I lived in Lubbock for a few years when my wife was in law school at Texas Tech. There were not a lot of choices for barbecue. Our favorite spots were Rudys and Tom & Bingos BBQ. Tom & Bingos was included in the 2008 Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ list. They only smoke brisket, ham, and burgers though. DV featured them in a recent article on BBQ sandwiches. I only ate J & M Bar-B-Q & Catering once when we lived in Lubbock and thought it was good. We were in town visiting because the wifes family still lives in the LBK. I only had time for one BBQ joint on this trip so I had to make it count. When you walk in, you think you would order from the counter, but you actually order from the menu at a table. You do not get to see the meat cut in front of you. I ordered the three-meat with moist brisket, pork ribs, and German sausage. The sides I got were coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. The Certified Angus Beef logo was displayed everywhere on the menu so I assumed that they were using a better brisket. They were better off using a lower grade of beef. I ordered fatty and got lean. The waitress charged me for a quarter pound of moist to get my order "right." It was like eating dry pot roast with smoke for both types of brisket. There was no bark and the fat was rendered away and/or trimmed away. The moist fell apart when I picked up a slice. As you can see below, I ate everything but both cuts of brisket. The pork ribs were solid. The dry rub combined with the smoke made them tasty. The ribs were very tender. The commercial sausage was just okay. You could probably find something similar at the grocery store. Nothing special to note about the sides, but I did eat it all because I was hungry. I had no idea what to expect in this visit so I came in with an open mind. I am pretty sure I would not be going back to J & M Bar-B-Q & Catering even if I lived in Lubbock. I probably should have gotten the pulled pork instead of the brisket, but that is not how I do things around here. They trim away the fat off of the brisket before it is served. Why? Look elsewhere if you are ever in Lubbock, Texas and want some cue.

I just ate there 3/1/2012. It was wonderful . The selections, service and price (as I found out the next 3 days) they had a lot of smoked meats , everything from baby back ribs, to beef brisket, to smoked turkey and chicken, ham, pulled pork, chopped beef, and sausage. I sampled ribs, turkey, sausage, and ham. Excellent. Then the sides there has to be over 10 . Then to top it all off with peach and cherry cobbler. Hot with a scoop of ice cream . Wow . Bottom line . People should support this gem. It's a mom and pop shop that been around since 1986 . Then the price. I went to a chain on the south end of town. Paid over twice the price . And got half the quality . Newer and fancier doesn't mean better BBQ. J&M does BBQ right . Enjoy

I like places like this. Scratch that, I love places like this. I can remember way long ago when this was a pizza place! Im glad that Todd and his group have it now. I have only eaten ribs at this establishment and they were great. I was disappointed on Sunday night when I went to eat there and then I found that they were closed. Then on a second thought, its nice to see a place that has no issues closing down and enjoying their life and not chasing after a buck every chance they get. Todd has great food and great service at a great price.

Apon walking in all the tables were dirty. We sat for at least 10 minutes before we even got greeted. The waitress seemed very lost and confused. When the food arrived bread was molded and the ribs were literally burnt bones s the chicken was hard and cold. Staff didnt have any reaction to the molded bread or that we had to ask for refills that we were then told to wait for. Not a good experience at all. I will not be returning.

My husband and I just left here and we will not return. We both had the 2 meat dinner with 2 sides each...The food was a little cold when it came to us. The service was not good at all. Our waitress was friendly but not attentive. Then, when we went to pay, she had closed our ticket with someones elses order. Took then 20 minutes to get it straight. OH, and she forgot to get me my to-do drink.

Nice small BBQ place. You know you are in the right place right when you walk through the door and smell that deliciousness. Brisket, turkey, chicken, sauce, Mac and cheese, ribs all amazing. Everything is homemade here. Also the staff is very inviting and treats you like friends. Ordering the Cherry or Peach Cobbler is a must, this is important!

Great meal! Potato Salad was mustard based and had a nice tang to it. Mac n Cheese was some of the best Ive had and our picky kids both devoured it....Brisket was moist and husband said the pork spare ribs were the best he had ever had. We ordered two of their two meat plates and it fed all four of us and we had left overs.

Stood inside for more than five minutes before someone began taking our order, and then he wasnt paying attention and didnt complete the process. A manager stood behind the counter ignoring us as it happened. There were like 10 people working and not one of them wanted our business! We walked out. Pathetic service!!!

This joint has been over shadowed a bit by all the new places. But I still come back. Rustic and the food is old style BBQ. Staff is always very attentive. Ribs sometimes are hit and miss, but 90% of the time they are spot on. Long time restaurant here in Lubbock that deserves more love.

The pulled pork was very, very Dry no kind of taste or seasoning and very small portion.. The macaroni tasted weird.. It was waxy. If that is even a word. The only tasty side was the potato salad. For 12 bucks a plate I sure did expect more! Will just stick to Rudys !

Everything here is awesome. J&M catered our wedding, and even though it was totally affordable, our guests said it was the best bbq they ever had. They finished ALL of it. I was expecting to have leftovers for a week, but they didnt leave me a thing.
