I rarely find myself in Wilton Manors but I so intrigued that this afternoon I headed over with my daughter to see if the Alchemist lived up to its hype. Its tucked in at the back end of a street so its not visible from the well traveled Dixie Highway. When I arrived what struck me immediately was the paucity of parking. One small lot serves three restaurants. The valet instructed me to back into a sort of spot. Backing in is not in my wheelhouse of skills so I was somewhat nervous but he successfully guided me in. After the nerve racking parking was in hand we moved on to the restaurant. You pass through a garden filled with rusty decorations, orchids, bird cages, chandeliers in trees, and wooden picnic tables to arrive at the order counter/ indoor seating. I would describe the atmosphere as shabby chic and my daughter declared it a hipster heaven. The lady who took my order was exceedingly nice. We settled on three slicers: turkey, Caprese, and Nutella. I also ordered the iced coffee. That along with a coke came to $28. Slicer is Alchemist speak for we are cheating you out of the top slice of bread for your sandwich. This is a pity because that bread was amazing. It was chewy, soft, and so flavorful. I could have eaten a loaf. The actual slicer itself was quite small. I cut them in half so we could taste each one. The Caprese was very fresh, I heard the staff tell someone that the restaurant grows all of the vegetables that they serve. The turkey was good but nothing about it really stood out to me. It is kind of hard to mess up a turkey sandwich unless you are an elementary school cafeteria. The Nutella slicer was filled with strawberries and bananas. Bananas are not my thing so I let my daughter have the majority and she loved it. I did try a bit with the strawberry. The berries were sweet and again that bread was a star. The iced coffee was delicious. I was a little worried when I inhaled that horrible burning smell coming from that roasting contraption by the front. I liked how the coffee had ice cubes made of coffee so the drink did not get watered down as the ice melted. After lunch we took a stroll around the rest of the area. Next door to the Alchemist is a French and Mexican restaurant as well as little stores and tables selling shoes, antiques, tea, clothing, and jewelry. This was definitely an interesting place to visit. I love eating at new and unique places and the Alchemist certainly fit the bill. My daughter wants to come back with her girlfriend.

The answer of the young lady behind the counter to the question " What kind of coffee are you brewing" was: Ruanda Ruanda is a country in Africa,.., was my answer "With all the respect, is this pure arabica, is a blend of arabica and robusta, if yes which ratio,.., is this a dark, a medium or a light roast. I did not asked about the roasting profile,..!(that would be to much) "I told you , Is Ruanda" came the answer,.. Than I have got one of my most shocking experience of my life The girnder was not set for fine grinding, she did not tampered the coffee at all (not with 24 kilograms of pressing force)and got a (ordered an espresso)a pale/thin , grey/brow liquid tasting very bitter and acidic. As result of letting flow hot water on burned coffee been debris. I have suggested, in a polite way (no other customer could hear my opinion,..) to switch to another roaster, because this one is garbage. Ok, thats it, product is dramatic, but than came the "service" I have parked on a non marked spot, but not in anybodys way, not in the gate,.., than a waiter asked me about the car. I replyed," thats mine and I am leaving right now Sir" "Next time I will let it toed" was the reaction of the "server", the one whos attitude was considerable worse than their "coffee" I appologize for my poor English, I am an Italian Immigrant , just arrived in your Great country. I have spent the last forty years of my life roasting coffee, I am 57. I have educated hundreds of young kids about the processing(harvesting, washing, drying, handling of the beens from the basics of roasting to the final exam required to get titel of "Torefattore" Even the less talented one, who became later on an electrician, made a considerable first roast of his life. Im incredibly sad to write this review as Ive been going to the Alchemist for a few years now, but sadly, Sunday was my last trip there. I had just proposed to my fiance the evening before and wanted to bring her family, who came from out of town, to this place to celebrate the next the following morning. They were busy and the food and drinks took time, which is understandable. Whats not acceptable is having the "manager," Anjo Molina, give attitude towards asking if they had forgotten about our order (they did). After bringing out the food, the manager came over and continued to give attitude towards me and my family. After being disgusted by this attitude, we decided to take the food and leave. As I was walking out to the parking lot, the "manager" continued to follow me and provoked confrontation, putting his disgusting hands on my fiance trying to grab the food out of her hand. The owner of the property finally came out and refunded my meal, but only because they knew their "manager was entirely out of hand and out of control. The Alchemist used to be a reputable place with decent managerial staff, but with a manager change, this place is no longer what it used to be. Ive never been followed out to the parking lot by a person so low and awful before. If you go there, make sure you dont expect your food on time or to not be harassed by the staff.

It was delicious! Our order was 1 avocado and 1 shrimp salad SLICER (toast with toppings) 1 Bulletproof coffee and 1 Alchemist Cold Brew Iced Coffee BLACK $24 First time trying Bulletproof, which is hot coffee with grass fed cow ghee (clarified butter) and coconut oil. The idea is that the caffeine binds with the fat and delivers a gradual all day caffeine buzz, not an all at once release buzz like regular coffee with sugar gives you! Very technical ;) Loved it! The iced coffee was gritty but decent. Tasted like licking a coffee bean which is fine with me, I like strong. *********FYI********** The power in the building is out! Operating out of a food truck!! An employee told us the power has been out for weeks and the two cafes that operate from there are shut down and up to 50 employees had to be let go. They are improvising by serving out of a food truck. You make your order from the truck and they give you a number and bring it to you when its ready. This was different than what we were expecting, but I wouldnt say it was much of a drawback or inconvenience. It was still delicious food and coffee in a lovely shaded outdoor atmosphere, great lil sunday funday stop off. Check em out! Check the weather! We got soaked sitting under an umbrella!

I accidentally stumbled upon this gem a few weeks ago when I made a wrong turn, but it was, in the end, the right turn. Ive been coming here for the past few weeks and I could not say enough wonderful things about The Alchemist. First, the atmosphere. Its beautiful, well maintained, interesting and inviting. Its fresh, its natural, its warm and its homey. I feel at ease. With this comes a similar and fitting crowd, everyone is patient and easy going and communal. Second, the staff. They truly care and they work hard as though they are all the owners of the establishment. Knowledgeable doesnt begin to describe them, and their recommendations are never wrong. Third, quality. Everything on this menu is well thought out and fresh. The food is made to order and the drinks are hand crafted! Lastly, and most importantly, the owner. She is the sweetest thing here, and Ive had their hot chocolate! She exudes what the Alchemist is, and it radiates through her and the rest of the staff and the entire establishment. I wont go anywhere else, because THIS is home.
