There is nothing fancy about this Ghent treasure, but this place is nothing to be underestimated. The name says is all-- "No Frills." A bread basket served before the meal is a restaurant frill. You wont find that here. Order the stuffed mushrooms or crab dip as an appetizer instead. You dont come here for champagne, but you ought to come for a Norfolk Canyon pale ale served with a frosty glass. Speaking of the hoppy stuff, they cook with NCPA and infuse it into a creamy, tangy gravy that will make your head spin. My favorite is the Hot Brown, which showcases classic diner fare as well as local ingredients. Have you ever had shaved Surry country ham atop shredded cheese, that luscious Norfolk Canyon Pale Ale gravy, blanketing grilled chicken filets over toasted sourdough points? Its my favorite, and it comes with two sides. This entree will feed you for 3 meals. The grande nachos, smoked salmon BLT and wraps will tantalize your taste buds. Once youre completely stuffed from your delicious meal, saunter on down Colley and browse the Naro Extended Cinema collection, or round out your evening with a coffee and pastry from Fair Grounds, or a yogurt from Skinny Dip-- all within walking distance. This restaurant can be the foundation of your trip to Ghent, or, a rondezvous point before taking the tide downtown to Macarthur Mall, Waterside, or Harbor Park.

My son and I were visiting ODU and were looking for good reasonably priced food. We stumbled upon this place- glad we did. We arrived probably just before the Friday night rush. We were quickly seated in the porch area- the perfect atmosphere. All of the food was very tasty. They had fresh buttermilk dipped clam strips on special. They were outrageously delicious! They were paired with amazing cornbread as well. Based on those and my sons meal I wouldve given a five star rating. Two things prohibited that. 1. The bathroom alcove had a leaking ceiling which spilled over into the bathrooms making them musty and kind of dangerous- they had a bus tray "catching" the water but a sopping wet rug underneath. I realize it was busy but if I had gone to the restroom first I wouldve turned on my heels and not experienced that fantastic meal. 2. Although it turned out that our server was fantastic, it took a very long time initially to get our drink order, then our drinks then to order. She did redeem herself though because her personality was great! Very engaging. The parking was a little tricky too, but thats kind of to be expected. If youre in town, I recommend this restaurant. Hopefully theyll get that leak taken care of by the next visit for me

I went here because I was craving fish and chips, the other reviews were up and down so I figured Id give it a try. The fish that they fry is flounder. It was VERY heavy for fish and chips. They gave me a large portion, which was nice but I couldnt finish it; which is rare for me to not finish my fish and chips. The batter was really light and thin, not that flavorful. Overall it was just ok, I wouldnt order it again. My husband had the Cajun Grilled Catfish - Grilled sourdough, lettuce, tomato, Parmesan pepper dressing. He also thought it was ok, not flavorful either. The sandwich needed the dressing. The service was great. Our server was very friendly, patient and helpful. I would come back here to try their buffalo fried shrimp, we saw many people ordering it. They gave large portions and it looked delicious. There is ample parking here in their lot. This restaurant is family friendly with a diner experience.

This place has been hit or miss for me the few times Ive been there. The service is always wonderful and the staff is friendly, efficient and very attentive to patrons needs! Prices are right on in my belief, and I think theres a good price point for everyone no matter what youre looking to eat or drink. I will say the salads are pretty spot on here and I honestly dont think you could go wrong with many if not all of the choices! I would highly recommend you try a salad for lunch or dinner here; fair prices and large portions. However, I will say all of this with a side a caution, I personally have tried a couple of sandwiches here and I believe the fish and chips and was less than pleased, especially with the sandwiches. Just dry cheap bread and okay meats. So to sum it up love the salads, but not much else. Still would recommend you explore the menu for yourself and give this place a try!

I love this place. Ive never had a bad meal here. Its over priced for a sandwich or soup etc, but they give you a lot. More than one person can usually eat. If you split a sandwich with a friend and get a soup, the price is actually very reasonable. I usually just take home left overs and have lunch for the next day. If you figure it that way, its not bad. But the food itself.... so good. Worth the money. This is one of those places you hit on a lazy Sunday afternoon just to try something new and wonderful. Its comforting because you just know, whatever you order is going to be great. One of those iconic norfolk restaurants thats always been there and when you cant decide where to go you think, "oh yeah, I havent been there in a while." And you know youre going to get something good... you may not no what, but it will be good.

This was absolutely delicious. We had the drunken cheese bread appetizer- even the kids scarfed it down, despite red onion (which was mild)! The kids burgers were gigantic and my blackened tuna, shrimp, and grits was to die for. We stayed in VA Beach oceanfront but met up with a friend at the Norfolk location. We will absolutely visit again on future vacations. The whole menu made my mouth water and I had a hard time choosing. Two bathrooms: family bathroom with changing table or gender neutral bathroom. Love it. The staff accompanied our group of four adults and three kids effortlessly and the waitress did not ignore the babys mom to make googoo eyes at the baby, which is a rarity (as moms of babies know). Amazing all around.

First time diner. Came with a friend who loves the place and now I know why that is. I enjoyed the Grilled Chicken Pita--lots of tender grilled chicken strips and grape tomatoes, and a soft buttery pita. The vegetable and faro soup was thick and delicious as well. The best part about the visit was the service. Becca, our waitress was phenomenal. Quite possibly the most attentive waitress Ive ever had. It was a busy Saturday evening but she never neglected to refill our water glasses or bring condiments to the table. She did all of the little things in addition to checking on us and ensuring everything was tasty and as ordered. Great food, great people. Highly recommend No Frill.

The specials are great!!! The music isnt too loud. I always come to Norfolk to visit and were always out to try new places to eat. And I must say that this place blows all of the other places out of the water. We were only there for lunch, and decided to have the specials, which were amazing. I forgot the name of my dish (its below in the pictures). The only complaint I had was that there was so much oil in the dish that I ordered that It was also sickening. But there was straight up pepperoni in there, so what else should I have expected. The oyster stew with blackened salmon was bomb as well. The service was great, btw.
