I told the boyfriend I only wanted one main thing for my bday. An Asian birthday cake. If you havent had one before, i would highly recommend going to any Asian bakery and ordering yourself a cake just to try it. Its okay, you deserve a cake. Asian cakes are a lot less sweet than your traditional cake and is usually made with a light sponge cake. Also, the toppings is usually some kind of fruit with a whipped cream kind of frosting versus the heavier frosting. In fact, I was sad when I first saw my cake with the chocolate heart on it and not the traditional circular pattern of fruit until I was told to lift it. Yes, I like chocolate too, but not on an Asian cake. I chucked the chocolate disk to the side of the box and stared at the pretty pretty fruit-filled cake for a good minute or two. Oh, how it glistened. Five shiny stars because it was everything that I was wanting and so much more. Im not sure of the price, but it was the perfect size for two people. And by two people I mean, he got one slice and I got the remaining four. Score! Also, as another edible bonus, I was given some random pastries that the store sells including two of the cheese puffs (like Fogo de Chao), octopus bun, red bean and a green tea-looking bun. Even after being in the fridge for a few days it was still good. Good job Hippo House!

What you should expect walking into this bakery is a variety of stuffed breads, and a case full of pretty desserts. They have loaves of super fluffy white bread, and some steamed buns as well (both good) but their stuffed bread case is amazing. They have buns filled with curry, potatoes, red bean paste (fine and coarse!) hot dogs, cheese, just to name a few of their truly epic offering. Everything Ive tried was delicious, and buns are somewhere around 60 cents to a dollar each. Come in with 5 bucks and come out with a nice little variety of unique treats. Their case desserts are really delicious (and pretty) as well; the typical overdressed slices of strawberry cake and other Japanese staples abound.

Im not going to compare it to European-style baked goods because thats another category. For a Japanese bakery, this place is quite authentic. Its got the usual fluff and white softness, and it has heated drinks towards the back. I like the canned milk tea, which is hard to find nowadays. Basically, if you want to eat cute, fluffy treats, or even want to enjoy some very thick white bread, this is your place.

Ive tried a number of breads and pastries and enjoyed all of them. I honestly cant think of which is my favorite. The pastries that look like buns stay fresh a couple days, even the pear danish was superb days later. Im not Japanese but the sweet bread reminds me of my cultures traditional bun cake. Happy to have found a replacement bakery!

I wasnt a big fan of this store and have never thought about giving it a try because of its reputations from my friends. But I did give it a shot and yes, it was good. I liked their goods and it wasnt that expenive. I may come here for occaional treats especially when I get lazy and dont feel like baking
