Saw this place on with good ratings and 1 $. So I had to try it out. Let me tell you there is a reason why its rated the 4 stars. The establishment is very wallet friendly and food portions are generous. It has an old school cafeteria feel where you pick up a tray and tell the man what you want and its cooked fresh and fast and magically the food appears on the plate before yours ready to pay. This place is run like a well oiled machine. Here breakfast is served all day and there is everything from the typical steak and eggs to broasted chicken with grits and biscuits. Youd like some desserts? Well thats served here too. Just make sure that you order that while in line, and dont wait to the end like myself. I immediately regretted not picking up a dessert first, becase this place is BUSY!! As a Chicagoan, this is one of President Obamas eaterys. He even has is own menu! This is a must eatery stop when in Chicago!

I think that you have to know what to order at Valois. The first time that I went, I ordered toast and turkey sausage. The toast was burnt and the turkey sausage was undercooked and luke warm. But, I did see another diner who had a plate of scrambled eggs with cheese and grits that looked good. The second time I went I had baked chicken, rice, corn and peach cobbler. The chicken was very, very dry...overbaked. I asked them to heat up my peach cobbler, but it was cold. However, I did see another diner with steak and eggs w/hash browns that looked good. So many people rave about this place. Theyve got to have some good food. Unfortunately, I didnt get any on the days that I was came there to eat. But, the staff was friendly and fast. The orange juice was very good.

I have been visiting Valois for years, its a nice hidden gem for local jazz musicians, residents and law enforcement community. Its cash only and you can get breakfast along side of dinner all day. You order your food and before you blink its right there for you to take away, its like they have 1 person on each menu item! the price is right and the food is great. When I am in chicago I eat hear everyday no matter how far away I am staying. If you eat here you can actually stay on 53rd all day and take in the local shops, from Hyde Park Records, to Ribs and Bibs, to Harolds Chicken Shack. There is a movie theater on the corner and several other places to eat. If you are in the neighborhood then you have to stick around and just hang.

Valois is dope (thats slang commonly used by African-Americans for awesome) Great for breakfast. Neighborhood diner in Hyde Park. Everything at Valois is made to order. You walk in, grab a tray, put in your order and by the time you down the line getting ready to pay, your plate is basically waiting for you (unless you are ordering something like a steak). One of best things about the place is the Kool-Aid machine. Yes, they serve Kool-Aid. Food is really good here and most importantly CHEAP. Id recommend the French Toast and Hashbrowns. Only con is its cash only. Our POTUS loves the spot... so you should too.

Tl:dr; Go here its amazing! This is one of those hard to find places thats truly a gem. I knew I was in a great place because as I scanned the menu for what I wanted, and old lady shuffled by and before she got to the counter several employees shouted out to greet her and ask if she wanted the usual. I got a rueben sandwich and a cherry cobbler for ~10. It was a filling portion and delicious. I HIGHLY recommend this place for people who love old school restaurants. Staff was happy and helpful as well.

This place is legendary, and was even before Obama made it *really* well-known. The aesthetics have changed over the years (theyve definitely upgraded), but the food has stayed amazingly consistent. I almost always get breakfast here, and I can personally recommend the sausage & cheese omelet, the hash browns, and the biscuits. But ALL of the food here is great, whether its breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If youre in or near Hyde Park, check it out.

Cafeteria style restaurant. Very casual. Lot of space/tables for bigger group. You get your bang for your buck. Its nothing fancy but if you want to a full belly with a little bit of cash in your pocket then this isnt a bad place to try out. I got the Obamas special- Veggie Omelet that came with hash browns (you can choose grits instead), 2 pieces of toast (you can get biscuit instead) for around $6 bucks.

I thought this place was just over hyped before eating here and looking at the menu. I was exceptionally surprised after eating. I got the #1 on the "President Obamas Favorites" menu which was the N.Y. Steak and Eggs. The serving size was large and being a large person I still couldnt finish everything no matter how hard I tried. Great experience.

Overrated, overrated, overrated. Their breakfast is mediocre, and not nearly as cheap as it should be to justify the low quality and counter service. Go next door to Mellow Yellow for breakfast - their daily special blows Valois out of the water, and you dont have to pay for each cup of coffee. The only thing thats good about Valois is its fast.

Valois is the restaurant if you want a hearty, large portioned meals. The price range from $6 to 12 dollars, but the combos they offer are super sized. I had trouble finishing mine, so I had to take it home, which with the ten dollar meal I had two servings. The place is cash only but I think there is an ATM machine in the restaurant.

The place was okay. I had the chicken pot pie the crust was like stone but the inside was do-able. My friend had some pancakes which were yummy. Staff was nice except the man behind the register "Bill" his customer service still sucked big time. I think he forget how to talk to customers, no wonder their wasnt many in there.

Cheap, fast, and big are three words that describe a breakfast at Valois. It has a cafeteria-esque feel to it, but breakfast is made to order; just how you want it. You have to be ready to go when you get to the front of the line, but your meal will be hot and ready by the time youre paying at the end of the assembly line.

Another hyde park classic! This place has cafeteria written on the outside, but dont be fooled, almost all the food is cooked to order. The ordering is done at a counter. Order a ham sandwich here and they will bring out a huge beautifully home cooked ham and carve thick slices off as they assemble your sandwich.
