Lets start with the food. The food was ok, I like that they try new combinations and take risks, but I wasnt real impressed. Also over-priced. The service wasnt great. The waitress couldnt pronounce anything on the menu (including edamame) and really couldnt handle the workload - long waits. We saw the manager playing with an iPad that controlled the lighting system instead of helping out. Basically bad management overall, and Ive tried it a few times as its local, and have been consistently disappointed. Will never go back. Atmosphere. Well, the furniture and decorations arent to my taste (and look cheap and tacky), but thats not where they get the 1 star. The music...way too loud. We couldnt even talk to each other without screaming. We tried sitting inside and inside, it didnt matter. Even tried going back for lunch (instead of dinner and the club music was still horrible). Asked them to turn the music down and they refused. There are numerous sushi restaurants that are better in the area (Daruma in Hoffman Estates, Minami in Schaumburg, PL8 in Barrington). There are restaurants in the area that offer better food and service (D&J Bistro in Lake Zurich, Near in Barrington) and there are restaurants that offer a better "city like atmosphere" (Monterra - Algonquin). And all of those restaurants will beat Shakou in every category. My recommendation: Walk in, look at the menu. If the prices, decor, and loud club music dont initially scare you away - give it a try.

Without a doubt, the sushi at this restaurant is the worst I ever had. The sushi all tasted like the fish had been stored in lemon juice, which unfortunately is common among restaurants that try to mask the flavor of old fish. All of the sushi "leaked" on the plate, further suggesting something wasnt right with the fish. The only thing worse than the food was the service. The service was slow. It took at least 20 minutes to get menus, then another 20 minutes to get our drinks, and then another 40 minutes to get the four selections of sushi we ordered. When we finally got our food, two of the orders were wrong. The server just rolled her eyes and took it away. When she came back with the right order another 25 minutes later, never saying a word, just dropping the plates with a loud thump and a crappy attitude. To top everything off, I was sick for a day after eating something at this place. All of this for came at a high price, too. We found the prices almost twice those of sushi restaurants that are 100% better. Dont worry: We wont be back!

We try to support local businesses, but Shakou has made it so we wont be back. If you prioritize trendiness over good food and good service, then you will enjoy your time. We have eaten here a few times and have a story for each. First, despite having reservations for on Monday evening at 6PM, they tried to seat us in the sushi bar. Huh? It was my sons 11th birthday and there were four open tables in the dining area (where they finally sat us). This story is consistent with many others here. Second, we have had issues with the beef they have served each time weve been--one time it had too much gristle to chew and another time it was WAY overcooked. Finally, the sushi is mediocre to poor. Not only are the cuts too small, but they are served at the wrong temperature on a freezing cold plate. This is unlike any sushi Ive had during my 20+ visits to Japan.

I have always been impressed with the food and service at Shakou, but tonight they took customer service to a whole new level. My team thought we had booked a reservation, but it turned out that there was miscommunication and no one ever booked it. When I arrived, George was so kind and accommodating. I could tell immediately that he truly cared and wanted to do everything he could to make this work for us. Also, Seth was our server and he too went out of his way to make us feel welcome even though we had obviously complicated things for many staff members. This is the type of service that will keep me coming back and recommending Shakou Barrington to everyone I know! Thanks again George and Seth!!!

Worst customer service ever. Booked a table in the upstairs lounge and received a call confirming our "booth" was reserved. Arrived at the location and was told the upstairs lounge had a private gathering and I would not be seated there. They proceeded to sit me at the sushi bar, when I questioned the host (later found out it was the "short" owner with a big ego) about the booth I was informed they did not have any available and he just laughed. Why waste peoples time especially if they planned a night out without the kids and wanted to make it special. I will never go back to this or any one of its other locations

Take out telephone customer service is very lacking. Weve phoned in multiple orders over the past 6+ months and every time the employees who answer have a very arrogant tone. We called at 8:30 on a Sunday and she says " sorry the kitchen is closing in 10 minutes" - even though the website says "kitchen closes at 9pm". Dont like bean sprouts, too bad, youll get them anyway. Whatever it is, every time it has been a real turnoff. I guess when you dont own the place, then it really doesnt matter. Lastly, the voicemail recording when you first call will make your skin crawl.

The host staff was very rude. Although we arrived without a reservation on a Saturday night, we saw many open tables. They took us to the sushi bar, and when we asked for a real table, we we told that this was a table. When we asked for a different one, we were simply told no. Were eating elsewhere. Had they politely explained why the other empty tables were not available, I would have appreciated it and we might have decided to stay. As it is, I have no intention of returning.

Nice stylish decor, good vibes, the food is hit or miss. Tried the Tokyo Steak which was ok a bit chewy and not as tender I would of liked and Sapporo NY Strip which I sent back as it was tough. The sushi rolls were ok nothing to rave about. If ,re looking for great sushi I would recommend Bistro Wasabi in Hoffman Estates. (on a side note my friends had a run in with one of the short owners, they said he was rude and condescending I think hes got the Napoleon syndrome).

Loved the food, hated the noise. Although everyone in our party was very happy with the food, we couldnt talk to each other. The insistent noise became the dominant part of our experience. We even inquired about the upstairs, but apparently the music is just as loud there. Too bad - we dont expect to go back again. I dont understand why restaurants want to make it impossible for their diners to enjoy a conversation.

if i reviewed this last week, id give this 5 stars. after my experience today, i am very disappointed. my friends and i are 15 and when we walked in they asked if we wanted kids menus. when we sat down, the waitress was rude and acted like we were too young to eat at a restaurant. i come here all the time with my friends or my family and i always have a great time and amazing food. but this really was disappointing.
