The space is gorgeously designed and felt warm and airy. One of my first immediate impression was that the assemblage of persons at The Promontory were collectively striking in diversity and appearance. I remarked to my friends that this is where all the beautiful people of Hyde Park decided to assemble on that Wednesday evening imbibing beautiful cocktails. Stopped in, without reservations, the first official day they were open around 730pm and it was packed. We waited about 45 minutes to be seated. The food is small plates in concept so large plates, small portions. :-) The roasted nuts, short ribs, soft shell crab were delicious. The spaghetti of the spaghetti and meatballs were salty, the meatballs were perfect. The sole was my favorite dish of the evening for its perfect execution of sole. Cooked to perfection and bathed in smooth fumet de poisson (fish broth). My friends favorite was the coq au vin. Roasted to perfection. Very pleased with the execution of their proteins. Good cocktails and easy to navigate menu based on spirit of choice. It was their first official day of opening so table numbers were still being learned by servers. It was kinda of fun to see food we didnt order appear near us as they tried to figure out the tables. All were good humored. The service was slow but friendly. We attributed it to the packed house coupled with first day newness. Understandable. It needs bicycle parking, though. :-)

Place is very nice but our waitress for some reason was very bothered that we did not order food and we only ordered drinks we ordered one round of drinks and she never came back.. We were thinking about reserving this place for an event as I am an NBC Comcast employee after the horriable service we received from their staff not only am I not reserving this place I will no longer come to this place ever again.. Very disgusted as I just moved to Hyde park Tower .. in Hyde park ... Very very disgusted ..The waitress did not give a name very very unprofessional.. when finally we got tired of waving her down a buddy of mine walked up to her and asked her for more drinks she replied by saying her shift was over .. did not even have commen courtesy to tell us that .. the party of 6 that came with me are all NBC employees and we all agreed that place was very nice has a warm feeling to it .. But poor service .. All I can say is if you dont like your job or hate your life or judge people on what they order its probably safe to say that you should probably look for a different profession.. Since she didnt give her name I will just put that her hair was red

Ive just read something that is very disturbing to me. My cousin and I attended a comedy show for my birthday when Muhammed, Deon Cole, and other local commedians performed. I know Muhammad personally but regardless, this girl who gets on the stage "promoting" her business I find out didnt pay the comedians. What a sad thing when we as an African American Community are already plagued with the notion that we as a group cannot work together. NO MATTER what the issues, there should be some kind of compromise that we the ticket holders SHOULD NOT have to learn about this through social media and in the streets. I will NO longer spend my money at a facility that allows this to happen. The promontory is basically all that we have on the south side and it wont be long before that is all done with. "Mrsstealyourwig" has no business ethic. There should be some public apology made to the fans because after all your establishment nor mrsstealyowig wouldnt have a pay check without us. You should also know that I tried to reach the promoter and sadly was unsuccessful and now you get the bad rap! Go figure!

My husband and I have been here a few times and its always a struggle. On our first visit we sat outside and had incredibly slow service (in an empty restaurant) and a socially awkward waiter who aggressively chucked water into some plants located behind the table next to us. Our next experience was equally as bizarre. Ready to give this joint another chance since our food was so great, I had made reservations To celebrate my husband matching into a residency program. When I called and asked to modify our reservation to an earlier time I told the hostess my name and the time of our reservation. When she didnt pull up any results under my name I apologized and said that I must have made them under my husbands, Brent. After searching, the hostess only reply was "well ok, Theresa, AKA Brent I found your reservation and we cant move up your party" and promptly hung up. Without a good bye. You really cant make this kind of stuff up... Save yourself the hassle from the rude staff and go over to A10 right down the street!

Ever since The Promontory opened, the boy and I have been jonesing to try in out. However, the vegetarian options (or shall I say, option -- singular) were a huge deterrent. Since that theyve increased veggie options to a grand total of TWO (veggie sandwich and roasted veggies), we decided to celebrate the boys birthday at The Promontory. Onward to the experience... The atmosphere is trendy. Theres an open kitchen, a bar, and plenty of seating. Theres also a music venue upstairs that we didnt get to check out. The food was delicious -- we got the veggie sandwich and po boy sandwich for entrees. The portions are large, and overall the food was good although I thought the sauce on my po boy was a little overwhelming. The baked Alaskan was a unique treat; there was alcoholic jelly on it, which added intense flavor to an otherwise sweet dessert. TL;DR - Not for vegetarians; trendy; good food

Been to the Promotory more than a dozen times, and three times in the last week (mostly to entertain visitors). The open fire cooking is the attraction, but the fire doesnt touch all, or even most, of their food. The food quality is very uneven. Sometimes the food is delicious, but Ive also been served stone cold and over cooked entrees that should have never left the kitchen. Food value can be low ($20 risotto made with what seems like frozen peas), and veggie options are limited. Stay away from their chicken, which is almost always overcooked. The short ribs are typically delicious. Best feature of this place is the outdoor covered seating, which is rare in Hyde Park. Service is typically slow, but generally friendly.

So here is the deal, DO NOT GO TO THE Promontory in Hyde Park. The owner is a complete jerk and serves poor quality food. We stated a concern about the food, flavorless chicken with feathers still on it. The "owner" was rude and stated that was our opinion on the flavor. He was aggressive when he approached us. He said this is my restaurant and we could leave -- so we left after we paid for food we did not eat. We will NEVER go again. There are some real issues that were underlying his tone. I am fed up with these microaggressions. I speak with my money! And your time will be limited in my neighborhood. I give you 18 months and we will see someone else in your space.

Wonderful option for hyde park. I really admire their attempt to cook food over a real wood fired skillet. Some dishes, particularly the small plates are real hits. I recommend the lamb burger as well. Not everything is always great, but I credit them for pushing off the beaten path with their menu. I love the matrix (or grid) style cocktail with rows corresponding to certain liquors and columns to styles of drinks. The cocktails are rotated frequently and excellent. Be forewarned that the design can make the restaurant loud, but you may appreciate the lively atmosphere depending on your style.
