Eastern Bakery is a Chinatown institution. Its as old school as it gets, being at the same location on Grant Ave for decades! This is the place where Chinese grandmas would place their orders for their famous moon cakes, coffee crunch cake, wedding cakes and "wedding cookies" to be passed at weddings. I have very fond memories of eating their flaky butterfly cookies and steamed sponge cupcakes as a child. My family has been going here for years to get our coffee crunch special occasion cake fix. As the legend goes, Eastern was able to obtain the fame Blums coffee crunch cake recipe - soft spongy cake with whipped cream frosting mixed with chips of coffee crunch candy between the two cake layers and the sides of the cake. Light, airy. Not too sweet, with a nice sweet coffee candy flavor. My family members purposely save room for dessert if its known if this cake is being served. You can also order extra coffee crunch topping by the quarter pound if you want even more. Its great on vanilla ice cream too. What is also cool is that they can write in both Chinese and in English for special occasion desserts with their famous Chinese red icing at no extra charge..

I placed an order for some mooncakes via email on a Monday and got them delivered on Wednesday. Unbelievably quick turnaround with the shipping. The mooncakes themselves ere absolutely delicious! Im big on the yolks so I ordered a batch of 4 yolk mooncakes. WOW! They are incredibly moist and the yolks are amazing. I also ordered a batch of Kee Wah mooncakes and would be nice to see how they compare in flavor and moistness. I just hope they are as good as Eastern Bakerys as I paid double with them. I rated for top notch service via email. Elaine is great and extremely easy to deal with. I shot her an email of what I wanted and I sent her a check. Thats it! Mooncakes deliverd 2-3 days tops. Im on a diet and these mooncakes are not helping at all... They are so yummy.

The bakery offers an extensive variety of baked goods, steamed food and sweets. Everything looked so good that I had to debate with myself while sampling several items. Every single one that I bought was tasty. I tried moon cake, butterfly cookie, puffy pastry, among others. If I were in town a little longer, I would definitely come back and try more. The shop stays open till quite late (a plus, since we only had time to shop late night), and the lady who should be the shop owner was super nice; she asked us not to pay for the little extras (btw, the price was quite reasonable). Also, it seems to be the place that former President Clinton had once visited. On the wall was a huge picture showing him having a bite of some chocolate thingy.

I had my first pork roll from Eastern Bakery when my dad took me there as kid in the early 70s, Since then I have never found a pork roll that even comes close, anywhere else (although going to China may change that). But this is the best youll find in North America, and if you have a sweet tooth make sure to try one of their bow ties too. Bring cash or check - no CC accepted. BTW - for those of you rating them one star for their apple pies, try McDonalds espresso drinks and youd give them a one too. who knows, maybe Starbucks will start serving burgers too. I know not why either offers menu items they shouldnt, but stay on the Asian side of the menu at Eastern Bakery and youll be leaving with a dozen to go too.

Centrally located in Chinatown, this can easily be your one stop shop for Asian baked goods. They have a huge selection where pretty much anyone can find something that they would like. I simply got a chocolate chip cookie (more like chocolate chunks rather than chips) and it was very good. Its difficult to tell from appearance, but the cookie tasted very fresh (I ate it a couple of days after purchasing) and it had a great texture. I prefer cookies that are soft as compared to crunchy and it was nice and soft and had the perfect amount of chocolate chunks. I was the only customer in the bakery at the time so I was able to pick my cookie and pay in less than two minutes.

Eastern Bakery is probably the oldest and most well known Chinese bakery in SF Chinatown. They have a few hard to find Chinese bakery items like chocolate moon cakes and fried bow ties here. Their $1 pork buns are filling and cheap, which is always a good combo. Theyre cheap, but not the cheapest. Theres another bakery West of them on Stockton a few blocks North thats a bit cheaper and of comparable quality that probably just gets less notice because its not on the main Chinatown strip. This place is located on a one way street where parking can be a pain.

Im a golden gate bakery loyalist but sometimes i feel like its a bit over rated. They just so happened to be "on vacation" again so I tried out this place. I was very surprised that both the egg custard tart and the sweet butter bun were very good (although the egg custard is better at golden gate in my opinion). I still like this place and want to come back to try other things. They have a ridiculously expansive selection of moon cake, if that is your thing. Service is great here, super nice.

The sign on the wall said Eastern bakery is the oldest bakery in Chinatown since 1942 we were here before the Great Depression debate bridges in World War II. They have a picture on the wall of Bill Clinton became here in 1996. This is my wifes favorite place I love the food here. That have home-made moon cakes, tarts along and many other traditional pastries. I have the coconut fruit filled cake for $3.50.

Awesome giant size sesame ball for $1.25/ea, cash only. My kids gobbled down the custards. We were there on 03/02/17 for the 1st time at 11 am and we went back to order $30 worth of bbq buns, custards, sesame balls at 1pm for to go. The owners are very nice and we will be back again when we get back in SF from Louisiana.

My first pork buns - and til this day, the best Ive had. My girlfriend also loved their chicken buns, and a few of their pastries. All in all, it was a pleasant experience, and one we continue with every visit to SF. The location itself looks run down and outdated, but dont let that stop you from giving them a try!

I was attacked by a homeless guy in this bakery and the staff did absolutely nothing. It was very quiet that day so they definitely saw what was going on. They just looked on as he was bearing over me and threatening to drag me out of the restaurant and throw me into a trash can. I had to call the police myself.

I first tasted the desserts from this bakery 25 years ago in a friends care package at college. Ive visited a few times in person in the ensuing years. The egg tarts keep drawing me back. On our most recent visit they were fresh out of the oven--flaky crust, slightly sweet custard--just excellent.

Ive had pork buns from around the United States and Eastern Bakery has the best barbecue pork buns around. Hands down. Ive had one for breakfast, for lunch and for a snack and I cant come to town without stopping by. I mean, I could but why? Pop in and get two, piping hot and delicious!
