There are few places I can say are worthy of mention and Great Wall Chinese Food is one of them. Having been a long day and a building up quite an appetite I decided to breach the Great Wall and try something new. I walked in and at first glance I thought I had walking through the wrong door as it initially appeared to be a butcher shop. I walked out looked at the sign and figured I was in the right place. I re-entered and was greeted with a fish tank on the trash receptacles. In the corner was a sleeping cook with his hands on his face sweating profusely. When he noticed me he quickly jumped up and started to stir the entrees. Like a magic trick the dull colored, dry looking shark bait magically transformed into a visually appealing food of magnificence, not really, nice try though. My mind was telling me no don’t do it, but my stomach won the debate. I decided to take my chances with the Chow Mein, spicy chicken, and teriyaki chicken. The kind gentleman offered teriyaki sauce on my chow Mein and so I accepted hoping to be whisked away to the magical land of tastiness. At the register I was greeted by an older woman that was pleasant who offered me a drink, I looked over at the soda dispenser behind her and voted not a good idea. The machine looked like it was aged to perfection in an antique store and shipped directly to them, not sure how I would request a filth free beverage so I simply opted out of the aspartame filled liquid. Instead I figured I would give the egg rolls a go, they looked like swisher sweet cigars but with the consistency of an almond cookie; hey who am I to judge I’ll give it a try before I do. I asked for water as a precaution and am still thanking Jesus for having enlightened me with perhaps the only good decision of the experience. I took my tray and looked out to the seating area a large array of orange tables spread out next to outdoor potted plants. They glistened like a bus of overweight people consumed the store and left behind the fruits of their labor. I found the most enchanting sweat free table in the corner and began to experiment. I quickly realized I was going to need reinforcements and asked for sweet and sour sauce. What I got was an orange beverage with the consistency of Gatorade, but again I will hold my judgment until after I try. Here it is, the moment of truth, I take the egg roll and dip it in the sauce moving it slowly to my mouth in anticipation I bite……. WTF! The sauce poured off the egg roll like a leaky faucet and upon biting the roll o fun it shattered into pieces like a baseball going through a sliding glass door. Why has thou forsaken me, I sought refuge in the teriyaki chicken; Christ almighty I feed my animals better, the taste was literally how a can of wet puppy goodness smells as you crack open the can feeding man’s best friend. I quickly escaped to the spicy chicken, thank you Jesus, thank you Almighty to all that is good in this world, I found salvation! The jalapenos saved me, normally I hate spicy but this time it was my green savior. I thought fast and quickly added the jalapenos to the teriyaki chicken and ta da, like a Houdini trick I magically made the chicken edible. It danced down my throat like a sugar plum fairy and I danced in a fit of joy! Washing this filth down with crisp clean water from their tap it was time to depart. I must say the food was wretched like an evil queen in a B side Disney want to be flick. The portions were ok, nothing to get excited about, probably more exciting to get less. But the lesson of the day is the Great Wall is there to protect you and never be crossed. I skipped away into the sunset like a bad comedy where the star makes faces and holds his pants while he desperately looks for a bathroom before the eminent doom occurs. Thanks Great Wall Chinese Food, you’re the greatest, NOT!

Ive been eating at Great Wall for more than 10 years. The food is always great (some of the dishes are a bit spicier than I prefer, so I havent had all of them, but my friends who have like them, too). Everyone I have taken there likes the food, including a Taiwanese ex-GF. My favorite is the Grill Chicken, followed by the Orange Chicken. Admittedly, the ambiance is generic fast food, but the chairs are new (as of late 2011) and the tables are clean. The owners and their employees are friendly and the prices are moderate. I make it a point to eat there when I am in Santa Ana.

Its Chinese fast food. Service is always friendly and great, and the food is pretty good for Chinese fast food. Every once in a while they will experiment and add new items to their precooked menu. Unfortunately the place itself is a little run down and could use any update.

This place is horrible. They cant even get the basics right. The fried rice was way greasy and the chow mein was garbage. The orange chicken had too much breading. The price was about average but definitely not worth it

This is one of the very few good Chinese food places Ive found in Santa Ana. Their food is fresh and its always very fast. Plus, its great for vegetarians! It only loses a star because I wish they had Almond Chicken!

I have the Vegetable Soup with Shrimp for lunch almost everyday. Probably the best Ive had. A good surprise from a very ordinary place. Quick (Call ahead..) fresh, and good! What could be better.
