A packed restaurant on a cold rainy random Tuesday night in downtown Burlington?!?! I must stop and partake! Normally Im not the guy who waits 30 to 40 minutes to sit for a meal, it almost invariably sets the restaurant up for failure to meet unnecessary expectations; but out of sheer curiosity to have a packed house on this night I had to stop... It should be noted that the hostesses had a dubious task as the entry way was flooded on a rainy night there was no where to hide the people. So admirable work and it was fine for me, and Im sure on evenings with more pleasant weather the spill over to the quaint outside area would be fine. So how did it fare??? The food, SO GOOD! I can definitely now see the popularity of the place, however still not sure why this particular night was so overly busy but it was worth the wait which is definitely a challenge given the anticipation that inevitably builds. The menu was succinct which at first was a little surprising given its a pub style (really a few levels of above that, but its clearly designed in that vein). The menu features a selection of great burgers and main plates. I recommend the cheddar ale soup as a place to start to warm the inners; I hear its a staple since they opened. Overall a delicious menu with well prepared local foods with an up twists on simple dishes, like kale butternut sqaush chow-chow as an accompaniment to a fried chicken dish. Overall the menu scores, and has enough variety to please the masses. The beer menu is local and well done, and they had a surprisingly good wine selection as well. The spot itself is right in the heart of downtown Burlington and Im sure the level of popularity means its always boisterous inside. It seems to fit its style well, making it a perfect place for a dinner with good friends with lots of laughs. Its definitely a casual setting with an upscale college crowd. Parking is again tougher due to the downtown locale but its managed well and I have not found a problem finding a spot to park whenever Ive come down here. The staff while laid back was surprisingly knowledgeable about the menu and really efficient with the service given the pace of the scene and volume they obviously do. Overall I strongly recommend the spot seems to play well for the area and it seems that the hype is the truth. Enjoy a burger and good beer and bring some friends, you wont be disappointed

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Farmhouse Tap & Grill in Burlington VT. Every time I visit Vermont, I try and go to at least one different restaurant along with my old favorites. This time The Farmhouse Restaurant was the choice for something new. It’s right off The Church Street Marketplace located at 160 Bank Street right in downtown Burlington. Easy to get to. I used Uber which was super convenient! Everything in the Church Street area is super close and fun. The location is perfect, the ambiance was amazing, we used Yelp’s “click ahead seating” and the table was ready by the time we got there. Now THAT was perfect timing. We had the onion rings for an appetizer and they were lightly breaded and delicious. I really wanted the fish and chips but when you go and look up the reviews, it didn’t really look like many people raved about it. What they DID, however, rave about was the pork burger. The Vermont Heritage Burger. I did not get the egg although my friend did. While they looked small, they were both very filling. Was it the best burger ever? I can’t say that. It was good, for sure. But at $16 I guess I had little higher hopes for it. And instead of the egg, they said I could substitute another topping … like bacon. “Sure, Bacon!” i said. It came with a single strip of bacon. The fries were good, the cole slaw was freshly made, the salad was nice and light – most of the meal was very good … it just wasn’t 5 STAR EXCELLENT. I wanted to absolutely love this place. And between the ambiance and the good beer selection (especially the local VT beers!) I absolutely would return. Would I order a $16 burger from The Farmhouse? Probably not.

As a traveling man who visits Burlington once a month...I ALWAYS, go here. Mostly for the beer selection since I am a craft beer guy. The draft, bottle and reserve cellar will crush any other business in the area. One thing I love is that you can order a full or half pour...Seem odd? not for many smarter establishments but seems non-existent for many New England places. Typical offerings are Hill Farmstead, Lawsons and other VT specific goodies that are rare. This is a place I would hangout for hours with friends or by my lonesome downstairs. Thats right, they have a cozy, underground lair that showcases a relaxed area with some sofas and a fireplace along with some tables for larger groups. Their food is fantastic and gravitate towards the farm to table or live local concept. I usually go for the cheese plate with some bread, but have had some of the salads which are fresh, crisp and unique. My favorites includes Golden Beets. Seriously, they are awesome and have me looking all over New England to get them... Located slightly off the Church Street traffic, this a gem for craft beer enthusiasts, couple getaways and social gatherings of any sort.

Sad to say I didnt go with the burger, I went with the fried chicken. It was the worst Ive ever had, and I mean that literally. Im still not sure what they did to it. When it was delivered to my table I didnt even recognize it as chicken. The three "packages" that I assumed were the chicken pieces, were not really breaded, but encased in some sort of shell, you had to break through this thick shell to find the meat. Once I found it, it was dry (even though it was dark meat). I choked it down till I couldnt take it anymore, trying to give it as much of a benefit of doubt as I could. Finally deciding it was no good. The worst Ive ever had. Bad choice number two - trying to salvage the dinner by ordering desert. I tried, I really did, how can anyone mess up apple pie I reasoned! I should have just asked for the check when I asked the waitress if the pie was served hot, she said no, that it was room temperature. Again Im too nice. She brought the pie and it was a bit cooler than room temp. It was not good. It was slimy and the oat topping was soft and wet. The taste was not there. I regret my order. I paid my $35 and left. Yuck!

A disappointment since last visit. Out of littleneck clams. Mussles are small, flavorless, smothered in some sort of Dijon dressing. Forgot the shrimp cocktail I ordered. Loud as hell. Sort of neglected to take dinner order, empty water and beer glasses abound here. Sitting over a tray of ice and empty mussel shells. Thank god there are leftover crackers from my friends steak tartar to munch as I am VERY hungry and getting no relief despite being here an hour. Im hopeful this is just a rough Monday night and not the beginning of a sustained downward trajectory. Heres to hoping the main course is more in line with reputation and expectation. Im trying desperately to not read too deeply into an unexpectedly busy Monday night. Third reminder and no shrimp cocktail. Finally did inquire on second drink orders. Dinner arrived... Ive given up on the shrimp cocktail and wont inflict myself further on this establishment; we will be out of their hair ASAP. Sad. Ill try again, next visit to Burlington and hope for a return to prior excellence.
