Its easy for a vegan, health conscious urban dweller to judge a place to Southern Kitchen and youd have every right to. However, if you want some good, ole unhealthy southern food, theres no better place. Its a two hour drive from DC and its nestled in a very small, historic Virginia village (New Market). When you walk in, the green bar and cushion bar stools and deer heads on the walls will scream Virginia. The green low booths will seal the deal! The servers are super friendly. Theyll ask you how you are, throw a southern wink at you, and always come by to check on you. Theyll tell you their daily specials including what pie they have in the back. I ordered the chicken tender sandwich, which is off mend, but good if you like a fried chicken sandwich. The cole slaw on the side didnt seem homemade, but still good. At the end, I ordered the peanut butter chocolate pie and it was sooooo worth it! If you can afford a few extra calorie, stop by!

Ill never go back. Ordered 1 egg over, yolk broken and cooked. Got broken and uncooked. Two bites of white: $1.75. Ordered home fries. Assumed theyd be cooked with peppers and onions. Nope. Just chunks of flavorless potatoes, some not cooked. $2.50. Didnt order toast but got it anyway. Took one bite. Loaded with margarine (I eat organic). Coffee: not so good. Total with tip: $7.62 for a few bites of undercooked potatoes and lousy coffee. Cashier asked gentleman before me how everything was. Didnt ask for my opinion, so I didnt give it. "When a man gives his opinion, hes a man. When a woman gives her opinion, shes a b---h. - Bette Davis. Ladies, they dont care what you think or what you want. Take what they give you, leave a nice tip and get lost. And, although I went to the bathroom when I walked in, I had to go as soon as I ate and am now in the next gas station up the road. Should have used my Burger King coupon.

Lets keep it simple and get to the facts. Decor is good and staff was nice. The food is nothing like what I would expect. The quality is not there. The price is to high for the food quality. I ordered Chicken Fried Steak. It was warm at best. The so called gravy was awful. Another user mentioned it was horrible. A jar of gravy is better. Gravy is easy to make and. The Mac and Cheese had no flavor. You call yourself southern. These are staples of southern cooking. FAIL My wife ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. Is that really southern? She liked her wrap, however the fries were not cooked. My son wanted a grilled cheese. That is simple and was done right. Nothing special with the chips it came with. All in all, low grade food and would not recommend. We opted for McDonalds McFlurries for desert. Was not going to risk it.

Having been to Southern Kitchen several times over the past few years, I think the SK can be best described as somewhat of a "tourist trap" establishment...all though I do believe this assessment is a bit harsh, I think it is essentially true. For the most part, the food is pretty good, nothing too fancy, but "it is, what is it" - that being "down home" country food. The food itself is essentially low-end commercial restaurant food, however the prices are very high for this type of "down home" establishment in my opinion. Overall, SK is a pretty mediocre place to eat, and considering its relatively high prices, it is not one of my top spots to eat at in the area...but it will do from time-to-time...

A very refreshing experience in a laid back classic diner atmosphere and with top notch service! The food was amazing, I had the famous fried chicken and their made in house coleslaw, plus some apple pie to take home that was to die for! I didnt wait more than 6 minutes for my food and the best part was the wait staff. They were quick with suggestions, happy to talk with you and get to know you, and always asking if everything was alright. You know, doing theyre jobs. It was a refreshing experience and I will be back

Always great food!!! The wait staff is excellent and more than courteous!! They are put their customers first, and with a smile on their faces!!! There are lots of "regulars" that frequent Southern Kitchen, and these folks are treated like members of the family!!! The fried chicken is fantastic!!!! I highly recommend stopping by and treating yourself and your family and friends to a wonderful meal. Thank you, Southern Kitchen a great meal and the best service possible!!!!

I had two things Ive never tried before, and loved both: the peanut soup and the country ham sandwich. If you also have never tried these, they are a must. I love some good home cookin and soul food, and thats exactly what youll find here. Ive been here a few times on my way to and from Harrisonburg, and every time, the do not fail to show amazing hospitality and serve amazing food. This is truly a diamond in the rough.

Southern home cooking, and the atmosphere is friendly like you would hope to find the country. Ive been stopping here as the midway between home in Northern VA and "Grannys house" in Roanoke since I was a kid, and it hasnt changed and is the feel good kind of place that brings back the memories. Fried chicken livers are the best ive had anywhere... consistently pleasing year after year.

The food is OK, but this restaurant is living off of reputation more than quality. They definitely overcharge for the quality of the food you are getting, and is usually recommended by either locals who have been going there for 40 years...or by people who havent been in many "country-style restaurants". Good for a once-in-a-while visit...but not a place I would frequent.

You wanna talk about cool? This place is it! Built in 1955, its like time stands still in here. Its like a time capsule, with the 1950s neon sign out front and everything. My food was great and my service was great, but I could just stand there and stare at that jukebox and the original soda fountain behind that amazing formica countertop all day long! Too cool!

It was a very nice Dinner! Couldnt have asked for better service .. my son and I got fried chicken and it was amazing .. my hubby got the hot roast beef sandwich with fries and gravy .. he said it was delicious! .. my youngest son got chicken noodle soup and Mac n cheese .. may not sound like the best combination but he loved it! .. And our Waitress was really nice!

Ive been going here since I was born. The food is just as good as it always was. Itll always remind me of my mom. Also, maybe if you "eat organic," a diner with southern style food isnt up your alley. There is nothing about this restaurant that pretends to be uppity but they do know their eggs when they are ordered (spoken, phrased) correctly.

Best food/fried chicken on the planet earth. Chicken liver like it is supposed to be. We HATE you Southern Kitchen, because we are back in New Mexico and we cant eat your food daily. We are having withdrawal, Jones-ing like crack addicts for your chicken. Best hidden gem EVER! Maybe lucky for us, so we dont end up weighing 500 lbs.
