It sad when people go on the internet and make false statements about an establishment. I have been going to De Rican chef for 6 years and have never seen a manager disrespect a customer. As a matter of fact all the managers are friends of mine and would never say que pasa to a customer who has a complaint. As for the food taking over an hour they do make the things from scratch. This restaurant is not a fast food restaurant. If you went on a busy day you simply have to wait your turn. As far as the manager not wearing a uniform that explains to me what type of establishment you frequent. Managers in fast food restaurants wear uniforms. The ones in upscale dinning restaurants wear different clothes from the wait staff. As far as your comment and I quote "These puerto ricans need to learn some custom and courtesies or go back to their Island." If you are so raciest why did you go to this Puerto Rican restaurant to start with? The Puerto Rican island is part of the USA which by the way was built by immigrants and continues to be. I always have the seafood mofongo and it is outstanding but I have honestly had everything on this menu and would recommend it to any one. My mother who is picky and doesnt eat any ones food always has alcapurria and the whole red snapper which is full with flavor.

Well I had gotten a very good review from a friend who also enjoys eating "out of the box" so I went ahead and tried it hoping it was similar to Lolas in Norfolk... HORRIBLE. I went all out and decided to try Seafood Mofongo - ($27) and I was given a plate with 2" of plantain crust topped with 2 halves of over cooked rubbery lobster, 5-6 rubber/hard/dry shrimp, and 4 good clams. all doused in garlic butter/broth. It was terrible and very disappointing that the item that the waitress continued to push after mentioning that it was my first time. I am sooo disappointed in the quality of the food.... especially at the price I paid. Not to mention, this was at 1:30pm and the meal took 1.5H. Ill be driving back to Norfolk to Lolas next time Im looking for fantastic Cuban/Puerto Rican cuisine.

My review comes from multiple visits at different times and days of the week & weekend. - Food - Good food, fresh and authentic. The Rican Chef has a great menu and serve enough food to feed up to two people in many cases. The food has great amazing taste and worth every penny. They do have a few things that need some serious improvement. Service - Their service is extremely slow and music is some times to loud. Service wise, their waiters are slow and the kitchen seems to follow. They do not pay close attention to customers and are always chatting. In regards to the music, you cant have a conversation with the table without raising your voice way to much. These two negatives are enough to kill their business and their future could be jeopardized if changes arent implemented.

THE AUTHENTIC PUERTO RICAN FOOD! The Food was perfectly done. I had the mofongo al ajillo and my girlfriend had the Bistec encebollado and I can say it was the best Puerto Rican food we have had since coming to the U.S. and I have lived in NY and CT and ate in restaurants in D.C., PA and MD since joining the Navy I will go as far as the best mofongo Ive had ever had including PR. The plantains were fresh the appetizers where quick and music and service was perfect. I server Luigi was exceptional. Between the food, the mojitos that felt like I was drinking from the Bacardi factory, and the vibe of the restaurant me and my girlfriend was really feeling like we never left Puerto Rico, that is until our check came. Still I will give them 4 and a half stars if possible

Well the food was great, I liked it. Except for their special beef that comes with one of the platter dishes, it was hard, unedible, and chewy. For a minute I thought it was octopus. The reason I gave such a low review was because their service was HORRIBLE! The waitress was racist. We were sitting there for at least 15 minutes waiting for our check, and we finally saw her as some Spanish lady walked into the door. Our waitress stopped everything she was doing and talked to her and completely ignored us for another 5 minutes. We were the only table in the restaurant and the service was horribly slow. The food is alright, depending on what you get. Do not recommend unless you have all day to sit and wait for anything.

We went early afternoon on a Wednesday. We were seated right away & waited on promptly. Our waiter was both well mannered & well groomed. He was very helpful in answering any all questions I had in regards to what was what & how it would be served. I am not very familiar with Puerto Rican food. My husband however is from Puerto Rico. All our food was served as ordered & in a timely manner (my husband ordered a lot of different things). I have to say, everything that we ordered was very good. My husband was very happy that it was authentic Puerto Rican food like he grew up with. We will definitely go back! We were so pleased we gave the waiter 20% tip. He deserved it! Great experience!

Let me start off by saying that Ive been here many times and as always, the food was delicious! The staff is always friendly, enthusiastic, and eager to please. The reason for my 4 stars versus 5 is simply the decor. I understand the restaurant went under a Makeover with Restaurant Impossible to attract more diverse clientele. While I applaud them for their efforts, I must respectfully disagree with their choice of style. This place used to have an authentic look. Both rugged and somewhat stylist. Sadly, the restaurant has lost its Puerto Rican soul. Although I admit that I will return for the food, it simply will not be as often and it will be to go.

First time at DeRican chef, Food was good and delicious, very authentic Puerto Rican Latin cuisine. The problem that they have is the service, Im trying to be nice, but the service SUCK!!! I have to wait for the server for 15 minutes, after I told another server that I was waiting for her. Our server came in and we order our food. Genesis, our server didnt act like one. They brought our food and we did the have plates yet in the table. Bottom line the service need to be improve otherwise they will lose customers. I dont recommend it to any one that is looking for a 5 star service. I ask for water and she forgot it.

If you want authentic Puerto Rican food then come here! The food is excellent and great family oriented restaurant, but the service is extremely slow or at least for me it was. I called in 20 minutes before...a Cuban sandwich to-go (nothing else) and waited at least an additional 45-50 minutes inside the restaurant at the little bar before I was given my food. I truly that pressed to try the food that I waited and the food was great, but I wouldnt want to do it ever again. Perhaps, Ill give them one more try in case its not their norm (hopefully).
