My boyfriend was super excited about this place, he had been looking at reviews and menus for several months. He finally got me to go and we ordered some food to go, he had the sesame beef, steamed rice, and hot sour soup, I had the jalapeno chicken, fried rice, and wonton soup. This was about 7:50 on Saturday, 2-21-2015 and we got back to our place about 8 and he started to eat his food. I opened my box and THE FIRST THING I PICKED UP TO PUT IN MY MOUTH HAD A LOOOOONG HAIR ATTACHED TO IT. Needless to say it grossed me out to no end. We drove back there right before they closed and I was as nice as I could be when I told him and he said he would remake the meal ASAP, which was really good since they were literally closing up. I showed him the hair and he said "sorry". But in the next breath he had the audacity to tell me that none of his chefs had any hair on their heads, they were all bald, as if to say it must have come from my head. I chose to let that go and not get into an argument with him since he was nice enough to remake my plate. We got back to our place with my "freshly" cooked meal and can you guess what happened.....YEP ANOTHER LOOOOONG HAIR, THIS TIME WRAPPED AROUND A JALAPENO!!!! I know that it was not the same plate I brought in since that was still sitting at the front counter, it was a new plate of the same item with the same FREAKING HAIRY PROBLEM. It now makes me wonder if their chefs have NO hair on their heads, what part of their body did those hairs come from???? For me this is the HOUSE OF NO JOY. UPDATE::: I took it back on Sunday 2-22-15 and the owner actually ACUSED me of placing both hairs in my meals. It did not matter to him that my hair is brown and both hairs were long and blonde, nor did it matter that both of those plates came back to him with NO FOOD MISSING, I would never eat from a plate with hair on it. He slammed the money for the food on the counter, actually making me fear for what this crazy man might do next. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE EVER. I am now on a mission to close their restaurant, no one should be treated the way that man treated me and I will see to it that he never does this again.

My family and I moved to San Antonio a year ago and have tried almost all of the Chinese Restaurants because we love Chinese food. Well it took us a while to find one that we liked. But we dont just like House of Joy WE LOVE IT. Everything we have gotten there has been more authentic and better tasting than any other Chinese restaurant in the San Antonio area we have been to--and trust me we have been to a lot of them. We just happen to stumble across this little restaurant one day when we had to visit the Bexar County Tax Office off of Bandera Road. We stopped in and got some take out and cannot stop going back. They have the best Egg Drop Soup I have ever tasted. We also love their Egg Rolls and Spring Rolls. And every entree we have ordered is perfect. Everything is always cooked fresh and tastes fresh. Their prices are extremely reasonable for the amount of food you receive. The staff is also just so pleasant to deal with. They are also quick at getting your order out to you. You dont have to sit and wait around forever like most places!! So anyone looking for an Excellent night out for Chinese or maybe just lunch should stop in and try it because I promise you 2 things---You wont regret it!! and you will go back for more!!! Karla Ferguson-Granger P.S. I have noticed on here that someone left a comment that "all of the nice comments must come from co workers or friends" and I will tell you that I dont know these people except from eating at their restaurant. We are from Virginia and just moved here a year ago. So that comment is completely false. Because we think ITS THE BEST!!! and we dont know them except for eating there.

I used to eat here often growing up when I lived in the neighborhood and it was pretty good. I was in the area with a coworker and decided we should eat there for lunch since its been years and I remember it being so good and everyone so friendly. My friend ordered sesame chicken and it was bright orange (like cheetos - not like I remember) and it was squishy and tasteless. I tried one and couldnt eat one piece. She even tried drowning it in soy sauce. By the time our waitress came around to leave the bill we needed to get going so there was no point in asking for something else to eat. I asked if they would take off the entree and just charge her for the soup and tea. The manager came over and said "We sell sesame chicken all day and no one complain". And that was that. She abruptly left our table and want back to chatting with some friends at another table. She did offer a to go box so we could take the nasty chicken with us. Worst experience and food ever! I left embarrassed and highly disappointed and will never return. I am sad to see how much it has changed in a few years.

Our office has ordered from House of Joy for years now. They arent the closest to us - but worth the drive. We always got great food, but the service was never there. Because we did take out it was not a big issue. However as soon as the new owner took over - we saw a huge difference in service. The place looks great - the food is awsome - and the service is wonderful. We use to laugh at the crabby old owner - calling the place House of Joy. But now the name fits perfectly - JOY is what you will get from the food and from the staff.

The food is bland and has no taste. They said the Mongolian beef was flavorful and kind of spicy... yeah right, I doubt they even have spices. Even the fried rice tasted like Uncle Bens, plain and grainy (I dont understand how a Chinese restaurant can have bad fried rice) I read all the reviews before I came here and thought it would be ok but I was very disappointed. I ordered 4 dinner items for take out and paid about $50. Overpriced, freezer aisle quality Chinese food... eggrolls were ok, portions were adequate and service was friendly.

Ive been eating here for the past 5 years, and the food is still made just as well as it was the first time i went. The owner is somewhat less than friendly, but the flavor and portions are more than enough to make up for it. As for the previous comment, regarding the illiterate gentleman that "waisted" his time and money on food that was hardly "eatible", I have no clue what happened in your case, but after having eaten here at least 60+ times over the past few years, i have never had a bad experience or meal.
