Modern Coffee is a cute, tucked away spot that offers quality coffee with a non-pretentious attitude. After having been to my fair share of hipsters-centric coffee spots (and having worked at one myself) it was really nice to be able to stop into Modern for a really delicious cup of coffee. Modern has an easy-going vibe with simple but interesting decor. They offer a wide variety of single origin coffees, served a variety of different ways. Being an avid coffee lover, I was pleasantly surprised with their offerings and the reasonable prices for the drinks. A great place to grab an afternoon cup of joe, hot or cold, to break up the workday!

Modern Coffee is one of my favorite coffee shops. They make their mochas with a great balance of sweetness and espresso. They also have a great tea selection. During the colder months, they have Burnt Cinnamon, which can be added to a number of drinks. And during the warmer months, they have a Lavender syrup. And baked goods are served from local bakeries.

Ive been a customer for the past 5 years and the coffee quality is OUTSTANDING! The pastries are fresh and theres always a variety to choose from. Personal favorite is the ginger-pear! The staff is always pleasant and gives great info on the menu if you simply cant choose. Absolutely LOVE Kristen and hope to see more Modern Coffee Shops around the Bay!

The staff are really nice and I love the decorations. I didnt find their latte to be amazing but it was pretty good. And good prices. And you can buy beans here too! They have different beans, all freshly roasted with roast date clearly marked. You get a discount on coffee when you buy beans from them!

Modern Coffee is my favorite coffee place when Im staying in the area. They have the standard espresso drink fare, but I go for the rotating selection of single origin beans they serve as pourover. The prices are remarkably good, too (under $4 for a pourover is practically unheard of in California).

Theres a reason Modern Coffee is so popular, the espresso is always smooth and delicious, the steamed milk is velvety and the atmosphere and staff are lovely. They make my favorite lattes and even their decaf beans taste good. I am so thankful to work near a coffee shop that always gets it right!

Always super consistent and friendly staff. I love the variety of coffee they offer on rotation; particularly being able to get certain roasters from Portland in Oakland, and I love counter culture coffee so thats always a great option:)

Service is not up to speed like at some other coffee shops, the soy milk they use gives the coffee an unpleasant aftertaste and it is located in area where the locals frequently urinate or defecate on the street.

I come to Modern about 2-3 times a week before heading to the office; its probably the best coffee I can get in the Bay Area... the staff is very friendly and buying the $20 cards saves me some money.

This is my go to place in Oakland for coffee. It pours the Bay Areas best roasted coffees from the likes of Verve, 4 Barrel, Sightglass and Ecco. Very friendly staff and quick service.
