Serious charges of DISCRIMINATION AND ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR BY JOSEPH towards womens of Indian nationality. Joseph claims to be the owner. I am an Indian and I have been going to Utsav for last 4 years very frequently!!! I am a Professor at University of Connecticut and along with my colleagues, we just love the food at Utsav. Today 8/29/14-Friday, I decided to have dinner at Utsav with my wife. It was very busy, but while we were eating, my sister with her husband and two year old daughter also came. I asked them to join my table after informing the waiter. While we all were eating, we requested a waiter to bring a spoon. It took them a while, so when I saw Joseph, I asked him to bring us a spoon. He said, one minute..... We kept waiting, and after some time, I requested again. Thats when it took ugly turn. Joseph started pointing fingers at me and my sister and started behaving very rudely. I was SHOCKED as we all have been going there for years. I could not stop myself and told him to behave. To my shock, he started MISBEHAVING with me. So I requested him to talk politely, but he did not stop. I asked him for the owners number, but he said he is the owner. Finally, my wife went and requested him to treat us with RESPECT, but even that did not stop him from raising fingers and he started SHOUTING at her. He was loud, rude, and asked gee to leave. He did not even wanted to listen to our complaint. We left very embarrassed and humiliated. Despite its good food, we wont go back to Utsav. My sister had often complained that JOSEPH does not treat Indians well, but I finally witnessed it. She told me that Joseph behaved well only because I went there with my colleagues (non-Indians). So she was right!! Its been over 12 years in US and I have never been treated like this. Whats shocking was JOSEPH did not even spare my wife and my sister. Visited August 2014

This restaurant deserves a negative star! Never have I been so insulted. A couple of Indian coworker recommended this place so I decided to give a a try. The moment I step in with a friend, it was clear that we were not welcomed. I guess you have to be white or Indian to be considered worthy of this place. We were just ignored by the waiting staffs. After a few minutes, I asked if theres a table for two. a waiter just grunted something intelligible. That repeated with another waiter. Not one of them greeted us. Then, someone came out and without saying a word, took us to the empty side of the restaurant and showed us the smaller table there is -- all 2 square foot big and then walked off without a word. There were plenty of tables around. I saw several white folks came in and they were treated in a much more civil way. I started to get the picture. We are not welcomed. Seeing I could not even fit in the table and there are 5 or 6 bigger ones around, I asked if I could get another table. The "host" basically yelled! Yelled "this is your table" and thats it. So I walk out in disgust. When I spread the words in my office; another Asian coworker told me he and his wife had a similar experience at the same place! Avoid this hell hole at all cost. Boycott it!

Ive been twice now. Once for the buffet and once for dinner. Their dishes are unique. Ive had the same food at other Indian restaurants and it looks completely different at Utsav. Ive enjoyed everything Ive had there. The lunch weekday buffet is a bit limited. The day that I went, there was an appetizer, one chicken dish,, one lamb dish and about 4 or 5 vegetarian dishes, plus dessert and the salad bar. Im not a fan of lamb, so that left me with only one meat dish to try. Everything on it was wonderful, though. Fresh tandoori chicken is delivered to the table along with naan. They had a rush when I entered, so mine didnt arrive until half way through the meal. I was full and only ate one piece of chicken. They would not allow me to take the other piece home. Strange policy. I can see if I had a plateful of buffet food, but tandoori personally cooked and brought to the table? Such a waste of food. I would definitely go again. It is a more expensive Indian restaurant, but worth every penny. Buffet will cost $9.95 during the week, $12.95 on the weekend, ad most dinner dishes are around $15.

We went to that restaurant after quite a while. I must say the kind of treatment given to indians vs. non indians is enormous. We went there today with our 4 old kid and were given a seat somewhere in the corner. we were not even served water nor offered menus. After us a american couple walked in and was immediately given attention to them with orders being taken and food was ready within 5 min. Our kid was starving and when asked for food the so called manager stated its busy and never showed up. The kind off attitude shown was highly intimidating. We waited for 5 more minutes just went to the front desk, cancelled our order and walked out. Never again will recommend any of fellow indians to visit that place of the rudeness shown by the staff. They need to realize that they are not giving anything for free but we are paying for the food and expect courtesy. Also, should they not forget that they are indians too and cannot compare themselves to caucasians. ridiculous. I will be writing up on this on every site online about this.

I went to the restaurant seeing all the positive reviews, but was my experience was contrary. No wonder why most of the good reviews are given by non-indians. The food is ordinary.. nothing exceptional to quote. The dosa ordered was hardly warm when arrived. We just asked the waiter to reheat it. He called the manager, who was extremely blunt and refused to reheat. Then he offered to cancel the item, we agreed and the waiter took away the dosa. I signed the credit card agreement bill (minus the dosa price) while paying the bill. But after 2-3 days when credit card charge was posted, it included the dosa price. I couldnt do anything as I did had the customer copy of it. Only thing we liked is the very fine stands of carrots cuts that came along with tandoors. Never again..

YUM! Utsav used to be owned by someone else and was terrible. The new owners have nailed it though! Great buffet, especially on the weekends, and they have a frequent visitor card that after 5 visits your 6th is free! The staff is very attentive and even bring me extra spicy sauce if I ask. But if you are spice-phobic, most of the stuff on the buffet can satisfy the bland Yankee palate. Beyond the buffet, try their spicy soup...YUMMY!! With the buffet, you get sizzling chicken tandoori and fresh naan brought to your table. Great prices on the buffet and reasonable/average for takeout. In all honesty, one of the few restaurants in Vernon that is worth frequenting. Do yourself a favor and indulge!! You wont be sorry!
