The Hillside Spot used to be our go to local place, but the food has really gone downhill. On the last three trips: burger that was asked for medium rare was well done and dry - when pointed out the response was it is hard to grill it the way you want, bacon on breakfast plate was fried to a black crisp mess - one bite and it was scattered all over the plate, and the worst was a spicy tuna (Suki) bowl - the tuna was grey!!! When asked what was going on the shift manager said it looked that way because the tuna was probably several days old. Who serves several day old grey sushi tuna? They have also changed out their draft beer selection based on their resident "beer expert" recommendations. All I know is they stopped carrying Four Peaks Kiltlifter (they have it in cans but come on why would you drink a good beer out of a can - love that aluminum taste perhaps?). Im not a fan of IPAs but you have a choice of three (out of 6-8 taps). You want a dark draft beer you can have a cherry vanilla porter - come on?!? Who is this "beer expert". Thankfully they do continue to have a great selection of bottled beers. Not the same as draft but way better than cans. In their defense the manager told me that they rotate some of the taps every few months, and that their "beer expert" advised them that folks dont drink dark beers during Arizona summers - of course this conversation took place at the start of April. WTF!! I love good local establishments, but Im sorry to say that if they dont improve the quality/consistency of the food and get back on track with their draft beer selection this place is circling the drain. When I brought these concerns to the shift manager, he basically just blew me off as can be seen by his responses that I shared above. Not the attitude you want in your managers. One bright spot is still the staff, but service can be slow so dont go in if you are in a time crunch. Ive moved on to another local place as my go to restaurant. Maybe Ill try the Hillside Spot in 6 months to see if they have gotten their act together. That is, if they are still in business.

We have been trying to give these guys chance after chance for years! No More! Tonight was the last straw. Every single time we have tried to eat here, there has been some issue from the food to the service. Its Saturday night at 7:00 pm and they have about 12 tables. Nellos across the parking lot is mobbed with patrons waiting outside. Umm, whats wrong with this picture? Tonight, we came in and were seated right away but it took awhile for our server to get to us. She came and took our drink order then left again. She came back with the drinks and took our order. We ordered the Grazing Platter with 3 items. We were pretty disappointed with the quality of the meats and cheeses on the platter. Our food came and the server dumped our plates down and didnt even bother to pick up the dishes and so forth from our appetizer. Then my husband looked at his Croque Madame. His over easy egg looked like rubber and was so overcooked it the yoke was solid. The sandwich was charred on the edges and pretty much inedible. We tried for 15 minutes to get someones attention, including calling out "excuse me" and we were ignored. When we finally got her attention and my husband let her have it, he didnt ask her to take the food away because he was starving and had decided to make due. She took the food without asking, my husband having said he didnt want anything else. She left him with a tiny cup of berries. He refused to take half of my burger until I said I was full. Which I did on purpose so he had something to eat. We saw her go talk to the manager, who incidentally was expediting and the one who let the food go out in the first place, and heaven knows what was said, but he obviously didnt want to be bothered. She finally came back - 10 minutes minutes later - and we asked for the check. She got no tip and a note on the bottom of the receipt.

Unfortunately I can no longer return to this place of business. The food is great, but the customer service has finally gotten to me to the point of no return, and it saddens me because this is a local business. Today, we waited 30 mins for our bill, and of course, the waitress didnt come back to check on us for refills, didnt ask how our food was, nothing. After attempting to flag down another waiter (who told us they were having issues in the kitchen), saying hed get it for us, and also forget to bring us the bill...our waitress finally came and threw the bill on the table, and didnt even say "thanks for coming in". She received no tip. Calling in and picking up food is also a timely process, even though they say it will be ready 10 "10-15min" - when you get there, you wait for at LEAST 10min for someone to notice you - both times a cook had to summon someone from across the eatery to come assist me. I dont understand how a business who has clearly received so many complaints about their customer services has yet to improve.. I would rather spend my money on fresh, organic food elsewhere - 24 Carrots and Pomegranate Cafe (both in the area) are worth it. Dont waste your time or money at Hillside Spot.

So we were in the area to check it out and stopped here because of the reviews. Totally justified. It was a little slow when we got here, so I dunno if its the norm, but our server was super friendly and laid back. Talked to us about the coffee and his favorites. Speaking of, the coffee was a local roast. Im a dark roast guy, but even with it being on the lighter side it was good. As we waited I was checking out the beer selection (conveniently located on shelves scattered about the place) and Im looking forward to coming back for some. These guys are clearly passionate about their brews. Finally we come to the whole reason for the five stars. I got the chilaquiles and oh man, that salsa Verde. Its just right with the vinegar to smoke to spice ratio. My wife got a breakfast burrito (which was good if a little bland) and after tasting mine had to get a side of the salsa to smother hers in. Looking forward to coming back in the evening and checking out all the other stuff I missed.

Absolutely love this restaurant. Came here since it opened and at least once a month sense. I have not had a single bad meal here. The charm of the place is wonderful. The open kitchen and look of it is awesome. I usually come before the dinner rush so dont know how it is when it is busy. We always order the guacamole appetizer. I do not think I have ever had a better guacamole. My favorites entrees are the Blue Sky Burger, any of the burritos , and the Croque Madame. The deserts are fantastic. I highly highly recommend the chocolate cake. Large slice perfect for 1-3 depending on how much you want. Tastes wonderful, you can tell the frosting is homemade. In fact you can tell that everything in the restaurant is made to order and nothing is frozen. Highly highly recommend coming for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. Any time of day it is wonderful.
