In my thinking, Trouble has been a victim of its own success. The first 2-3 years after opening, Trouble, with its quirky decor, irregular hours, and "hot rod" espresso machine, beautifully filled a void in the coffee world in the northwest corner of the Outer Sunset. But when nearby Outerlands opened soon after, the hipster crowd grew, and now, any time you might reasonably want coffee (which is most of the day in the generally cold and damp Sunset), theres a line, and a bunch of 30-ish women in leggings and 30-ish guys in skinny jeans and thrift shop jackets, and, well, you know the story. Coffees still great going on fantastic (best mocha and latte Ive had in SF actually) but Trouble isnt the only option now, and these days in SF quirky is normal ... not quirky ... just normal.

The coffee shop is small and the menu selection is simple. I have no issues with either of those two statements but I also dont favor them. I had a dirty chai and a peanut butter toast with bananas and honey. The ingredients seem like good quality ingredients. The dirty chai has an overpowering chai taste, I suppose it is not my cup of tea, but it got my day started. I am disappointed that there arent higher protein breakfast items. I asked the attendant if they accept Samsung Pay, her response was, "absolutely not." She seemed offended and unfriendly. It completely affected my experience. I wouldnt go back. There are far too many establishments that sell coffee to subject myself to someone who seems incapable of fulfilling the description of customer service.

I had this experience second hand and it wasnt a good one. A business friend of mine was having coffee for the first time at Trouble Coffee Co on Judah. Since it was her very first time at this establishment she was not aware of a small sign saying "no electronics". She was on the phone to a business client when from across the shop she was yelled at aloud to, "Get OFF your phone!" She was appalled. After confronting the people who yelled at her that their actions were extremely rude she told them they could have been more professional. Obviously they lost a patron. Too bad the coffee sucked too.

Trouble Coffee is one of my favorite coffee joints in The Sunset. The place is super small but they crank out some of the best coffee around. Their baristas are very knowledgable but can be a bit stand-off-ish. My favorites are the Americanos, Macchiatos (served in an ultra cute cup) and Cold Brew Coffee. Avoid the Tea if you can. The Thick-Cut Cinnamon Toast is splendid. They also have fresh coconuts if youre feeling like you need some hydration. Grab a free sticker and slap it on your laptop! There isnt much seating inside, so sit in the parklet right outside and enjoy the moment.

No frills, impeccably prepared coffee if offered in this tiny, cash only shop. Your choice of cream is limited to whole milk, half and half, and soy. Thats it - no skim milk, no almond milk, no fuss. Tip: while the shop has very limited seating (a few bar stools), the outside sidewalk has convenient stumps and logs reminiscent of gigantic driftwood washed up on the beach, all weathered to just the perfect comfort level for sitting and holding your coffee cup. On a warm sunny day (rare in these parts), theres no place better to wait for a table at Outerlands.

For my birthday I decided what better way to celebrate than treating yourself to some expensive rich mans toast. I order toast. I hand the man four hard earned single dollar bills and prepared myself for toast nirvana. Much to my surprise he handed me back two quarters. I asked what kind of tomfoolery is this. I asked for the $4 toast not the $3.50 toast. I protested, but he assured me it was the real deal. And boy was it ever the real deal. Fully prepared to hate on some toast. I LOVED EVERY SINGLE BITE OF THAT DAMN TOAST. I will return.

This rating is actually for the new location of Trouble Coffee Co. that apparently hasnt made it onto Google yet. I dont appreciate the pretentiousness of this place (re: their lack of menus), but the toast and coffee really are as good as everyone says. The barista was really friendly too, which I wouldnt have expected at such a hip establishment. The Bayview location is great because theres an "urban mini park" set up right outside--a great place to hangout on a nice day.

After waiting 15 minutes for my coffee (they were not busy)... I was told next time, if I order a Gibraltar to go, he would make me something different since a Gibraltar is apparently defined by the glass it is in. I had two young kids in a stroller, I had waited an age, they were bored. I just wanted to enjoy my coffee and sit in the sun. Not too much of an ask... I would also recommend that if you serve food, it may be a good idea to have knives and forks available.

Finally went here and now I know why everyone talks about them. The baristas here are really good and know how to properly make espresso drinks. I got an almond milk Gibraltar and it was one of the best Ive had. Also the baristas here are very positive and unpretentious. They handled all of the orders ahead and after mine extremely courteously and never made anyone feel unwelcome. Great service and coffee!

Trouble Coffee offers some pretty solid coffee. They may have also been the ones to pioneer gourmet toast at something like $5 a pop. Dont get me wrong though. Its damn thick and tasty. This coffee shop is so cramped and narrow that the parklet outside is much needed space. Its beautiful too. It has a bench made out of salvaged wood. Too bad its often too cold to be hanging outside for too long here.

Trouble reminds me of a little alt coffee shop in a sleepy beach city. It kind of is, in that outer sunset can be a very sleepy spot of SF. Coffee is excellent and toast is phenomenal, but dont miss the fruit/nut bars. Made my empty belly very happy one early morning. Highly recommended if youre nostalgic for an era when coffee shops werent full of people on their Macbooks.

Amazing. The Gibraltar here was the best espresso drink Ive had in the U.S. and the staff were very nice and helpful, especially considering how close to closing we came in. The drinks came out incredibly fast and we were offered free drip coffee to wash out our mugs as there was some left over. An excellent experience in every regard. Will certainly be coming back.

Trouble Coffee Co is a staple in the Outer Sunset community. Delicious espresso drinks, thick homemade toast, and fresh coconuts are all thats needed to warm your soul up when the fog hits. They also have lots of wooden benches and tree branches to sit outside and sip your coffee on. Very limited space on the inside, however.

Nhésitez pas à vous arrêter prendre un café ou chocolat chaud en revenant de plage. Pas sûr que vous ayez de la place pour sasseoir mais cest très bon.

So bummed out not meeting Juliette last Sunday (and having to score at the local 7-11 ATM) that I forgot to get toast or coconut... but the latte was fine and the cookie was lip smacking. The sidewalk seating looked just like my fallen cottonwood trees in AZ. Good luck Juliette. See you next time I get back to SF.
