The food is 5 stars but the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. First, the food is absolutely delicious. The pancakes are the best Ive ever eaten. It keeps me coming back and is why Im giving the place 4 stars despite its other lackluster attributes. What I dont love about the place: 1. They dont take cards, just cash or check. Thats absurd in 2017. 2. Dont ask for an extra plate unless you want to be charged for it. The first time we went, we asked for an extra plate for our baby to eat off and then realized when we got the bill that they had charged us two dollars for it! Just seems a little stingy, especially as their prices are a little on the higher side already. 3. There is always a huge line on weekends and little waiting space inside. I waited 45 minutes one Saturday morning. I now try to go on weekday mornings only. 4. The waitstaff is not rude, but not what I would describe as friendly either. They dont crack smiles, and overall the atmosphere is more snooty than inviting, in my opinion. Dont expect a friendly southern breakfast experience. This place is very Charlottesvillian in its attitude. 5. The Decor is a old and dingy-looking. But thats probably deliberate. I do appreciate the books and toys they put out for kids to play with. In spite of all this, Im craving those pancakes , so Im going to have to go back for more!

On an early (8 am) Saturday morning, we ate at Bluegrass Grill. It was not crowded at this time. Eggs Benedict had a Hollandaise sauce (passable) served over a thick slice of ham, a very thin layer of something in the bread family and a nicely poached egg. The 2 eggs "scramble" resembled an overcooked omelet with a 1/2 inch layer of rubbery cheese in the middle (described on the menu as cheddar). The overall texture of this dish was unpleasant. The cheese grits were ok, somewhat mushy. The grits at Boars Head are out of this world; the grits at Bluegrass are not in the same class. The service was adequate though I did overhear a server at another table (not our server) provide an excellent description of some of the menu items, engage with the customers as to their food likes and interests, and offer recommendations based on their preferences. Wish we had had that server. As noted in other reviews, it is a cash or check only establishment.

Went here for a good hearty southern breakfast with my boyfriend. First of all you have to bring a magnifying glass to read the tiny "cash only" sign out front. Food wise first issue was vegetatian biscuits and gravy, we asked for sausage to be added. The next issue were shrimp and grits which were runny and filled with garlic to the point were it was inedible and sent back. Next we tried the biscuits & gravy. The buscuits were stale and wheat which is counter intuitive to an indulgent dish. The gravy with sausage was redeemable and kept it from being sent back. My boyfriends dish was simple two eggs, home fries and toast. His only complaint was the unbuttered, cold bread they served as toast. Their chocolate covered candy bacon was not chocolate but rather a cold piece of bacon coated in sugar crystals somewhat like the raw sugar. Try another place, personal recommendation.

My boyfriend and I saw good reviews here so decided to try this place out at about noon on a weekday. It was fairly but not horribly busy. We were seated pretty quickly, but after ordering waited almost an hour for our meals. I waited about half an hour before getting a coffee refill. My vegetable hash was good, but my boyfriends tofu scramble was very bland, and his potatoes were burnt. The waitress at one point asked the women behind us if they were ready to order, and then walked away after they said yes which was strange. When they complained the waitress muttered under her breath within earshot of us about how rude they were being for expecting service. We didnt receive a check promptly and ended up going to the register to ask for it. The entire experience was disappointing.

Expect to wait to get a table. We waited almost an hour, but the food is 100% worth it. The pairings are divine, just the right amount of sweet and savory, with fairly large portions. I ordered the Hungry Norman and good lord, it was absolutely phenomenal. My table also got The Duke, biscuits and gravy, and Bananas Foster Pancakes. We all shared with each other. Everything was so delicious. The orange juice is fresh squeezed. The chai is perfection. The home fries are more like roasted potatoes, but the best roasted potatoes Ive ever eaten. As far as atmosphere, it is a very small space with eclectic mix of vintage finds and decor. You wait for your table outside, so they provide ice water and cups as you wait. All in all, I would give it a 10/10.

Best breakfast place in Charlottesville! They have a perfect mix of creative dishes you wouldnt find elsewhere as well as the classics youd expect. They cater to all kinds of dietary needs and different tastes. You get very generous sized portions of good quality food. The staff are friendly and efficient, they work really hard to make the service as quick as possible and they make sure your coffee cup is never running low! Prices are reasonable... Bacon is HEAVENLY... Theres a reason why this place usually has a crowd of people waiting to get in! Get there early and bring cash. You wont be disappointed!

A friend took me here because he said the food was great...when I first saw the place I was kind of taken aback because its sort of like a hole in the wall - nothing fancy, thats for sure BUT the food is absolutely THE BEST Ive ever tasted! The combinations the owner puts together are pure delight and for the first time I understand what gourmets mean when they speak of undertones & depth in food. The food at the Bluegrass Grill has mega-flavor and depth and your taste buds cant believe the treat youre giving them. It is absolutely to die for. Without a doubt, THE BEST FOOD in Charlottesville!

My wife and I eat breakfast here almost every week. It is true that you often have to wait a while to get a table, especially on Saturdays (Hint: the counter in the back is first-come, first-served -- otherwise just leave your name on the list that is on your left right as you walk in and wait to be seated) But the food is great. My favorites are their bacon, their home fries, and their French toast. The orange juice is real, actual maple syrup is available, and the coffee is from expert-roaster Shenandoah Joes. The quality brings us back every time.

Great Food. Thats about it. There are so many things that are so wrong about how they operate, I dont know where to begin. First of all, what restaurant in their right mind doesnt take credit or debit cards in 2014? Everything looks like it wasnt cleaned in a while. Their policy not allowing for take outs on the weekends is incredibly terrible for a business. I find it unwise that they are not open on Mondays. Again, if you want good food they are awesome, but if you want great customer service you dont want to go to this restaurant.

Worst service ever. We were waited on by Arthur, the rudest person we have ever had to the displeasure of being served by. He was abusive and acted like it was a great honor four us to be served by him. He told us after asking if the eggs could be cooked so they werent runny, that they do not do special orders & if we didnt like it there were plenty of other people waiting to take our table.Needless to say, none of us will ever eat there again & we are all telling everyone we know about the terrible service.
