Ive been on a really good BBQ hunt in the OC for the last 3 years. So far nothing beats Austin, but keeping in the OC this is one of the better places Ive visited. On a Friday at 7:30pm, the restaurant was full so we sat at the bar. which has a great view of the kitchen and most importantly, the giant smoker in the middle of the kitchen floor. We ordered the short ribs and pork ribs. The seasoning is kept to a minimum on both items and the meat and a little slather of BBQ sauce really speak for themselves. Its not overly smokey, which Im OK with but also like a little smokier. Short ribs were very tender as they are smoked for about 8-10 hours. You get one rib, probably weights at 1.5 lbs with the bone, so its a lot of meat for one person. The marbling really accentuates the flavors and you get a rich bite each time. Again, not overly seasoned but you get hints of salt, pepper and some bbq sauce they lather. The pork ribs were very good but 1. not as tender as I wouldve liked and 2. not as smokey either. I dont want a fall off the bone tender since there should be a bit of give when you bite into the ribs, but it should come off the bone entirely if you pull the meat out. Bits and pieces still stick to the bone, which means it probably couldve used an extra 1-2 hours on the smoker, that also wouldve helped with the additional smoked flavor. To each his own though. They have 2 BBQ sauces, sweet and spicy. If you like spicy, youll be happy to know this is proper spicy as its made with habaneros and ghost chili peppers. If you tolerate spicy very well, this will be a nice spicy level that doesnt make you suffer a lot. If you tolerate spicy somewhat well, this is gonna burn you. If you dont tolerate spicy at all, this will destroy you. The sides arent anything to write home about, theyre decent but nothing amazeballs. The blueberry cornbread is nice though. We talked with the owner/pitmaster Kenny for a while, hes a really nice guy and always happy to chat. Next time we go, were gonna try the brisket, that looked amazing.

Tender and delicious BBQ! My GF and I came here because she was craving pulled pork. She was going to order the sandwich but the pulled pork fries caught her stomach. We also decided to try the brisket sandwich. Well, the fries were delicious and came in a large portion. There were beans, pulled pork, lots of cheese and scrumchious seasoned fries (it comes with coleslaw but we put it on the side). The fries came with a side of sweet corn on the cob. The corn a good taste despite being served plain, which I prefer. I like to butter and salt my own corn. I prefer crisp corn and this was very soft, so I was a bit disappointed. The brisket sandwich came on Texas toast with some damn fine tasting and tender brisket, cooked to perfection. I added a bit of the sweet tasting BBQ sauce, which is some of the best Ive ever had (I grew up in the South and have had BBQ from St Louis to Tn to SC to Texas). But I do have a sweet tooth. Im a lover of all things blueberry, so I had to try the blueberry cornbread. It tasted more like a blueberry bran muffins but it was made with real corn and blueberries and not overly sweet. My GF and I shared everything and we couldnt eat it all. The place is pretty small but has a trendy decor to it. It has a small bar, maybe 6 seats. The bar is right in front of the cooker. Definitely sit there if you want to see mouth watering piece after piece of meat being removed. We sat at the bar and met the owner Kenny. Hes a very nice humble guy, who makes BBQ that rivals the east coast. He may be forever known as the man who created Hollywood BBQ! I only gave it four stars because its my first time and a BBQ spot has to have sweet tea. But I get it, its California, the land of unsweetened tea. BBQ this good should not be in a strip mall. It deserves its own spot. Hopefully, Kenny will get the opportunity to make it happen. I cant wait to try the ribs, they looked so damn good. Ill be back.

After eating here for the very first time last night, I know instantly that Ill be back. I went with 2 of my buddies and we loved the ambience. All the seats are crammed in there, as its not too large of a dining area, and there was a wait for tables, but we were seated at the bar right away. Since it was all of our first times there, we essentially ordered one of everything. By far, our favorite was the full rack beef ribs (in my picture with the mashed potatoes and coleslaw). Whats great is that they serve these things per day, so if theyre sold out that day, thats it, order something else. Other than the incredible food, what really stood out to me was how many repeat customers were there last night. Every one of them absolutely loved the food. Another really cool aspect about this place that my friends and I dont see most other places is that the owner (never caught his name) is the one that tends to and cuts the meats. We were there up til closing and saw the man at his craft. Easy to see that he loves his work and is genuinely friendly with all the patrons I no longer have to go to Phils BBQ in San Deigo to get magnificent BBQ. The worrisome contradiction for me is that this place absolutely deserves to be popular, BUT I dont want it to get too popular that I cant find a seat. If you want a place for BBQ, go here and go here soon.

+ Pork Ribs + Hot Link + Blueberry Corn Bread + Twice Baked Potato + BBQ Sauce + Spicy (actually spicy) BBQ Sauce - Ventilation is bad - Small dining area - Run out of meats early We arrived last night at 6:15PM to a full house and a wait. Luckily the wait wasnt too bad, we were seated at 6:30PM. Youll immediately notice that the room isnt well ventilated and is pretty stuffy (They eventually opened the doors to let some cool air in). The dining area is pretty small, this place does look like a take out place more than a dine in. They have a dry erase board on display with the items that theyve run out of which steadily increased until we left at 7:30PM. We were disappointed to see they ran out of the beef ribs, but were glad they still had pork ribs. The Pork Ribs were very tender and fell off the bone. Very smokey and flavorful even without their bbq sauce. We added on a hot link which was also pretty good. The Blueberry Corn Bread and the Twice Baked Potato are the go to sides. The mash potatoes were okay, Id pass on those. I also liked their BBQ sauce, both the spicy and non-spicy. The Spicy BBQ sauce has a real good kick, if you dont regularly eat spicy foods Id recommend trying a little before lathering your ribs in the Spicy BBQ.

Went there with a chef friend of mine. He told me this was the best smoked food he has ever had. I told him not a chance that the best place is in Phoenix AZ. WELL he was right. I dont think I can eat at the AZ spot after this. Small place with a wait that is well worth it! Oh and go early as they do sell out of things. We had babybacks and brisket. Ya I want my baby back baby back baby back but never at Chilies only at THE SMOKING RIBS!!! The brisket was definitely not lean but in my book it was done exactly as it should be. One side a touch fatty and one side a touch lean! The ribs were sauced just right cooked down and sticky. And had 2 types of sauce on the table. The regular was perfect the hot was HOT so a little goes a long way. Even had a visit from the owner to ask how it was. A nice touch. And this brings me to the baked beans. Or should I say the smoked beans. Not overly spiced like most home made beans. I was stuffed and could not stop eating the beans. Dont want to get Roy the dogs recipe any more because I found the best baked beans in the world and Ill bet money on that! And I forgot to take pics because I was in awe of the way it looked and couldnt wait to start eating.
