This review is partially based on Lux and partially based on the clientele. Lux is what you think of when you think coffee shop. It reminds me of the places I went in Portland during college. One frustrating thing is they dont really have a menu available. Its not a huge deal breaker, but sometimes I want something new/different and having a bit of inspiration helps. The second thing: space. Its always packed regardless of if you go at 1 p.m. on a Monday or 7 p.m. on a Friday. You probably can find a seat for yourself (3/4 of the time at least), but youre going to struggle if there are 2 or more people. Also, dont go there if you want a quiet place to study, work, read, etc. Its loud. No other way to describe it. Even with earplugs I still hear the crowd. The second: clientele. This definitely is an attended hipster place. People trying to act cool ("look at my Macbook Air and my ratty shirt!"), so they can be judgemental. For instance, the other day I went into a room with 7 people and sat down with my 17 Dell. The other 7 people around me had Macbook Airs and, I kid you not, one personal chuckled and a few others smiled. No big deal, but I come to relax and have a great coffee ... not to be judged. Overall, a great place with little space. If Im near it, Ill drop in, but if Im trying to work, etc., I go to Starbucks .... thats how loud/cramped it is.

Service service service! Depending on the time of day that you visit greatly determines the service that you will get. Out of the five cashiers/order takers there is only one nice person. The food is good but extremely over priced. I mean Extream as in $3.00 for one cookie. Let's talk about coffee, great coffee how ever don't buy their glass jar for $20 that they refill for $10 its a rip off. The glass only holds .5lb off coffee that you can purchase for $7.00 rather than $10 if you bring your glass jar. I found this out by error. I meant to bring my jar for its first refill and forgot it. So I purchased the .5lb of coffee and brought it home. To my surprise that glass jar purchase from Lux with a $10caller refill could only hold a half pound off coffee that cost me $7.00 rather than $10. Its simple good business ethics are what keep customers. I don't by my fresh coffee from Lux any longer and went from frequently visiting Lux 3-4with days a week to almost never. Also, over heard a customer speaking to his group of friends that apparently visit Lux daily say that he stopped tipping because the order taker remembered all of their names but his. Really! ! ...... treat each customer the same with the utmost respect because its ethical business practice!!! Sorry Lux but you SUCK!!

Supposedly, the "in" coffee shop in Central Phoenix. Well they try hard but despite the efforts at becoming the "Cafe Portlandia" of Phoenix, every time I go there I wind up disappointed. The ambiance is cheap. Poor seating with an overflow of students who have their noses stuck in laptops. The prices high for food that is "frou-frou" at best. A "large" almond milk chai comes in a cup that barely qualifies as skinny medium and costs $5.15 (up a dollar in 6 months.) I ask if the price has increased. Little girl behind counter: "were sorry, but we had to increase the price because the price of the green coffee beans has gone up". The connection to the rip-off price of Chai escapes me. Chai has no coffee in it. If this is gentrification in Central Phoenix you can have it. Try AJs just down the street at Camelback instead. Much better selection. Better seating . Better prices. Or just stay home. Dont waste your time.

I really want to like this place... the food, ambiance, and selection of alcohol and coffee are great! But the service is sad. I was the only one in line to order a simple espresso con panna and I watched the girl go through her snap chat story while I waited. Once she finished laughing at what she saw and replied with a photo of HERSELF, she took my order. Also the female bartender is completely unfriendly and everytime I asked for something it seems like the end of the world. College kids give college kids service and maybe thats why they go here. But to think of this as an establishment that people want to go to is beyond me. Also the bartenders DO NOT CARD A SINGLE PERSON!!! They ask if your 21 and if you say yes, they give you alcohol without a second glance. WELCOME ALL MINORS!!!! YOUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!! Absolutely disgusted by the service level.

As a first time customer I thought the place was pretty cool. My experience wasnt that great but it was more my fault than anything. When we went in I was a bit overwhelmed and got confused, my aunt thought she overheard a woman say there was two lines up front so we went straight to the cashier to order a quick drink. After the brunette at the register gave me a dirty look realized I had just cut in line but it was too crowded for me to try and scamper off. The old woman beside me was really nice about it but I could tell I was getting looks. I left feeling pretty bad and my social anxiety made it seemed exponentially worse. I dont live in the area so its not likely Id go back but I felt like a jerk. The drinks were wonderful however and Im sure the atmosphere wouldve been cozy had I stayed

The place is OK. We went here as it is rated by some as the best place in Phoenix metro to get an espresso. Yeah, its better than Starbucks (not hard to do) and they roast their own coffee, but its a blend & they dont do anything special with the beans. Food was just ok too. Its also very crowded. Maybe some rate this as the best coffee house to go because it is hip, but I dont go to a coffee shop (nor buy appliances/electronics/clothing etc. ) for its brand, but for the product. I wouldnt avoid the place but its not a place Id frequent even if it was close to home as the line - at least the day we went in the summertime - was ridiculously long & the place was uncomfortably crowded. Sorry, but Cartel wins as the best metro coffee joint to me.

The espresso is spot-on, but what I really dislike about this place is the seating, crowds and internet. Even though Lux is quite large, there is far too many people and far too few seating areas to accommodate everyone... Lux is one of those places that became really trendy so now every Tom, Dick & Harry go there. The seating that they do have, I feel is a bit awkward. Lastly, every single time I have been here, the Wi-Fi has never worked! The only explanation I have got (after asking 3 or 4 employees) is that they only allow 50 people on at a time. Thats would work out great if Lux didnt constantly have more than 50 patrons ALL THE TIME. One of my favorite espressos, but one of my least favorite coffee houses. I miss the good ol days at Lux.
