be seated. Service slow. Food was ok but nothing special. Skip the fish tacos (tilapia). We ordered the dessert based on what the people beside us had. It looked good. When ours came it was missing the ice cream. When we asked about this we were then told they ran out of ice cream. Might want to mention this before taking the order and serving the dish without and have the customer ask about it.

Taste was really good, I would have given it 5 stars if it wasnt because they charged me extra just to put " a little bit of green salsa on my tacos" as I told the waitress. Never been to a place where they charge you extra for a tablespoon of salsa. I was very disappointed with this service. Please let the customer know they will charge extra if they want "a little salsa on their tacos". Another dollar or less, I would have been satisfied if you would at least tell me. Guacamole, extra sour cream and all that is common sense in many restaurants.

Sat for 20 minutes before being asked for a drink. Even after that, others were given their drinks and appetizers first, even though they just showed up. Then we received everything backwards. Entree first, then soup. Still wondering where our appetizer was, we were told it was still coming up only to find that it was never put in. The al pastor tacos and Jalisco soup were great, but I could not understand for the life of me how the service was so terrible. Honestly one of the worst dining experiences Ive ever had.

I have never had bad food here. Try all of the tacos! The cochinita are my personal favs, but Ive tried all of them and havent been disappointed. I would suggest starting with the sampler and working your way through the menu. Also of note is the sincronizdas and I really like the habanero guacamole. The service is good and the prices reasonable. It does get crowded on weekends and even the takeout orders might be turned away. But they do have a second location!

Awesome food, but service is horrible. Sat with empty drinks for a while and a pile of guac with no chips. Server finally asked if we wanted more chips and then never brought them. Once again food was great. Their servers really need to pay attention more. Theres only like 10 tables in the whole place.
