Um this is not authentic Latin food at all. Saying this is authentic Puerto Rican food is like saying chipotle is authentic Mexican food. As a Puerto Rican I think Im pretty in tune with what authentic Puerto Rican food taste like. And for the price we paid for 3 separate entrees, we literally turned it into 1 entree. Portions were just abysmal, and Im not talking from the perspective of an obese person who expects massive amounts of food! To have paid 50 bucks for the smallest spoon of rice and a couple of spoons of pork! The pork was so salty, I was suddenly attacked by an onslaught of high blood pressure. No difference in sodium content than a Big Mac from McDonalds. Youd get better rice at a cheap Chinese spot. The black beans tasted like they were opened from a can and dumped on top of the rice. The mahi tacos were dryer than buckets of sand from the beach down the road. Am I making my point? All in all it was just awful. I never write reviews but I just had to save the next poor soul who thinks this would be a good spot to get your Spanish fix. Save your money, it isnt.

About time we had such a place in Tidewater. I am Cuban and a very good cook so it takes a lot to impress me. Edwin Padilla--owner/chef does just that with his mix of Cuban and Puertorican cuisine. He has fun with his creative and delicious Latin fusion specials. Everything in the menu is outstanding. The Mofongo with crushed green plantains and different meats or veggie combos is wonderful; the portions are generous--enough to take home for lunch the next day; the prices reasonable. Excellent Cuban sandwich--good to take to the beach just a block away and maybe share with a friend. Amazing "ropa vieja"--shredded beef dish. This is the place for different forms of a culinary guilty pleasure--roast pork. His Mojitos are almost as good as mine! Walking into this place to the fragrant scents of the cuisine of my homeland, the warm and accommodating waitstaff, Edwin and his lovely wife and the Latin music is heaven to me. I have been a loyal fan since Mojito Cafe opened and have taken at least 50 of my gringo friends there--they all loved it too. Check it out--que le aproveche!

What a wonderful find just one block off the beach on Pacific Avenue. Tucked in on the corner adjacent to a Subway restaurant, the Mojito Cafe had some of the best Latin cuisine weve had. This small but quaint restaurant with its Caribbean decor offers a relaxing and nice respite from all the fast food chain restaurants in the area. The 25 minute wait for a table for two was well worth it. The menu was filled with Latin cuisine favorites. I had the Ropa Viejo entree which was fantastic. The shredded lean beef lightly marinated, over black beans and yellow rice was delicious. We also had the Churrasco con Chimichurri which is a marinated skirt steak with similar rice and beans trimmings. A lean and flavorful cut of steak which is a house standard. This is a great place for a dinner date or a get together with friends and family. The prices are reasonable and the wait and kitchen staff were polite, respectful and professional. I could eat here every night! Dont let the exterior fool you. Come on in for a great meal and a good time.

The hostes that greets you at the front door is nothing but unprofessional. My family and I were looking to have a really nice dinner at this location and was told that it would be an hour wait. After some time we went to check on how long the wait would still be and the hostes told us to just wait. In the mean time a few other smaller tables were seated. We were then told that the reasturant does not allow you to have a stroller and that they only have one high chair that was currently being used until who knows when. The lady stated that they are not a restaurant for children so oh well. Another couple also has spoken to her while we were waiting and came out stating that the only thing the rude lady had to say was to get the stroller out because it was not allowed. I would not even recommend attempting to give this place a chance. The staff (well the greeter at the door) are very Nasty and unprofessional. Hopefully this company will close down for good.

Honestly this place may have good food but I simply never got a chance to even enter the restaurant. We were greeted by a someone at the door and asked how long for a table of 8. The hostess answered it was a small place and it might be up to an hour wait. I get it its a small place. So I suggested to split out party in half so we could be seated faster. Two parties of four. Immediately the confusion and the barrage of excuses as to why that wasnt possible started. The hostess said that she would have to ask the manager to see if that was even possible that she couldnt accommodate us. Her final reason for not being able to seat us was we had a baby carrier and those werent allowed inside. It became evident that she simply wasnt interested in helping us. But the nice couple who drove up in the Porsche got seated immediately. Go figure. Like I said this place might have good food but never got a chance to even get inside

Obviously homemade, but not in a good way. And expensive. We bought 5 of their entrees. All of the food arrived lukewarm to cool except for the side of fried plantains, which was good, but hard to screw up. The rice in all the dishes was cool and undercooked. The pulled pork was over salted, and being cool, not so good. The ropa vieja was dry. The shrimp were good. The steak plate ($18) was a big disappointment to me, but my wife liked it. Dessert: tres leches cake was totally dry. The flan was marginal (my gringa wife makes a way better flan) I was here in December and maybe they had a bad night, but there were so many problems that I doubt that this restaurant could be decent on a good night. In the end we ate all the food but I felt misled by all the great reviews.

I had a shrimp entree that was AHHHmazing! The bed of rice, beans, and asparagus were also just as good. I literally cleared my plate.....which never happens. There was a little wait, but it was well worth it. The bartender made me a mojito that was perfect and FRESH! Finally, a drink served the right way. Not to mention it is affordable. I live in newport news but I would make the drive again and again. Oh let me not forget the home made caramel cheesecake! I couldnt get enough of this place. Love, love, love!!!!!! I dont usually write reviews, but the owner, managers, COOKS, and/servers here deserve the credit! Thank you for a wonderful experience. Foodgasm fo show

Decided to give it a try with my wife while on business travel. Indeed it is a VERY small place (so get there before 7pm). Only about 36 seats but dont let that fool you. I went back for dinner the next two nights. Their handmade Mojitos are excellent - no Sprite or corn syrup. Over my three visits I had the Ropa Vieja, Skirt steak with Chimichurra and Cubano - all were quite good! Ask for the habanero dipping sauce. Also had the Chorizo and Empanada appetizers. Location is perfect... any closer to the masses and youll never get a seat! Probably 1 of the top 10 best kept secrets in Virginia Beach.
