The good thing about Thai food, is now I know how its all made and Im a much better judge of things since I took a Thai cooking class. My first experience of Thai since that class and I really tried to use my palate to sense the subtle variances in each restaurant. First of all décor is light, simple, clean and neat. They use white table clothes and serve on porcelain dishes. Each table has fresh flowers on it that really let you know they care. The pricing is very competitive, unlike many places on the island that are not with similar establishments off the island. Not a bad place to take a date as there is plenty to walk around and do afterwards in the area, gelato shop called Moo something is my suggestion. Tom Ka soup seemed to be more clear than expected, but just the right amount of sour from the tamarind. I prefer the rounded out taste of black/white pepper to some people who add hot pepper to their soups. I also prefer the minimal bamboo shoots, which as many know if not cooked/soaked properly can be little daggers. Pad Si Eew had tender beef and succulent broccoli, but I found the noodles to be a a little broken and the sauce to be a tad burned, which is weird because I found the soy they used to be saltier than most sweet soys and Id imagine the burning was from the sugars. Nice size for 1 person, but Ive got a healthy appetite and I went with the Green Curry which was thick and hearty, needed very little rice to compliment it. I went with the 5 spice level and it was tame, I prefer a measured scale rather than the exponential type which I feel is meant to deter people from over spicing, but hard for us who like and can handle spice to accurately judge. As good as a thai iced tea is the real business is in the coffee. Yes I understand the price can be off putting, but its really not pricey for the quality you get and its been so engrained in us that Asian food is usually cheap. The average person cant appreciate the scale of good to bad and fine dining isnt exclusive to Italian and French and things you cant cook. Were so accustomed to getting $6 pad thai in a slightly large portion, but doesnt taste homecooked. So when you see a restaurant serving high quality Thai food in a better than average setting you seem blown away at paying $15 for that. You could go to outback and get a mediocre steak for the same price and not skip a beat, but proportionally bad is that compared to Ruths Chris or Mortons.

My family and I loved this place, but recently we ordered take-out two different times and the first time there were these stringy things in my curry and being that we have been there many times before and I always order the same thing...these stringy things were not suppose to be in my curry. So, we called and took our food back. The manager apologized and told us that the cooks were making banana bowls from banana leaves and that the cooks had been preparing them too close to where they prep the food and so the stringy things made it into my curry. They told us that they were harmless, but who wants to go through eating their dinner pulling these fibrous things out of their food. They sent us home with different curry, but I had lost my appetite and didnt care for it anymore. So, then a few months later we decide to give it another go and I ordered chicken satay for my 4 year old son. We ordered it for take-out along with our meals and we got it home and I was cutting up my sons chicken satay and checking to make sure everything was cooked properly, well good thing I did and did not just let him eat the chicken off the skewers because two skewers of chicken were essentialy raw!!!! It was DISGUSTING!!! I was irate because my sweet 4 year old could have gotten seriously sick from this place. I called them up and I was fuming and told them that the chicken was undercooked (which was an understatement b/c it was defnitey raw) and they told me that is how it was suppose to be cooked. From my experience, chicken is never suppose to be like that, so my husband walked our meal back and the people and cooks swallowed their words!!! Once again, they apologized profusely, but that is just something you dont screw up!!! So, we will NEVER go back there again which is sad bc for many years it was our favorite place to go for Thai!! Anyways, just wanted to put the word out b/c it seems the cooking is going down hill in a big way!

Do yourself a favor and order the chicken dumplings as an appetizer. Heres what I tried: Dumplings: OUT OF THIS WORLD!! Chicken satay: standard. Spring rolls: very long. Fried rice: excellent!! One of the best Ive ever tasted. Pad Puk (vegetable stir fry): a tad bit oily, but really good!! Sticky rice with mango: superb. Thai iced tea: very good. I worked at a Thai restaurant for over 2 years and I try to find a Thai restaurant wherever I go, especially on vacation. This restaurant was the only Thai place within walking distance from my hotel and I am SO glad I found it!! The dumplings were so delicious that I went back the next day and ordered them for lunch. Prices are average... about $10.95+ a plate. Really great atmosphere and beautiful interior. Classy, but not too fancy. You can even eat outside if youd like. Seems like a popular destination for visitors and locals alike. P.S. Ive read the other reviews and did not experience poor service... maybe they visited on an off-night.

We spent a week in San Diego sampling restaurants and touring the city. By weeks end alll four of us agreed that the Swaddee Thai Restaurant was one of our top finds. We loved the bright decor and the staffs traditional dress. The service was very polite and accommodating. The food was the star of the evening. Our son and his wife had the vegetarian spring rolls which were slightly overcooked but delicious. The accompanying pork dumplings were some of the best weve ever had. Each dumpling was moist with ground pork and an understated sauce making for 2-3 bites each. The red curry, coconut with chicken, bamboo, eggplant etc was slightly spicy and perfectly prepared. I immensely enjoyed the pad thai which I ordered with tender shrimp and was served with a healthy topping of ground peanut for added texture. The bill was quite reasonable and a real bargain for the experience. Wish this restaurant was in our hometown!

Weve been coming here for about 5 years now and LOVE it. I noticed other reviews that said the service was poor however weve never had a bad experience. I always get the Gang Kua with just veggies, no meat or tofu with a side of sticky rice. Never fails to hit the spot. Ive also tried the vegetarian spring rolls and the dumplings. Both were great. Friends that we go with always try different things and are never disappointed. WARNING: If they tell you its spicy they mean it! I can usually hold my own but the one time I tried a different dish that was spicy the lady told me I probably wouldnt like it. She was right and I thought I was dying. It is a bit on the pricier end. Expect to pay about $40 for dinner for 2 (drinks, appetizer and meals) but its worth it to me based on the food, atmosphere and considering its on Coronado. The restaurants there tend to be a bit more than I would spend elsewhere anyway.
