The service was miserable. Just one unpleasant encounter with a surly and unhappy waitress can indelibly sully your reputation. The mousy brown long haired waitress with the elephantine attitude ruined our evening with her impatience and grotesque lack of sensitivity when one of our guests was having a minor medical issue (a minor partial onset seizure) . I will be back to speak with the manager tomorrow (little surprise that there is no phone number to contact them at) Brendan Sodikoff: shame on you for hiring someone with a temperament better suited for the DMV if not a Comcast Customer call center (no offense to Comcast) she clearly wanted to be elsewhere- anywhere but showing hospitality to your customers- and wanted to focus her unhappiness and powerlessness on your guests. Our poor mortified and embarrassed friend just wanted to leave after her shocking dressing down which is probably fortunate for your sour and sullen harpy because Ill be only too happy to make good on her bizarre and utterly unprovoked threat to get her manager lest the poor fellow take his head out of his elbow and situp at a *park bench* (!) in an outdoor patio where we were the ONLY remaining customers at eleven PM-- she SHOULD have offered to get an ice water like a decent human being (let alone a WAITRESS) but instead the witch opted to ride a power trip when she should have been offering help - appalling and disgusting and disturbing. Ive never seen such rudeness at a McDonalds. Youd be better off getting an In and Out Burger for one quarter the price without 1950s Catholic School nun from hell excuse of a waitress.

I usually wait for a few visits before writing a review... BUT.. the bad taste from my one Sunday Afternoon stop has me bewildered. Many times I have driven by the large painted sign advertising the micro-menu, so when I stopped in and was told that the signature burger was not available at 3:30pm while they change over ... I was put into shock. The staff offered a shake as the only menu option in token consolation. A G! D! burger shack... cinder block building with a service bar and simple seating has no room closing down a micro-menu for a change over seen in full menu restaurants. This encounter with inflated self-worth and egotism has me doubtful that I will ever taste this burger that has been so well received. - update: I did stop in and was actually served ... tasted like what I remember Wendys tasting like but 10 or 11 bucks for an OK cheeseburger that left me still hungry -I bet with a fry I would have been filled but that would have left me at $15 or so.

The NAME makes me DROOL....is this how cheeseburgers tasted in the roadtrip glory days of Americana my parents always spoke of? Simple menu, simple bar, but the excellence is in simplicity, and while it may cost a $1 or 2 more than many average burger joints, theyve never ONCE messed up my order, are always friendly, and I like the variety of fry sauces available to guests.....and the self-serve ice water :) They have nice, even if pricey cocktails, but no more than the rest of Wicker Park, and I have yet to try their shakes but I love their no-nonsense throwback approach....plus, most gourmet burger joints Ive been to have issues w/the concept of "well-done" but Small Cheval actually understands how to not food poison me, so they will share my meager wages as I can afford to share them! DEFINITELY go here for your Wicker Park burger bar needs!

Eh. Its not the same as the original. The bacon is definitely not the same delicious rendered belly youll find at Au, rather soggy, thin piece of disappointment. No fried eggs, fries can be hit and miss. The kitchen closes at random times because, F^%k You thats why. Being that this place is right around the corner from my house, Im now less inclined to visit as frequently as its former (and sorely missed) Roxies. The past varieties of slice toppings and sauce are gone for now beef, grease and french fries bring the droves of dopes willing to overpay and stand in line. I get it. I really do. Its either (A) a tiny project shack for the famous restauranteur or (B) the pizza wasnt paying the bills or (C) Mr. S needs to maintain Hogsalts artery clogging rep. Heres to hoping that small C turns around as fast as Roxies.

Visited on Labor Day weekend. Line was long (not out the door) but made it through in ~10 mins. I had the burger, wife had the cheeseburger... both were fantastic, definitely one of the best burgers in the city. Not sure why a previous poster mentioned the toppings couldnt be modified... we each ordered different toppings on our burgers. They also took a drink order while we waited in line & delivered a beer and a peach drink in line. Really appreciated that extra service! Relaxed outdoor vibe & great food (fries & shake were both good too). Obviously not a healthy choice, but very delicious & enjoyable. Will be back for sure!

I stopped here on a random day to get a bite to eat for my boyfriend for take out. Didnt think much of it while I was getting it, as I never actually heard of them before. As soon as I told my boyfriend that I spent about $13 for a burger and fries, he flipped, as were very frugal. However, as soon as he took a bite of the burger, he completely changed his mind. We had to go back for seconds and ate outside in the patio a few weeks later. I love that the menu is extremely simple, which most of the time means that a restaurant will really try to make the food extra special. Will be back!

That hit the spot! I had been craving a cheeseburger all week. Lucky thats what Small Cheval does and does well. Definitely get the house style and if you have room the fries. Ill get the milk shake next time as they looked tasty. Seating is limited, but turns over quickly. In the 45 minutes we were there the room went from standing room only to 1/2 empty to full again. I wouldnt necessarily consider the place kid friendly, but there were several small children (with their parents) and if you ask the kitchen will even make a kids size burger.

Burger done their way or the highway. House style cheeseburger or hamburger, no substitions. A few taps for beer, a few cocktails and milkshakes. Sauce bar has spicy ketchup and garlic aoli, both make the mediocre fries a little less boring. Burger is good, you do not get to choose how it is cooked, the only choice is whether you have cheese or not. Cheeseburger is 9.95 its a very good cheeseburger. Definitely recommend going here but would love to try the sister restaurant to get the fried egg on my burger!
