I want so badly to like this place. I live on the square and I was so excited to have a new resturant to frequent. Unfortunately, Ive given them four tries and have never had any luck. The first time I went, they forgot to bring the sides with my dish. To have a waitress serve you a plate with no sides on it is frustrating; how do you not notice that theres nothing on a plate before you take it out? The second time was about the same. Slow slow service and they werent busy. I got my dinner, then my sides, our appetizers, and then my dinner salad, in that order. Another time, we were seated, waited 10 minutes to get a our drink order, I finally got up and wrangled a waiter who instead humoring me and taking a my drink order, told me flat out the he was not my server and that the guy in my section would be by soon to help us. After another five minutes, we just left. There were 2 other tables there that night, again, not like they were busy. My last straw was when I called them to ask what the kitchen hours were as we were looking to have a late-night dinner. I was told that they serve a full menu til 10p and then just burgers and sandwiches from 10p til 11p. Though he sounded quite confident and competent on the phone, we walked up there and got in at 10 after 10 and they refused us service. I explained the phone conversation and I was told I was wrong and that no one in the resturant would have told me that if I actually called. Basically called me a liar. I dont think its anything but awful service. No discrimination, my fiance and I are well-dressed people and Id like to think were both server-empathetic since we both worked in food service for so long. Just idiots. Like I say, I REALLY wanted to like the Abbey Inn because I like supporting local resturants on the square and we eat out in downtown about 4 times a week. Their food, though good, is not good enough for me to pop a blood vessel for putting up with the treatment of ther staff. Unfortunate.

I come back and I dont know why. Maybe its because in Denton there are only so many places to eat. If youre like me and you want to avoid going to chain restaurants your choices are slim. Because of this I end up going to places I know better to avoid. Today was one of those days. First of all, I cant believe how many "Excellent" reviews this place got!!! It seems very suspicious. The wait staff is the worst. When you walk in you can feel the tension in the air from the employees. They become overwhelmed too easily, if you asked them for something they act like your putting them out. The service is also very s l o w. Our server took thirty minutes to get our checks. Now for the atmosphere. Its dimly lit and everything is brown. I understand that they are going for a pub aesthetic but it feels more like they are trying to die something. The booth seats are wooden and very uncomfortable. They have some of their "merch" hanging on the wall as you walk in and its very tacky. Especially the quote on the shirts, "Lifes too short to drink crappy beer." How stupid is that? The food is always between mediocre and very bad. The vegetables come form frozen bags and the bread always tastes like its been left out. The onions on my salad are always old. Thankfully there are some new restaurants popping up that use fresh ingredients and hopefully some sort of standard with be placed. The only thing going for this place is the alcohol and the outside setting.

I ate at this restaurant 3 times. The first time I went here it was my choice. I got the fish and chips. it was the greasiest fish and chips I have ever had. Completely tasteless. Plus some idiots car alarm was going off outside of the business the whole time we were there. I got sick when back home. Fortunately I made it to the toilet in time. The second time I went it was for an office get together and I had no choice. I had the Banger on a Bun, which is nothing more than a hotdog on an inappropriately shaped bun that is marked up 600% with a small pile of red cabbage. It was edible. Somebody else in the group had a chicken sandwich and these disgusting things called Scotch eggs as an appetizer. When the waiter asked if everything was fine, the guy who ordered the Scotch eggs said they werent very good the waiters response was "well, now you know not to get them next time." Classy. The last time I went to the restaurant, and the last time I will ever go here, I had to go for another office get together on a Saturday morning before everybody had to work for the weekend. It was a treat from the boss and not attending would have been gauche. I got the corned beef hash. It was a putrid disappointment. The menus description did not match the meal. Just go to Cartwrights Ranch House. Everything there is above average.

My wife and I used to like coming to Denton just to eat here. That changed tonight. She, my daughter and I came to Denton so eat kind of a pre anniversary meal. We walked in and it was clear the AC was no working. The heat was just oppressive. My wife was looking forward to having the veggie burger, only to see that it was no longer on the menu and replaced with a black bean burger. . I had the fish and chips and my daughter had chicken strips. My wife couldnt decide what to get and ordered opted for the hickory barbecue burger. The waiter (really nice kid but really clueless) brought the appetizer and turned right around and brought out my daughters chicken and my fish and chips. He told us my wifes burger would be right out. Fifteen minutes later her burger arrived. She took a bite out of it and realized she got a bacon burger, not a barbecue burger. By that time the heat was so bad that she just ate half of if and took my daughter to go the candy store. The waiter brought the check and as he took it he told me that he forgot to add the drinks we had to the order and that would be added to the final bill, which it was. All in all it was pretty miserable. Too bad....This place used to be a reason to come to the square. I guess theres always Cartrights.

Let me start by saying that the service was good. Friendly, attentive wait staff are the only reason I didnt give one star. Sadly, that was the only redeeming aspect of the place for me. The food is a little on the expensive side for what it is. A couple of people in our group had the ribeye, which wasnt great. One only finished a small amount of it. Others had fish and chips. The batter was crispy which is always a good start, but had a burnt taste to it, probably overused oil or too hot; either way... the haddock inside it was very dry. Not sure why they dont use cod. The other dish we had was the English Breakfast. Everything was pretty good, except that the bacon was undercooked. Sausages were authentic, and everything else was fine. Hard to muck up a fry up, to be fair. If this is deemed a good representation of English food judging by the reviews, no wonder people think so lowly of English fayre in this country. Theres so much more to it than this. Wheres the homely cooking: savoury pot pies, tarts, crumbles, roasts with fresh vegetables in abundance - the staple of any great pub in England? In their place: fried pickles and burgers. I wish them well, but as an Englishman I left very disappointed.
