I want to like them more sooo badly ( theyre so close to five stars). The cocktails are great -- balanced and generally very well done. They encourage plates to be shared; some are sizable enough for sharing others are more appetizer sized. Like the meatballs. The meatballs are absolutely delicious, but three meatballs in a very small sized pot of sauce is all one can devour, share it between two or more and everybodys left wanting. Two people dining need to order about four items off the menu to be satiated. Not a horrible thing, but with prices as they are, if you have a couple drinks a piece (or a cocktail and a bottle), youll leave spending close to $100 a piece (with tip). You will leave satisfied, just be prepared for the expense. Food and drinks truly are very good, definitely better than Ive had down the street (at multiple places), at similar prices. With all said and done, if you really want to have Charlie Hallowells food, but at a slightly lower price point, you might want to go across the street to Boot & Shoe if youre okay with pizza and salad. But if youre looking to impress a dining mate, come here, youll find well-prepared food, and menu that everybody can find something to order from.

i stopped at this restaurant after visiting the newly opened "grand fare market" next door. the decor and atmosphere i liked. the food that we got was delish... but not for what we paid? the concept is that everything is supposed to be served family style, so maybe i didnt get it? the honest vibe i got from the place was that they were trying to as upscale as SF or Napa but nothing stuck out great enough to make the place memorable. the food was good, but not good enough IMHO. id probably not pick to come back unless it was for a get together, birthday or whatnot.

Great Hamachi Crudo; fair steelhead rillettes (really quite boring); super drinks: The Cerulian Hart is a wonderful pineapple/rum based drink with a great kick of ginger. Desserts were fine, if pedestrian. The tables are comfortable, service is non-oppressive and the staff seems very kind. Noise level is a little high, and weekends are hopelessly crowded. Slightly overpriced on the whole, but convenient and a good addition to the neighborhood.

Great ambiance. The interior design is creative Service is wonderful. On a Saturday night, its hard to have a conversation without yelling while band is playing. I enjoyed the music but would have appreciated the volume be turned down a little. Food tastes fabulous. Unusual food combinations that work. I feet portions were on the lighter side and I left hungry. otherwise they would get a 5 star rating.

This seems like a really nice place. But I cant really review the food or the service because my visit was for a closed event with a special, fixed menu. The service I received as unobtrusive and polite - exactly what the event organizers wanted as the courses were served in between speakers. The food - and drinks - I had were excellent - and that bodes well for ordering off their regular menu.

Good food and some interesting stuff on the menu, but frankly doesnt stand out from other places that have the same concept and aesthetic cropping up all over Oakland. We had to wait a while for a table, the space is very loud, and the prices seem high, so just doesnt seem worth the effort to go here as opposed to so many of the other good dining options close by.

Hostess made a huge faux pau asked me to move over in the waiting area. Are you seriously asking a customer to make room for a walk-in you seat before me? Ive been cut in line 4xs. Fire this woman. Why dont I cook my own food, serve it to myself and then tip you 30% at the end?... STFU and dont ask customers to do anything other what you want to eat. #service

Fantastic atmosphere with several different seating options: at the bar, shared table, individual tables. This means the place is comfy for every occasion. They have a nice tapas menu, a nice wood fired grill and an amazing selection of alcohol and cocktails. Service is friendly and fast. Dont miss it!

Great food, wonderful atmosphere. The menu changes all the time, so its hard to recommend something specific. Youll love it if youre adventurous and like to share delicious, innovative dishes with friends and family. There can be a very long wait around dinner time do make sure you make a reservation!

Cant say enough good things. The food is original, beautiful, served by a great staff and delicious. We came for dinner, they changed out the salad I ordered incorrectly and brought me the one I had meant to order with no problem. Their cocktail program is great too. Homemade Pimms Cup was awesome.

Not a fan of the communal bar seating arrangement. Food looks nice but lacking tastewise and size wise. It is cool how you can see right into the kitchen. Have to give credit to the bone marrow. That was pretty good.

Very tasty small dishes. Eclectic jazz / R&B outfit playing too a couple Sundays ago. Nice large windows looking out to Grand Ave. get there early for your reservation because parking is tough. Valet would be nice.

Always a wonderful assortment of delicious small plates and entrees. Warm, friendly atmosphere and superior service. Tend to go earlier in the evening as it can get loud later on. Love this place.

Sunday Jazz Jam was an unexpected addition to a late romantic dinner. They gad run out of a lot of food options by then but it was still worth the visit.
