If you want decent Japanese food, esp. sushi, DONT waste your money here; go somewhere else, maybe Kaisen. Matoi is a Korean restaurant that has lousy sushi, and lousy Korean food. Theyre all hype. The decor is nice, but thats the only positive. The staff is friendly until you complain about something; then they get defensive and rude. Being a life long Japanese food enthusiast I have high expectations, but Ive learned not to expect too much from the hype. I am tolerant of mediocre restaurants in general as long as they have OK food, is reasonably priced, and most importantly, if the staff is friendly and makes your overall dining experience enjoyable. I only complain if both the food AND the service are truly awful. I am not a total purist when it comes to sushi, but I am not a big fan of specialty rolls that are smothered w/ thick, sweet and spicy sauces, mayo, or cream cheese b/c not only do they mask and ruin the delicate flavor of fresh fish, they also disguise the deteriorating taste and odors of fish that is about to spoil. One cant be too careful about eating raw seafood these days, esp. in sushi restaurants where the sushi chefs are NOT properly trained/certified sushi chefs, but just any Asian or Asian looking guy dressed up as a sushi chef. But anyway, Matoi has bad sushi, bad service. definitely NOT the best sushi in Tampa - its all advertising hype.

Based all the good reviews, I decided to try this place again. I came here 3 years ago to try the BBQ and thought it was average at best. Compared to their competitor not far from them, it was way overpriced and not prepared as well. Okay back to my most recent visit. I thought Id try their sushi based on the rave reviews. I ordered two specialty rolls that were very different on paper. But they tasted the same. And honestly, Ive purchased sushi from supermarkets that have tasted better. Service was horrible, there were only a handful of booths that were occupied. After sitting down for 10 minutes, I had to waive down the hostess so I could place my order. I also ordered from the bbq menu, and although it was flavorful, it was still lacking. And the side dishes were not fresh. The kimchi was disgusting. I enjoy good food and will happily shell out my hard earned dollars to have good food. Ive tasted fresher and better sushi at a sushi buffet! ... at a lesser price! To those people that have said that this place has the "best sushi in Tampa," I must say to you.... You have no IDEA what you are talking about! You dont know what you are missing if you think this is the best! Thats laughable!

Matoi Sushi is exactly the kind of sushi spot Sushi-lovers love. With a variety of choices, delectable entrees, and powerhouse appetizers, this restaurant offers more than just well-made Asian cuisine. The atmosphere is pleasant, controlled, well-lit, and always open to incoming customers. Of the eateries on Dale Mabry, this one usually stays up later -- until 10pm on the weekdays, midnight on the weekends -- and it offers incredibly tasty food. Its upstanding at all times, and the staff is extremely courteous and quick, and usually pretty funny too. There are T.V.s scattered around, soft pleasant music playing, and a several booths along the wall with open seating in the middle. They offer a private room as well for large groups. Yes, they also serve Sake and beer with deals for happy hour and late night. Suggestions from the menu: Ginger Salad, Tuna Bomb, Matoi Roll, New Tampa Roll

i called the other day to ask a question about their menu and pricing. when i asked to speak to a manager, i was treated as if i was the scum of the earth. she first replied by saying he wasnt in and when i started to ask when would be a better time to call back she snapped back saying she was very busy and no time for me then hung up. mind you this was at 3 o clock on a wednesday and i have worked in the restaurant industry for years and no one is ever THAT busy at 3. even if on the off chance i caught her at a bad time, no one should ever treat a customer with such disrespect. needless to say i will NEVER go back there and after reading some of the previous complaints, neither should anyone else. find a sushi place where the service and staff is at least 1 1/2 stars worthy.

Went here last night for sushi. The prices are pretty decent, the food was great - Miso Soup - tasty, perfectly salted and not watery - Red Dragon Roll - HOT. I had to drink two glasses of water with this, but it was delicious. - Heart breaker Roll - This was a pleasant surprise since I didnt think seared salmon in a roll would be good. Hands down one of the best "cooked" sushi rolls Ive had - Shrimp Fried Rice: the kids loved this dish, a very large plate so two people can easily eat this. They werent stingy with veggies or shrimp Ambiance: The ambiance is nice, very authentic looking, not very formal. Service: so-so, there is a buzzer on the table to ask for the waitress, but ours wasnt working, so we had to try to get her attention several times.

Matoi Sushi is a great spot for dinner and they are one of the few places that is open past 10pm on a weeknight. Upon arriving, you are immediately immersed in a lavishly-decorated Korean dining room. It is very spacious and is perfect for date night or they can accommodate a big party in one of their rooms in back. The menu is chocked full of different sushi combinations and the staff there is always friendly. Our server, Cha, did a great job with our small party and made sure we had what we needed. Whenever someone wants sushi, I always recommend this place. They are also conveniently located a short distance off of I-275, so travel there is easy. Ill definitely return to Matoi Sushi for a late dinner again!

Ill be back, for sure... From the outside it doesnt look like much but inside is definitely more welcoming. It is always a good sign to see other people from Asian backgrounds eating in an Asian restaurant. I think the majority of the clientele was Asian. But like I said, that is a good thing. We were given a table immediately. The server was fun, and joked with us about our use of the chopsticks. Our food and our sushi was fresh and tasty! It was cooked and prepared perfectly. I only tried the one roll, Sexy Mama Roll which, being shrimp tempura, pineapple and something else, I know isnt technically sushi, but still, very good food and at a very reasonable price. Im looking forward to trying more!!
