Let me start with I use to like this place - I thought it was a pretty solid Thai restaurant located in downtown Austin. But after today, I will no longer be dining at Mai Thais. We had a group of 9 people - so I called to make reservations. A woman picked up and took our reservations, along with my name and phone number. One of the big reasons why we went was that they took reservations during lunch hour --- well unfortunately it didnt work out for us. We arrive 10 minutes early to be told by the host "oh sorry, I didnt check to see if we had any reservations and didnt see yours - give me 10 minutes" We didnt think it was a big deal except that the restaurant was understandably packed. 10 minutes turned into 15, then 45 minutes later we were sat. I requested that our food order was put in as rush since they missed our reservation; again, the host said no problem. The waitress was horrible - when I explained to her what happened she unapologetically looked at me and said "Well, we dont take reservations, so not sure why youre saying you have reservations. Its lunch hour and theres a convention across the street." Except that someone took my reservation yesterday - had they explained they couldnt take any when I called, we would be more understanding and probably wouldve gone elsewhere. So after 5 minutes of arguing with me, the host finally came up and said that we did have a reservation, and that he already told the kitchen to cook our orders first. The waitress at this point yelled at him asking if this was his fault and then finally took our orders. Then she proceeded to slam down our drinks and our meals and was just terrible the rest of our meal. Oh and they decided to include tip in our check, otherwise she wouldve barely gotten any from me because of her terrible attitude and lack of service. Overall, 1 star for horrible customer of service - theres better places to go downtown Austin where you wont be yelled at for making reservations...

The two-star rating is because of the service. The food was really good. A colleague and I stopped in for lunch today. The restaurant was busy, but not crowded, which is typical for Austin lunch. My friend and I ordered a basic beverage and an entree each: water and Pad Thai, iced tea and Pad Ka Prow. After we ordered, we were asked if we wanted the free salad. It was a bit awkward, but we agreed... I mean sure, its free. About halfway through our salads, the entrees arrived. It was rushed, but its lunch and people are usually in a hurry. Our entrees were great: appropriately spicy and flavorful. Our server kept our glasses full and all was well. After we finished our entree and paid, my colleague and I were talking as we finished our beverages when the waiter came up and said, "We have an 8-top coming in. Can you guys leave?" After a moment of astonishment, I counted the open tables. There were plenty that would accommodate a party of 8. I figured there were at least two other seating arrangements. So, I was very confused and quite insulted by this remark. The server must have been antsy to get the automatic gratuity from the table of 8 or something. Unfortunately for him, it also killed the experience. If I could take back the 25% tip I left, I would. Asking someone to leave when there is plenty of seating is highly inappropriate. This makes me second guess my choice of restaurants--especially when there are plenty in the area around Third and San Jacinto. This server should be retrained in customer service and tactfully asking someone to give-up a table. When youre super-busy I can understand this request; however, when its moderately busy I find it off-putting. Poor form, Server. Youre not a good ambassador for your restaurant. It appears youre only courteous until someone pays, then its "get the f*** out."

Seriously. Get with the times, Mai Thai! If youre going to be using the delivery service Door Dash, you absolutely NEED to start taking the aspect of delivery seriously. Its 2016. Tons of people who dont want to leave their home for food or deal with poor service (which seems to be running prevalent in Austin, must be the water. ). There is so much business to be made in the aspect of delivery. I really cant wrap my head around why you wouldnt want to take advantage of that. The ordered was placed at exactly 6 p.m. and was delivered almost at 8 p.m. The estimated time of arrival was 7:05pm. See the issue? Almost 2 hours from cook to delivery. Youre only a few minutes driving distance from where I live too... As for what I ate: I ordered Krao Pao Seafood (spelling?) and it was meh. The licorice flavor was overbearing and if it wasnt there...the food would have been just bland. The noodles were on the brink of being soggy. It just wasnt enjoyable. :/ That Pineapple Duck Curry was off the charts though. We absolutely loved it! I dont believe Ill be ordering from your business again though. First impressions matter and the slowness of your business really brought your rating down a few notches. Start preparing food for delivery quicker before your competitors beat you to it. Goodluck!

At the same address as Maxs Wine Dive and Piranah Killer Sushi, both of which have good reviews, Mai Thai has tough competition. But thats only if your lone criterion is good food. If you are looking for Thai food, though, you would find Mai Thai more than acceptable. The food is made with quality ingredients. My pad kee mao was not oily and had plenty of lean beef. The tom yum and satay had skinless white meat. The food was a bit sweet for our taste, though. The negatives: location - parking is at a premium; price - high, probably to compensate for the high rent area; service - although pleasant, was slow and forgetful. The waiter got one of our order wrong. We asked for chopsticks that we never got. At one point, I had to go and get my own water. I should note that the staff was slammed due to the conference at the nearby convention center.

If you like friendly servers...dont go here!!! We are vegetarian and just got served pork egg rolls after requesting vegetarian. When we asked what the meat substance was on our plates, our server went to the kitchen and was arguing with the cooks about putting pork in the egg rolls. They...the kitchen staff, had no problem with feeding vegetarians pork. After arguing with the cooks...she didnt even come back to the table to let us know what we were served. We heard them arguing about pork, so we got up and left. The cooks obviously do not care about customer care and service!!! If I had a peanut allergy and was served peanuts...it would be the same problem. Not worth the time and energy!!!

I have never been to the restaurant, as I generally order pickup, so I cant say much about the decor except that it looks like a great place to take a date. Has a romantic darkened kinda feel. I ALWAYS order the basil friend rice and have them make it "Thai hot" and they never disappoint. I would stay away from the chicken, as it is probably actually cat. Their beef is awesome, which is generally what I grab. Prices are fair for the area, considering it is downtown. For lunch the basil fried rice is about 8 dollars and well worth it. Some of the better Thai food in Austin, IMO (as long as you do not count the chicken).
