Mamak (pronounced mah-mahk) is a dazzling change in the mode of trendy new casual restaurants popping up in urban Malaysia, with blond wood, green uplighting, a fascinating rope ceiling, and a striking communal table for 20 with yellow metal chairs bisecting the room. It’s interesting to see what has changed in the area during several generations of Asian immigrants, from conventional eateries to the recent wave of fashionably hip hotspots like global tapas bar Kasa and the Asian Latin fusion of Tako Cheena. They meld traditional food with exotic combinations and unfamiliar new offerings, and are attracting a young crowd (and young employees) along with culinary adventurers. Read the menu and be exposed to a whole new vocabulary: pasembur, a sweet potato gravy served on crispy tofu; gwa bao, a soft steamed bun filled with duck or pork; sambal, a fiery Asian salsa. Asam kari is a spiced coconut curry sauce flavored with sour tamarind and vegetables and served with shrimp, fish (the best choice) or squid. Coconut kari is a Malay dish with the same Persian roots as Thai massaman curry, cooking chicken or beef in a savory reddish yellow gravy with potatoes. The wonton with hot sauce is a stunning little dish of steamed chicken and shrimp dumplings coated in a dark roasted peanut sauce, chili oil and a generous helping of sesame seeds, with a rich, nutty taste, good texture and pleasantly spicy finish. I would buy the sauce by the jar. Seafood haw fun adds stir-fried wide rice noodles, smoky charred from a hot wok, with seafood and sliced fish paste cake. The dish is the closest thing here to Chinese-American restaurant food, and a good introduction for the new-food wary.

We ordered six dishes, they were all average. The roti canai came with one small roti bread, the sauce was thin and average taste. The char kuey teow was average, lacked a wok seared flavor and the flavor and freshness didnt pop. They kept bringing out the next dish and it just kept disappointing. We have eaten these dishes elsewhere and these were not comparable in my opinion. Average quality and taste, I wont go back. I really wanted to enjoy this meal.

There is nothing that covers the bare cement walls or ceiling, so the place was deafening with echos and reverberation of people trying to talk over the endless noise. I left with a headache. The food was good, portion size lacking for the price. Youre better off going across the street to Tasty Wok at the corner, then finish at the bakery in the store next door. Just as good food at a much better value without the deafening roar of just 15 people talking.

I ordered pick up through their third party website. Everything went smooth, ready early, friendly service. Thats all great but the food was flavorless. I ordered the pad thai. Its a shame because Ive heard good things, it may just be that this place doesnt do that dish well. Rice noodles lacked sauce and tasted bland, almost like I wasnt eating anything! Weird. Good atmosphere from what I experienced. Will be getting my food from somewhere else though!

Aesthetically appealling but the noise is overwhelming. The best menu item we had was the beef lettuce wraps. The spring rolls were mushy inside and the chicken satay seemed to be cooked with the skin on. The peanut sauce did not resemble a traditional suce. The sauce srrved with the cream cheese rangoon seemed to have garlic in it which overwhelmed the taste and please be carefull...they are served at a temp that is nuclear hot and I burnt my mouth.

Ohhhh my, I didnt look at the pricing as I was there to try new things. The food was served quickly. Portions werent intimidating, they were actually the perfect amount of absolute deliciousness. I had the ?? Mee, an egg noodle with shrimp n other meats n veggies smothered in a scrumptious brown sauce. I will go back and definitely introduce another group of friends to this restaurant. The lay out and decor were interesting, simple and open.

After living in Indonesia Im always on the lookout for authentic indonesian cuisine. It is really hard to find. Yes, the Nasi Goreng is authentic, Id say Sumatra style, with the fried shallots on top and especially their homemade sambal. My complements to the chef. Ambiance is obviously the work of a very clever interior designer. Nice work. Service is great, and music is modern pop/rock, not too loud. ill be back.

Pricey, decent food, great service. first time at the restaurant, its like Hawkers but with less food. The place is definitely nice looking, but the food was hit or miss. Some were very flavorful and delicious while others are just dull and bland. Best dishes are the five spice fish, pork belly bao, and Yangzhou fried rice. Would recommend going to Hawkers over Mamak.

One of my favorite restaurant in Orlando. We accidentally found this restaurant while driving down Colonial. Its very similar to Hawkers but I prefer this place. The Roti Canai is a must as your appetizer! If you like noodles, I highly recommend getting the Char Kway Teow dish, its so gooood! Im a big Roast Duck fan, their duck is amazing as well.

Tasty food, fair prices, decent service, and a very clean restaurant. I highly recommend trying the wanton appetizer that comes in the peanut butter sauce and also the pan fried noodles. Another plus is our server was very attractive, so all in all a good experience. Will return again, if not for the waitress then definitely for the wantons.

The decoration of the restaurant is awesome and the service is good. Our server was Robert. I would not go back, its cheap food served at a "nice place." I ordered the mojitos, which came with old and brownish mint (maybe they are on a budget and cant afford fresh mint) and it was made with sprite *disgusting* might as well serve cool aid.

One of Orlandos hidden little treasures. Mamak packs big Southeast Asian flavors on little plates. Between its unassuming location, comfortable modern-minimalist decor and layers of flavor, Mamaks my current fave for a casual bite. Ive tried thirteen dishes on the menu and each has been the best twist on the dish, Ive had to date.

If you are a Malaysian and craving for some malaysian comfort food or hawkers local dish. This is the place to be. The roti canai is crispy just like the original mamak roti, the char teow kueh and many more. Do not go RASA.... totally not malaysian as claimed. Robert is our server. He is the best. He knows the menu so well.

Pros: Their food is great. Its very nice place! Cons: All voices bounces from one side to another. It is deafening. It is so loud that I got a headache! You can barely hear anyone! Despite the food being good, it is all small portion. You are looking at 5 to 9 dollars for food that is the size of your hands.

Good Malaysian food. Decent veggie choices but the place is always packed. Nice trendy location and ambience. Singapore noodles are awesome. Ask them to make it spicy. Drink choices could be more. Good friendly staff and service. Parking can be a nightmare but find another nearby store or off street parking.

The taste is like going on a trip to food euphoria. For a first time visit we chose the Roast Duck Bao & Spring rolls. Outstanding burst of flavor from the cucumber inwhich the taste buds were not expecting. Thumbs up x 4 .Bartender a little cranky I guess due to rush@ 9pm Saturday night . Otherwise perfect
