After seeing this restaurant featured on a PBS special, my husband and I were very excited to try it. After several months we finally made our way there. The atmosphere was so so, but our waitress was very nice and made several recommendations. My husband had the Frita, which was okay, along with beans and rice which were good. I had the Chicken Cilantro wrap, which had an excellent flavor, as well as corn chowder. Everything was fine until I bit down on something extremely hard in my wrap. I thought I had broken a tooth until removing it and discovering it was some kind of very hard black material. The owner came over and I let her know what happened. She gave me a funny look and said she would show it to the cook, then walked away. After about 15 minutes she came back and informed me that it didnt come from her kitchen and she didnt know what it was or where it had come from. I was completely shocked. Not only was her apology completely insincere, but her total lack of concern and blatant insinuation were quite offensive. Our waitress was more apologetic than the owner, and seemed quite embarassed by the situation. We paid for our lunch and promptly left. The food was very tasty, but the owners complete lack of professionalism and insultful behavior was unacceptable. I refuse to support someone like that. As a side note, I fully expect this review to be filtered or removed. Urbanspoon took it off their site. There really is no free speech anymore!

Short but outstanding menu. We were amazed at how good every dish was. A must-visit restaurant. At first glance this place might get lost among the more popular (tourist) spots, such as A1A Ale House (which is a good place, by the way). It sits in a small alley right behind A1A Ale House. And while the menu is small, the taste is big. The brisket sandwiches were amazing. My wife, my friend, and I all had the same eye-popping reaction when we took our first bite. Keep in mind -- were all from Texas, where BBQ, Beef, and Brisket can be had a thousand different ways. But weve never had beef that tasted like this before. Simply AMAZING! The fish soup was also outstanding -- everything was fresh and tasty (many places have soup that sits around all day and the fish, chicken, or other protein will turn to rubber or shoe leather -- but not at this place).

My father and I ate was the Tomato Bisque, bread and Sweet Tea to drink. The bisque was spicy hot and okay. Keep eating the bread with this one if your tolerance for spicy heat gets to you a little. The sweet tea was refreshing and some of the best I had on our trip. I have copied and improved the Tomato Bisque since I returned home. It is a tourist spot, slightly overpriced for what you get. I was really very put off when a lawyer came in to discuss a court case with the cook, who looked like a tattooed ex-con. They sat close enough to be heard. Not the ideal situation for us on holiday. On another note, if you are going to see the Spanish Medical Museum across the street, be careful, they treat it as a School for you to be captured and held until they are finished with you.

It was very busy, which is wonderful. However we sat down at a dirty table and then watched two other tables seat themselves as well. The staff eventually assisted the two other tables and got them drinks. They cleared an empty table that emptied after we arrived. Both staff members looked directly at me. We waited 22 minutes before finally getting up and leaving. We were in no rush and understand it was busy, but why would you clean empty dirty tables before clearing the one we sat at and offering us a drink? I just wanted some Cuban coffee!

Heard I had to stop here for a Cuban while Im in town so my son and I swung downtown for lunch. Service was great, place was super cute. Had a sangria at a table out on Aviles while we waited and really enjoyed it. The Cuban was really good. The pork was tender, and the sandwich was pressed perfectly. Plantains were fantastic. Also grabbed a couple empanadas and some black beans, both of which were tasty. The only thing that could have made the lunch better would be deviled crab! Enjoyed our lunch, though, and well definitely be back.

My wife and I ate here on a Friday evening around 6:30. We were tired from the drive from New Orleans, and this quiet little cafe was great. The waiter was helpful in making our selections. The ceviche was refreshing. Not a big selection (particularly of beer or wine, just fyi), but our meal was *very* well done. *I love real food!* Very pleased with the service as well. Also, this is a beautiful little street. Check out an art gallery after dinner :-)

If you are into a strong real latino cup of coffer come in and ask for a cortadito con leche and be ready to enjoy the cafiene rush our if you are like us, feel like you are home. Had the best Choripan that I can think of anywhere else in Florida including Miami or Puerto Rico. After spending a weekend in ST Augustine we were ready for a spanish home style breakfast and La Herencia Cafe was a perfect choice for a home cooked meal away from home.

I was really in the mood for a Cuban sandwich. When it arrived it was full of gristle which I wouldnt feed to my dog. About half the sandwich was like that. I set those inedible portions of the meat aside on my plate. We waited a long time for the waitress to come back to our table and I told her about it, showing her the meat and she simply said, "Im sorry about that" and did nothing. I couldnt believe it! Ill never eat there again.

Excellent food, excellent service. One of the restaurants that survived the hurricane and Im glad they did! My father had roast pork with beans and rice and said it was excellent. My mother loved her empanadas. I had chicken pesto with yuca fries (AMAZING!!!!!). Service was excellent and personalized. We had a wonderful experience and will absolutely be back. We are all local to St. Augustine and glad this restaurant made it!

We were in St. Augustine vacationing with family including my retired parents and my children who range in age from 11-18 years. We found this little restaurant quite by accident and went in for lunch. There was something for everyone on the menu. The food was wonderful, the service was friendly and fast, and the atmosphere was relaxing and cool on a hot July day. It was some of the best food we ate in St. Augustine! Loved it!

I hate even having to leave one star for this place. food is no where near authentic. anyone that says this food is good is lying or being paid. I had the roasted pork with beans and rice. pork was cold and hard to cut. anyone whos had roasted pork knows it should fall apart. beans are canned and rice was sticky. definately not a $13 dish. do not eat here. pollo tropical makes a five star dish compared to this place.

After eating there I wasnt surprised we had no problem getting a table after failing at numerous restaurants in Downtown St Augustine. The other restaurants were booked. Disappointed with the taste and quantity of the food. First time going to a Cuban restaurant where the portions were so small. First time and last time at this location. Natalie our server was pleasant.
