The Black Cat Coffeehouse is something you dont see too much anymore. Its a coffeehouse thats laid back, relaxed, personal, friendly, and unique. Most other coffeehouses these days have become super-trendy and they attract a more elite crowd. While the Black Cat (BC) has an excellent atmosphere, the building is in need of repairs and ventilation is poor. The kitchen is small, so when there are large amounts of orders, the food can take a while to reach the customers table. The taste of the coffee could use improvement, but the espresso is outstanding! Also, the mochas and chai tea lattes have great quality ingredients, but are too sweet. The BC strives towards sustainability, using organic and sometimes locally grown foods when possible. The food is good tasting, although slightly pricey for some items. For the Ashland area, I give this establishment an A-. As far as coffee shops go in general, I would give it a C. In either case, the BC offers a unique and friendly environment which is becoming increasingly difficult to find in most areas.

I am from Ashland and I always try to make an effort to stop by this place while I am visiting. I have been a customer since high school and it continues to be just as good as I remember. The staff is friendly and attentive to your needs. As for the coffee, I must say that they probably serve one of the best mochas that I have ever had. I would also recommend this place for a quick lunch or afternoon snack (they have delicious nachos, by the way.) Although there are some strange customers from time to time, it is a great place to meet up with some friends or get some work done. As a side note, you may also encounter an array of liberal leaning petitions, but it isnt anything that will detract from your experience.

These guys have decent coffee and food. They certainly go out of their way to provide organic, healthy options for lunch with fresh produce. The interior decor is really cool with high ceilings and unique art displays. The staff is okay but very "laid back". They are of the limo lib ilk and turn their nose up at those who are in a rush to get to work which I find annoying.

Always comfortable, friendly. I was examining the teas on their shelf full of sale items- I didnt know those canisters were for employees only. I just wanted to smell the tea before I ordered one. Im so sorry! Thank you for being polite and not kicking me out.

Great coffee and wonderful egg breakfast sandwich! I love that they state they are not fast food - so be prepared to wait 15 minutes for your sandwich. However, it will be well worth it - I promise! I go here every time I am in town for business.

A nice, comfortable atmosphere. You can choose from traditional cafe seating, or lounging in a more *home* like setting. The staff is really down to earth. The food is great, the nachos are my favorite! If you like a nice coffee, try the Myan!

Every time we go to our cabin, we go here. Great coffee house. Although, I did not enjoy the "socialist" political handouts. Just be a coffee shop...No need for that political agenda crap. Wouldve given a better rating if not for that.

Great coffee, delicious (vegetarian, vegan, and carnivorous) food, and - critically - strong wifi! Worth the drive, whether youre coming up from Mellen or down from Bayfield.

My friend and I used to go there every weekend. We would drink about a gallon of coffee each and play 20 games of chess in a row. We alway got a plate of nachos--delicious!
