One of the few places that has Lagavulin 16 yo Scotch. A reasonably affordable must try that to me rivals Scotch thats in the car payment bottle range. This is not a British Pub. This is an American Pub of English influence. I know where we are and where this is, so I didnt full expect the traditions to be met or kept as you can probably tell. The etiquette of a British pub right as it drastically differs from American pubs here in the states. Etiquette plays an important role across the pond. Ordering is done at the bar in pints or half pints, no servers. You dont tip and offer the bartender a drink, not to buy them one. Order your food with your drink and the server will find you, no 2nd or 3rd trip asking how it was and they clean up after you leave. Most pubs dont offer food in the evenings and usually do some what wed call apps during lunch. Most people eat at grab and go places after drinking and on the way home. This isnt England though. A decent beer selection, but not quite up to date with the rapidly changing local craft beer scene here in SD. Quite a few European beers on tap. A full bar able to make your standard everything. Nothing special in variety except that deep Scotch list. Bartender was not as knowledgeable as Id expect on these. Massive pieces of cod almost the size of your arm adorn the plate of fish & chips. Fat steak cut fries and about 1/3 as much tartar as Id like make up the traditional English food. Squishy peas is what I was hoping for. Its simple really just boil, drain, add butter, pepper, salt and mash. Add reserve liquid until squishy. This is a good bar that serves a variety of English food. Service is good, much more forgiving that in England, food is pretty good considering England is not known for their cuisine and probably the best place to get these dishes outside of a home setting. Ill give them that it seems English, tastes English, but even with all intents and purposes isnt. Free parking if you dont have anything bigger than a midsized. Service is excellent. Its super fun to come drink Guinness and watch a match or two. Dont come here to get hammered on a Tuesday or for HH with your co-workers. If youre going to eat here, come for breakfast and tea and to pick up some trinkets or for dinner on a none game night. My apologies this was so long.

Overall this place is pretty neat. All the employees spoke in English accents and Im not sure if they are all from Britain or its part of the created atmosphere but it was neat. It definitely has British fare and prices arent too shabby. Whom I believe was the owner, or at least the manager, actually stopped by our table and asked how we were doing. She seemed genuinely concerned when it came to asking if my husband wanted more gravy for his meal. It made me chuckle but was nice to see genuine care. Our server was kind, there were lots of happy faces and laughs shared, the employees seemed to be a great team and the atmosphere is really neat. They even have an old telephone booth outside. I give it 4 instead of 5 stars due the fact that the food was okay but not all that impressive and the alcoholic beverage I got was way watered down.

If you like British pub food, or just Fish n Chips, then this is the place. In a word authentic. Parking can be challenging, but it is a kid friendly real pub (public house). Guinness and Speckled Hen and many other ales on tap. Curry and proper Chips (so much better than french fries from a bag), bangers and happy hour specials each day. Their Fish n Chips won best in USA. They are very good, best I can remember. Full lunch and dinner menu. Friendly service. Shakespear has a charming, historic-feeling vibe, plus a small area for darts (hard to find these days). Great covered patio and indoor tables with view of magnificent sunsets. TVs for the football and other European favorites like F1. If you work downtown, stop by and check it out. Its worth a trip if you dont. Its on the upper level from the street.

My wife says Shakespeares isnt authentic. That its not a real pub. I guess shes right, its not a traditional English pub with small rooms, roaring fires, warm beer and cozy feeling. This is an English pub in San Diego. Great out door space, cold beer, best trivia night hands down and passable pub food. I mean, I think the mushy peas with sausage and mash are just fine. I dont care that they arent 100% authentic. Shakespeares is great. The only reason its not 5 stars is the parking is damned near impossible. With all the places around street parking can be a real hassle and once youre wound back up in the neighborhood east of India street, theres really no good way to get back out of there. Come early if youre planning on coming to beat people coming home from work, taking up all your street parking.

Me and my equally Anglophile boyfriend love it here. It seems a majority of the staff are English themselves. I recommend checking out their brunch, as the English breakfast is incredible. Ive tried just about everything on the menu and even their regular bar food (wings and chicken tenders) is delicious. The bangers and mash are the best Ive had, the pot pies have actual puff pastries on top. Everything seems to come with peas, which is my favorite vegetable. It can get pricey if you arent cautious, but the plates are massive. They always have awesome imports on tap, and If youve never had a Black Velvet, get one here.

The Shakespeare Pub in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego, CA is a fine example of a British Pub in America. Since spending much of my early youth in England, I learned that pubs are simple, social, homely, and convenient places of gathering. Luckily the Shakespeare is a 10 minute walk from my house, so check on convenience. It is also located at the intersection of the 5 freeway and Washington Blvd making it easy to get to. As with much of San Diego, parking is generally an issue, however there are several side streets, including Washington blvd itself, that have places to park your vehicle.

On December 29 this place had the shortest line of any restaurant on the block. And we soon found out the reason. Our party was in a mild hurry so we took a chance. My fish and chips was very average at best, one of my associates had the kidney pie which he described as good, but another associate had the "Gammons" ham steak, which was just terrible, overcooked to the point where it could not be cut with a knife. Our server was friendly, but inattentive and impossible to find when it was time to pay the bill. At least the Boddingtons was tasty.

This place is really cool, we sat on the patio and it was very nice. My food and alcohol was great, service however was pretty bad. Waitress brought us our food and never came back. I had to go inside to the bar to get a glass of water, and then again to get a check to leave. Didnt catch her name or else I would have said something to a manager. Hopefully this was just an isolated incident, because it would have been 5 stars otherwise!
