This is the ideal French bistro weekend brunch spot. We found it to be extremely busy during the Saturday lunch hour; luckily, we waited for maybe about 25 minutes before our name was called on the list. Not too bad. We were seated near the front of the bistro (I believe there is an outdoor seating area near the back of the bistro). The place felt like a renovated home turned bistro. Lots of quirky old french posters hanging on the yellow painted walls. Each menu had a different front french poster cover. We liked their mimosas. I have to be honest, we had a hard time deciding on what to order...Oh, what to order!? There were so many excellent options to choose from! If you are vegetarian youll be happy to find some options here. We decided on the Niman Ranch ham eggs benedict and the chicken dijon buckwheat pancakes to taste/share. Both of these savory dishes were tasty in their own right but I actually preferred the eggs Benedict over the buckwheat pancakes with chicken. Each dish was served with a side salad drizzled with a special light vinaigrette. I think what touched me the most was at the very end of our dining experience when we received our bill: complementary truffles accompanied the bill.

As a French girl in San Francisco, I was quite pleased to go to this restaurant to have breakfast. It actually is very well located as it is two blocks away from my house. I just wanted to have a breakfast and work meanwhile, outside of my house. So, I ordered a croissant and a coffee and took a seat. As soon as I opened my laptop, the waitress tells me the boss does not like that. 30 seconds after, the boss comes to tell me that. Ok, but its not a mac, it needs some time to be turned on/off. I asked him the reason of this prohibition. Big mistake! Instead of explaining things nicely, he was very rude and told me I just had to go to another place, that laptops DESTROY his business etc... I was really shoked, I did not mean to stay there for hours, only to have my breakfast... Plus, there was not anybody there, I was the only customer! Are we allowed to read a book or does it destroy his business as well? And finally, the croissant was really bad. I hate places where people think they are superior and dont acre about customer service because theyll have customers anyway. As a French, I felt ashamed and I hope people do not think all the French are like this. Hopefully, the waitress was nice.

Bizarre and unfriendly staff. This USED to be our regular brunch place when we were in SOMA. My wife works nearby and stops in once or twice a month as a treat to pick up a croissant and a coffee. Today though, they decide that theres just no more pastries to go. You want 6 croque monsieurs out the door? No problem. Cup of coffee?? Thats fine. Scone? No way!! How dare you even ask? Youd wonder why theyd keep all their pastries in a display case next to the register along with a stack of to go bags if you werent supposed to... you know... buy them. Its not hard people. You have food, we buy it. Its a long-standing and well respected formula for running a cafe. I guess you dont get it though. To be fair, I guess I understand. Who ever heard of a place that would actually sell customers coffee and a pastry and LET THEM WALK OUT THE DOOR WITH IT? Thats crazy talk. Will never work. Dont tell John Q. Starbucks, his ideas are just too crazy. Seriously Butler & Chef, go suck a lemon. Not everyone can spend an hour on a weekday luxuriating in your cute little bistro. Sometimes its nice though to do your part to spread a little morning cheer.

The Butler & The Chef is quickly becoming one of my favorite places for brunch on Sundays. A small place in South Park, you get a feeling that you have found a hidden treasure in the city. It appears to be very small from the front, but has quite a few tables inside. Ive never seen an empty table to the two times I went for sunday brunch (it was also raining on those days). There is typically a wait, but the turn around is pretty quick. As for the food...Everything is made exceptionally well and very well portioned. It is a bit pricey for brunch, but not pricey enough to detract from the food. So far my favorite items have been the Eggs Benedict, the French Onion Soup Gratinee, and the Banana Belgium Waffle. Great place to recover on sunday! Only if they had bottomless mimosas....

Im French, so from what I ate there I can claim that you shouldnt trust the others comment ranting its genuine french food; as always it comes with local adjustments. I had a breakfast there and i was disappointed by the "pain perdu"; Im a poor cook and yet I can do it better myself. Its just as if they painted the bread with eggs rather like soaking it. The fruit salad was kind of disappointing too, not super fresh strawberries, grapes with still a bit of tail, LOTS of banana. Orange juice (not fresh, but I didnt ask for it) far from awesome and cappuccino made with a machine I suspect, so not good. I would have put two stars if the décor wasnt funnily French and the service was good although a bit long to take my order.

I came here today with several co-workers and left with mixed feelings. The cafe is really cute and charming. However, I ordered the "La Norvegienne" smoked salmon buckwheat crepe with creme fraiche and it was not good at all. It was essentially just smoked salmon under layers of dry, nutty buckwheat crepe. The only detectable creme fraiche was the light drizzle on top; it could have done a lot better with some more sauce between the layers of crepe...I must have made an unlucky choice because all my teammates had delicious-looking dishes. The croque monsieur, in particular, looked amazing. To raise my mood, I ordered the creme brulee. It cracked beautifully and the flecks of vanilla in it made it look pretty luxurious.

Came here on a gloomy Sunday morning and the line wasnt too long. Maybe it was because the rain was off and on that day, but the wait wasnt long at all. Small joint on a nice quiet street in SOMA. Got a small table at the back near the kitchen. It didnt bother me since the restaurant is small to begin with and any spot inside will work. Note: If you have a party bigger than 3 or 4, this place is not for you. Think small restaurant with small tables. We ordered the eggs benedict with salmon and waffles. The food was excellent and its a good local spot. If youre in the area, its worth checking out but I wouldnt make a trek out just to try this place.

All the pictures on this page are of the Eggs Benedict...get the freaking eggs benedict! This place is really small and often has a line out front. But when that eggs benedict shows up and a thick slice of olive french bread, doused in hollandaise sauce with freaking smoked salmon in the middle, youll forget about that lousy wait, especially if you order a bottle of wine for brunch (just do that since the mimosas are kind of expensive. Once we sat down (after about a 20 minute wait) the service was quick and we had a great brunch. This place is cute, laid-back french style and would be good for a date-date or friend-date. Cant wait to come back!
