Oinkalicious! Fresh and artfully-combined local food, to be enjoyed on the neglected front patio where you can observe the passing parade of locals from Evanston, among whom many students and faculty from Northwestern. Their house-made chips (oregano, garlic, paprika, and just a hint of sweetness) go well with that first glass of wine from their extensive and deep wine-list (I didnt dare try the local wines, since they had a 2010 Russian River on hand). The chicken soup with wild fungi and kale was amazingly fresh and hot, and the duck breast was complex, rich, and just sweet enough, served atop polenta. (If you order the pork chop or the burger, itll be done in style by sous-chef Joe!) Top that off with a flight of creamy Wisconsin cheeses, and a second glass of that wine, and even a long drive (or ride on the el) will seem worth it. (If you do drive, watch out for the streets: many are one-way, poorly-signed, under construction – or all three.) #15bday

This is the fourth time that I have tried this place, the food was, at best, mediocre and the bartender was very young and clearly inexperienced. My cocktails were really bad, sent back two of them. The service has improved thank heavens as it was truly horrendous in the past. Way over priced and I wonder if the line cooks they use to assemble the recipes are supervised in any real way. I ordered the Tofu which I have had in the past and liked. This time it was almost cold and clearly had sat for some time before it was brought to the table. I have come to realize that the only thing that you can truly count on with this restaurant is its inconsistency in service and quality of food and drinks. I feel like I gave this a real shot as I like the philosophy of farm to table approach to eating. Truly not worth doing more here than beer and appetizers. But hey I am far more likely to go to Smileys Brewery on Oak St for that kind of entertainment.

When visiting an area, I gravitate towards farm to table places. Therefore, my evaluation might be a bit stringent. Ive been to some great spots! My recent trip to Evanston brought me to the Farmhouse. I was there at an in between time, 3pm on a Friday. They had a menu for this time period. The vegetarian burger sounded good and their house cider. I like a dry cider, so that worked, but the flavor is a little thin. Not bad, just not awesome. The burger was slow in coming, which was fine, I wasnt in a hurry. The rather thick bun was on the dry side, which I removed most after the first couple bites. The burger had a decent flavor but was very shmushy. The consistency more like hummus. The fries were fine, nothing special, but I really liked the homemade ketchup! The staff were very nice and the atmosphere pleasant. The price was high for what I received, though.

To begin with it was 5:30 Friday nite, inside the restaurant was fairly empty, but the waitresses stood around the front desk gabbing and took their time to come over and take our order. I ordered the pike and my friend ordered a burger. The fish came with a sprinkling of snap peas and some chopped tomatoes at $24. I asked for bread and was told that would be extra!. My friend asked to substitute the fries and she got a bowl of kale, which was not cut or chopped, just a long folded strip which wasnt easy to eat. I realize this is a hotel restaurant, but come on.... a boiled potato or some polenta, rice, etc with the fish.....and no bread for $24. The burger was only average and the service was awful. I would not recommend the place to anyone. There are so many better restaurants in Evanston.

The food here is pretty good and the interior is welcoming. They nailed the farmhouse style interior. I had the roasted chicken which was very good. My first time here the dine in experience was dulled a bit because of noisy kids with a family at a nearby table. The parents nor restaurant staff did anything about. Very annoying until I moved myself and my wife to a table further away. Went back for a second visit recently and was pretty disappointed. At 730pm on a Sunday they were out of a beer from a brewery literally down the street. Ok fine. Then I went to order the fried chicken and biscuit and they were out of that too. Ended up ordering the duck confit. It was good but the portion was far too small for the price. If youre into dining experiences with annoyances this place is for you.

Unspectacular place whose whole deal is "farm-to-table." Farm-to-table isnt supposed to mean mediocre food and drinks. We both got burgers because nothing else on the menu sounded edible. The burgers were dry, flavorless, and the bread somehow was soggy. I didnt realize that "dry-aged" meant, well, literally dry. The fries were probably the only good thing about that plate, but there were unfortunately not too many of those. Their cocktails are uninspired and forgettable. They didnt use simple syrup in one of our drinks (I forget what the drink was called and I cant find it on their horrible website), and the drink was grainy because of the sugar sitting at the bottom. It was expensive for what we had, and I dont think Ill ever return as there are better restaurants in Evanston.

My first visit to the recently opened Farmhouse was mixed. Sat at the bar for lunch expecting speedier service. Was the opposite. Had to draw someones attention for my drink order and food order. Sampled a local beer and ordered another. Got the Pasture raised "Classic" burger and it was okay. Nothing to write home about. Could benefit from extra toppings like cheese and/or bacon but those will cost you. Place was surprisingly packed for Monday lunchtime. Based on that alone it should prove to fair better than the previous two sushi joints in that space. Positive: excellent taplist of local beers. Negative: still ironing out the service issues. I will revisit next month and see where they stand.

The food and the drinks are nice, but not exceptional, and the location is convenient for those of us who work at NU to take our guests and visitors, but the service is terrible. I have had the experience , again and again, of being treated unnecessarily rudely. On a variety of occasions both hostess and waitresses kept rushing through our drinks if we were sitting at the bar or our food when we were having dinner, and were doing so in such a bossy and impolite manner that made us all feel unwelcome and unwanted, even when we had made significant orders. There are much better options in Downtown Evanston.

Theres a decent selection of craft beers, but dont expect any domestic or imported names. I recommend the crankshaft. You must try the cheese curds for an appetizer. They are delicious. I decided to give the fish and chips a try, only to be disappointed with the bland taste and gummy breading. Honestly the worst fish Ive ever had. The decor is quite nice and definitely gives you a homely feel. The food presentation was eye catching. Theyve achieved the farm ambiance, but need to work on their fish and chips. Oh, and you must try the bananas foster for dessert. It was amazingly good.
